SpinnerofTales -> Have Fun Teabagging Washington (9/11/2009 8:41:49 PM)

Tomorrow, September 12th, a very major demonstration is planned for Washington DC. The Tea Party Movement is going to have a major protest march on our nation's capital. Among the festivities There will be visits to government officials, workshops, sign making and finally a rally with attendance estimated from "tens of thousands" to a hundred thousand. At the rally, a large number of conservative/libertarian speakers will address the crowd. I have no doubt that many less than complimentary things will be said about President Obama and his administration.

I couldn't be more pleased.

This is a fine example of freedom of speech in action. While I may not agree with the platforms or politics of the protesters, their ability to protest shows the country is far less sick than many claim. No one is going to try to stop them, silence them or harm them because they are saying things against the current administration. If they do not become violent, no violence will be done to them. If they do not become a danger to the health and well being of others, they will not be interfered with. They will be free to express their dissatisfaction and desires with no need to worry about being polite or deferential or even balanced. This is their day and they can do pretty much as they like. That is just as it should be.

This can be a strong learning experience for all involved. The country can learn a bit of what the Tea Party people feel is the correct course for our country. The conservatives can learn that demonstrations are the place for chanting, yelling and having their opinions voiced without having to listen to contradicting opinions. They can learn that demonstrations are the time to yell "Liar" at the president, not the floor of the senate during an address of a joint session of congress. They may learn that a demonstration of this type is the proper forum for shouting and yelling out slogans and making their voices the only one's heard for that day, not town hall meetings. Most of all, they may learn that they are afforded their rights to take over a city and make a lot of noise as those on the left are given.

I am not sure that this protest will change anything. One change I am hoping for is that it changes the conservative mantra to "look how many of us there are" from "We have to do (insert action they used to complain about when those on the left did) because those mean democrats won't let us talk".

So on behalf of all of us "leftys" let me be the first to extend my warmest hopes that you have a safe and productive demonstration. Go teabag 'em till they can't see straight.

Actually, there is at least one strong ally I can think of for the demonstrators. I have heard that Larry Craig strongly supports teabagging.

I am a coffee man myself.

KatyLied -> RE: Have Fun Teabagging Washington (9/12/2009 2:14:17 PM)

Could they not have come up with a better name than teabagging?  Seriously, the visual that it gives many people is nothing short of funny.

mnottertail -> RE: Have Fun Teabagging Washington (9/12/2009 2:16:58 PM)

these are insider terms, and they don't have such connotations outside our community which is rather small, even when compared to the number of rightie tighties.

Not a term with our meaning in general recognizance out there.

Actually the term has moved out of the kinky sex world. It is quite commonly used to describe the action of squatting repeatedly over another player's 'corpse' in various shooter video games.

Starting this thread with that term is just Spinner's way of trying to elevate debate around here.

He likes to claim that's his pet cause. [;)]

Yea they do it in WOW alot. Usually alliance characters, go figure.

Actually, as far as anyone can trace back, it was actually a commentator on FOX NEWS that first used the "teabager" trem for thoe who were attending the rowdy fests in public parks. It's just that the Daily Show picked up the clip, and ran with it. (This is part and parcel of having your staff utterly unsophisticated, or dare I say it, poorly educated, in sexuality... you're bound to end up pulling faux pas like this.)

Personally, I'm hoping that the GOP runs Rick Santorum for their next candidate... Then the US will get an education of what the term "Santorum" means in the urban dictionary. (Thanks, Dan Savage!)

You know, Sanity, I started one thread with the modest idea that shouting "nazi' and "communist" might not be the best tool for advancing reasonable political debate and I've been ridden like a mechanical bull at a redneck bar for it ever since. Once again, if you can't tell the difference between the appropriate rough and tumble of a spirited political discussion and screaming "seig heil" at one another, then so be it.

As for this thread, I started it for two separate and equal reasons. The first is that I think that this demonstration is a fantastic thing. I am a great proponent of free speech as the liberty from which all other liberties arise. When I see a group taking advantage of their freedom of speech to present their agenda and make their voices heard, I say bravo to them, whether I agree with them or not.

Second, I wanted to point out that all this shouting about "Only the left wing can speak their minds.", "The big, bad leftys are trying to stifle our freedom of speech" and "We have to be disruptionist
, rage filled and strident because our other avenues of communication have been taken from us" is nonsense. It is a perfect demonstration (pardon the pun) that the right is afforded the same rights of free speech as the left.

So enjoy the day. Enjoy the freedom of speech you are afforded. And please, although it is your right to do so, please stop bitching at me every time I don't treat your particular side of an issue with the proper degree of reverence.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Have Fun Teabagging Washington (9/12/2009 4:32:00 PM)

Actually, Spinner, I think you give that crap far more respect than it deserves. (Which makes you a better man than I am, I guess. I can't help but want to point out what a wagon load of dung it all really is.As often, as I can, and in the strongest possible terms I can conjure.)

Like countless others at the rally, Joan Wright, 78, of Ocean Pines, Md., sounded angry. "I'm not taking this crap anymore," said Wright, who came by bus to Washington with 150 like-minded residents of Maryland's Eastern Shore....

"Cash for Clunkers! Trade in your congressman!"

My general feeling:
It is just a beginning.

DomKen -> RE: Have Fun Teabagging Washington (9/12/2009 4:46:26 PM)

My general feeling:
If that's all they could get together after months of planning then this isn't a movement of any consequence. Check out photos of real large protests in DC to see that this thing was tiny.

Sanity -> RE: Have Fun Teabagging Washington (9/12/2009 4:46:27 PM)

You'll have to forgive me if I interpreted your slam as a slam, Spinner.

The way you worded your thread title must have been a mistake on your part if you didn't intend to be so extremely offensive.

Its a good start, ken. We're just getting warmed up...  [:)]

Ja, your intuition has not served you well in terms of accuracy over the last years, and so some 78 year old lady (god you better hope they are younger than that, the first fucking election a republican who has actual aspirations will run in will be the 2016, the republican in 2012 will be sacrificial) alotta them already corroding base are going to cakk, thus exacerbating your problems.

This is why I say; it is just a beginning. The level of government corruption has became intolerable. Future perspectives do not look good.

Warmed up for what? This was it. The 9/12 guys and the teaparty groups made this the grand display of their political muscle and they got maybe 60k. A few years back Farrakhan got 750k in the same place and that wasn't enough to get the NoI taken seriously by anyone. The crowd doesn't even come close to the crowds that showed up for the anti abortion marches back in the 80's when I lived there.

One of the signs I remember seeing today read, "It's The Corruption, Stupid!"
