OSLO — The Norwegian Nobel Committee says U.S. President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Nope its not april 1st...Congrats Mr President

now that's just dumber than dumb

rulemylife -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 3:44:19 AM)

You know it!

That whole diplomacy and cooperation thing really is stupid.

housesub4you -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 3:53:59 AM)

Why waste your time talking to people, when you have other countries employing people to make bombs for you to drop on other countries who do not agree with you?

maybemaybenot -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 4:58:09 AM)

Interesting. He gets it for his " efforts ".
I wonder how the folks who actually made accomplishments feel about being squeaked out for good intentions, no results.

As I have said before : Obama farts and the world calls him Mozart.

You make it sound like he campaigned for the award. Two other sitting Presidents have won in the past. My problem with the award is simple... Obama is asking for, and working towards, peaceful means. I think this award is more of a slap in the face of Bush than Obama's own efforts. To me, thats disrespectful towards both men... more so Obama than Bush.

Its not like he can refuse.

Yes they mentioned that in this article...  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/eu_nobel_peace
"The award appeared to be a slap at Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for his largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage."

Not sure if that is it's purpose though.

This part kinda bothered me also. It sounds like the guy doesn't think Obama should have gotten it, but hopes it will encourage him to do better?

"So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act," said former Polish President Lech Walesa, a 1983 Nobel Peace laureate. "This is probably an encouragement for him to act. Let's see if he perseveres. Let's give him time to act," Walesa said"

or this one...

Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, who won the prize in 1984, said Obama's award shows great things are expected from him in coming years. "It's an award coming near the beginning of the first term of office of a relatively young president that anticipates an even greater contribution towards making our world a safer place for all," Tutu said. "It is an award that speaks to the promise of President Obama's message of hope."

maybemaybenot -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 5:41:49 AM)

I am not criticizing Obama, Tazzy. I am criticizing the Nobel Committee.
And I agree this was purely a political statement by the Committee, using their power for political purposes. Not at all what the intention of this award was for.

Yes, I give him kudos for trying to improve relations with other countries, and if he ever accomplished anything noteworty, ala Carter, I would applaud this.

My Fart-Mozart comment is a criticism of others, not Obama.

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 5:46:43 AM)

I dont think i can criticize them either. They were faced with Bush. For all his faults, i dont think Bush had a choice in his actions right after 9/11. Certainly no one else was offering solutions

After 8 years of Bush, Obama must seem like a breath of fresh air. Sadly, they havent allowed his administration time to breathe yet.

Promises and ideals are a great beginning. They should have waited to see what fruit his ideals could bare.

Are you one of those who still think that Iraq was involved in 9/11? How quaint! I can see, just maybe, going into Afghanistan but not what happened after that. Bush turned Afghanistan into a huge poppy field again. Love it!

Now that I agree with. Bush and Obama are like night and day, skin color aside of course.

Premature, oh yes, for sure, but will the american people give him a chance to make that award mean something...it will be interesting to see it unfold
and I mozart in your general direction for assuming I meant anything beyond my congratulations [:D]

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 6:01:56 AM)

~chuckles

Im far from quaint, nor did i mention any details other than Bush took action. It might help if you didnt put words into people's posts. Im not discussing what Bush did or didnt do, im discussing the actions of a committee.

Neville Chamberlain got screwed out of his prize.

Thadius -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 6:31:51 AM)

Morning,

Congrats Mr. President.

Did anybody else catch the fact that the cutoff for being nominated was just 2 weeks into President Obama's term? It's kind of cool that they are now awarding this thing for potential outcomes.

I do have an interesting question about the award. Are there any laws on the books now, that relate to an elected official receiving money from a foreign organization based on their actions and or possible future actions? Could such money be seen as a possible bribe for favors already rendered or for future favors? Just somefin to think about, no?

I wish you well,
Thadius

Louve00 -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 6:39:20 AM)

I don't know.  I don't really think its cool at all to be awarding an award based on "potential".  While I do like that Obama has put us in the light of being better players with the world, I don't think anyone should be awarded for intention or "what they think he will bring to the table."  I suppose that's how the world views it all though.  And since he can't refuse (and I doubt he would lol), as Thadius said...congrats, Mr President.

Read for content. I asked a question, it was not a statement being attributed to you. Your statement was so vague but it was posted. Take the moment presented to explain what you meant by " i dont think Bush had a choice in his actions right after 9/11".

Sanity -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 6:58:24 AM)

The Nobel Committee is doing the same thing to the peace prize that Barack Obama is doing to the dollar.
