Social Isolation Worsens Cancer, Mouse Study Suggests

Well, yeah. Social isolation worsens everything. Social animals need a functioning social network to maintain their hormonal balance, which affects just about everything else in their bodies.

Rumsfeld knew this fact, and used it to his benefit by implementing 2 week isolation (of all senses by using earplugs, blinders and nose clips while the hands are bound behind the back) from day 1 at Guantanamo before any human contact including torture, a.k.a. Enhanced Interrogation. That didn't include the flight after the kidnapping from their home countries, which they were in fact isolated immediately for. Perhaps the medical community could use Rumsfeld's terms, applied for medical terminology, and we could call social isolation affecting cancer, something neutral like Enhanced Carcinoma Accelerants. Its just good to know that Obama has made good on his campaign promises to "close Guantanamo, and get us out of these foreign wars". Can't you just smell the change?

This isn't new. Women with breast cancer who are in a support group have better prognoses than those that don't enter any group.

This kind of is a dumb is it not obvious thing. Cancer, especially on the may or may not make it situations, requires so much energy from all sources mental and physical to give you the best chance to overcome. People socially isolated suffer the double whammy of not having people to help you out and help you conserve your energy and boost it with love and support. People if all alone do not get that and the negative energy that can go into dealing with that would only add to their fight.

Hello
I am 32 and i have had cancer last year. Isolation does have an influence on the probability of developing a cancer. And many oncologists prefer their patients to work when they are having their chemo treatment.

In the UK there is a fantastic charity called  Macmillan Cancer Care. They are there to offer advice and support not only to the patient but to the family of the patient and they always have someone available to talk to, not just about cancer but about anything. What I and many others have found is that people find it difficult to know how to approach or discuss things with a cancer sufferer. I have noticed many friends who will now send an odd text or email to keep in touch rather than phone or visit. One said they had no idea what to say so they stayed away.

This can easily lead to a feeling of isolation. Luckily I have a great partner and family who support me in my wish to be treated as normally as possible. Being able to do normal things like helping my partner out with his business has helped me no end.

Hello Susie.
Thank you for your tip.I do not have cancer any more.I finished my chemo in July.
I understand you have a cancer.Am i right?

What you say is true.People don t know how to react. Some people never called me.they said they didn t know what to say...I can understand this.people react differently and some cancer sufferers take it very hard.

What i was saying is that a healthy isolated subject has more chance to develop cancer than a subject who is very sociable.

Reciprocally, cancer can cause isolation.I was not alone.I am from France (I am in london today and tomorrow so it is funny you are anszwering today) and they had many psychologists in the hospital but to be honest they didn t really help. i only believed in scientists...

Let me know if you wish to continue this conversation privately.

FR

In light of my own cancer thread, I thought it might be appropriate to send something here.

Most people are social creatures. They crave and seek human attention. For people like that I would say that the original statement is 100% true. But then there is this society in which we live, with atrocuties and whatnot, and this is on top of all the wierdo shit anyone does consentually. It seems to never end.

Now I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around this. Mom got one hug before going in for a quad bypass. I got hit with black mold last year. I am going blind. But I do not want a bunch of people around watching me shit my pants and puke and bleed all over the place. I prefer to be alone, and remembered in my former, tough, asshole with a gun state. I don't want to have anyone see my weakness. I refused to go see my good friend Jim Watt on his death bed because I figured he did not want me there. He did not call me his daughter did. She's a fucking ninny and if she ever knew what a Man was it must have gotten knocked out of her head by one of those assholes she fucked.

When I got shot back in the 1980s, I didn't want a big crowd around me. Some brought me the necessities, weed, beer and smokes. I did not really want to have a party while I am in a hospital bed. Actually I was out in five days, which is something because I had been shot in the head.

When I am sick I am not so sure if I want company. I guess it boils down to whether or not you are dependent on others for you emotional well being. Where I differ is that my emotions are under strict control. If they weren't I would be dead by now.

I can understand that when the prognosis can go either way, that the support of family and friends can help, but really, on my death bed I would rather be alone.

My pragmatism about this subject can be repulsive to some, but as usual, damn me for what I am.

While we are at it we need to fund with millions a study about wheither or not adulescents sleep more than adults.

or if being happy makes the quality of life better

or if having health insurance in the States means your illnesses are caught before they develope into something worse

or if breathing dust makes asthma worse.

If someone wants to fund me a couple of million i promise to dedicate my life to discovering the answers to these questions and more..........................

Using FR

I fully believe that one's attitude can affect their physical well being. The body and mind are intertwined to a degree that most people do not see. Remember that both came out of the factory at the same time.

By that I mean alot. Do I say that your mind can affect you body or do I say that your body can affect you mind ? I say BOTH. That's right.

Read all the studies you want, but know this - the body can affect the mind and the mind can affect the body. Does anyone disagree ? OK so going on that premise the OP is right of course.

Now fully cognizant of this, to what conclusion are we drawn ? Fact one is apparent, that we, by hanging cool with the sick and ailing can be a very positive influence. If that is so, why can't we figure out how to prevent this shit from happening in the first place ?

T
