FelinePersuasion -> Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/5/2006 5:47:17 PM)

Are there any drinks or foods that have been shown to help ease the pain of headaches. I take tylonal, asprin if I can find it, but generic pain killers like those tend to do squatt for my headaches

I use white willow bark for head aches, fever and joint pain. It is an aspirin like herb. The first aspirin was derived from it's cousin meadowsweet. If you are allergic to aspirin, have ulcers, or GI diseases, you should not take it. Also, do not take this if you are currently taking NSAIDS < /motrin/ibuprofen, alleve/naprosyn >
It works very well, better than ant pharmacuetical I have tried.

Would I need a dr's ok on using the willow bark pills?

maybemaybenot -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/5/2006 8:06:06 PM)

Nope, not at all. Only if you have any of the conditions mentioned above or tinnitis. < ringing in the ears >
It is as safe as aspirin. If you take aspirin, you can take this herb.

Most MD's are not too supportive of natural medicine. My experience as a nurse and patient is, they won't object, but will poo poo it. Pretty much I use herbs exclusively, except for my kidney medicine which I must take.

I've also had some luck with a B complex designed for migraines. I think it also contains willow bark and some other things.

Timely question,I just heard the other day that 'gatorade' can help get rid of a migraine ...not sure if it works ...but it might be worth a try.

LthrdWolf

Ps/Even though I Know that too much caffeine can produce headaches & coming right off it can give one a horrid one for a few days ...an aspirin taken with *caffeine (such as a hot tea or regular hot coffee) will enhance its pain relieving effect. This works for migraine as the major pain comes after the blood vessels constrict & then 'over dilate' ...so they need to be shrunk back to normal size ...& the caffeine helps to do this.

Disclaimer:I am not an accredited physician, the above is a lay persons shared experience.

*caffeine-Be Sure to Double check the pain aids ingredients as some products 'already' have the caffeine added.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/6/2006 8:17:38 PM)

While caffeine (or caffeine withdrawal) can aid in actually getting a headache- I chug a coke and some ibuprofen when I'm lacking in my exedrine becauseone of it's main components is caffeine, it can help.

Otherwise, water (or gatorade to help hydrate) can be a help to cleanse stuff out of the body, get overall more hydrated, and open up the blood vessels some more.

After having past disussions with you I'm willing to bet on a few things that are causing your headaches.

1. You're having caffiene with drawl.

2. You're having sugar withdrawl.

So try having some sweet tea. Then again you might be diabetic. So try green tea.

3. You may be having some blood pressure issues.

4. How much water do you drink compared to soda and such? What's your sodium intake?

On a daily basis I will drink a gallon of water, two cups of coffee, and eat 5 small meals a day. When I feel myself get hungry, I can easily start having a headache if I"m perfoming a vigours task.

Try changing your diet some first before seeing a Dr for a few blood test and prescription medications.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/6/2006 11:05:55 PM)

I don't drink any soda's except if I am out at a restarant, and that's not even like once a month. mmm I drink one or two glass of water a day. I don't know what soduim in take is, if you mean salt next to none we don't use salt. I don't at least. unless everything you eat has soduim. I don't eat much sugar either. I don't eat candy or cakes or chocolates or chips or nothing. Same with caffien no soda's no energey drinks.

I was out buying clothing when the headache hit.

MarinaBlack -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/11/2006 10:19:12 PM)

Prevention is key.
Judging by your message, I suspect you get headaches as a matter of course - I get a headache maybe 2-3 times a year.

Get checked for food sensitivities. A very common source of headaches is wheat allergy or rennet allergy (an ingredient in most cheeses).

Stay away from sodas and you should be drinking 2 litres (not a mere 2 cups) of water a day. That = 8 cups of water.
Dehydration is also one of the main causes of headaches. ONLY water hydrates, btw. Juice, pop, coffee or tea with dairy or sugar do not constitute water.

Now, pappermint in a couple of forms is very useful for headaches.
Peppermint oil rubbed into the temples and drinking peppermint tea (without anything added to it).

Hope this helps.
Headaches suck.

Migranes and me

find a copy of 'the headache book' -- its quite useful for the accupressure techniques. Find out what your triggers are so you can avoid them. Check with your doc about perscription imitrix.

hope that all helps,

amativedame -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/29/2006 2:26:45 PM)

Unless you are making something from scratch, most things have some amount of sodium in it.  Salt is a natural preservative and is widely used in a lot of food/drink products.  Canned items are well known for their high sodium content.  A lot of items on grocery store shelves can fulfill your recommended sodium allotment in one serving.

There is some bickering about various drinks and their hydration properties.  One or two studies have come out recently that say things like juice, soda, coffee and tea hydrate just as well as water. Of course that is highly debatable.  Either way... you really should try to drink more water.  It has been shown that increasing your water intake affects your health dramatically.  If you don't drink soda, and you only drink two glasses  of water a day, what are you drinking?

skinnykitten -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/29/2006 7:07:05 PM)

Feline,
It depends on what causes the headache...  I'm not a physician, but from the sounds of it, it was a combination of tiredness and dehydration...  you should try and drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day (more in summer).  Aspirin is pretty much useless if your water intake is low; as a blood thinner it relies on hydration to work effectively...  In addition, your brain along with the rest of your gizzards needs that amount to function effectively.  Without it, headaches, confusion, loss of ability to focus etc ensues.

Also, sometimes I get tension headaches from stress/lack of sleep/immobility and such, if you think that is you, sometimes the best thing is just to massage your neck and shoulders - or better yet, get someone to do it for you... Often it is the tightness of your neck/shoulder muscles putting pressure on the blood vessels and smaller muscles in your scalp; relieving the tightness often will get rid of the headache :)

MsSophie -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/31/2006 3:21:41 AM)

From long experience with head aches and diagnosed atypical migraines I can tell you straight off that the most likely reason for your head ache was dehydration. This gives a murdering head-ache which feels pretty much like a serious hang-over - when you brain feels too small for the skull and as if it was just bumping around in vacuum in there.

There is no way your body would not get dehydrated if you are out shopping if your normal intake of water is one to two glasses a day. Recommended intake of water is one to two Litres a day under normal circumstances and should be added to if you're doing something which causes you to sweat more than normal.

PenelopePitstop -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/31/2006 8:58:19 AM)

As well as the above replies, a nurse told me an old remedy that seems to work very well on any pain if you're caught without a pain reliever of some kind. basically, get yourself a bowl of hot water (hand-hot, not scalding) and a bowl of really cold water, and a cloth, and bathe the affected part alternating between hot, for 2 minutes and then cold. What this does is open up the circulation and gives the nerve emdings something to concentrate on thus detracting from the pain. i was sceptical at first but after 10 minutes or so it had worked like a miracle.

BrutalAntipathy -> RE: Foods or drinks that aid in headache relief (3/31/2006 9:11:21 AM)

Morphine, Talwin, Stadol, and maybe a handful of Vicodin for good measure. If you take enough of them, they constitute food, sort of.

Honestly now, caffeine is a vasodilator, and does tend to stop or ease a headache. As for the willow bark, it contains salisin, which is pretty much the same thing as aspirin. You should avoid it if you are allergic to aspirin, and it will also increase bruising time as well as making you more prone to bruising for about 12 hours after taking it.
