i always associated the pattern with young children that are learning to speak. they often have difficulty pronouncing certain letters. i emulate this when i'm in little girl mode.

FR, after edified read thru

Steven, I think bad German accents have been around a lot longer than 'Blazing Saddles' . .. . . . . Up until the dissolution of the Soviet Union the Germans (preferably circa WWII-ish) & the Commies were the 'bad guys' for crappy teevee, cinema, & etc, so, lots & lots of 'vee haff vays uff making you talk' & so on & so forth . . . . .

Personally, I picked up the (typically ironic, et al) use of 'weal' & 'twue' here & mostly use it with reference to the context I understand from reading here -- snarkily aimed at the preachings of the proselytizers of this or that sect of the One Weal & Twue Way to BDSM . . . . . .

Got to thinking... was "um" meant as what we used to have to use for kids? Or that pissy way to start a sentence?

Yeah, I hear you. I was mawwied to a Korean ("Mawwiage is what bwings us togethaaa today" - The Princess Bride rocks!). I never heard my name pronounced correctly by his family in all the years we were married. The L was a problem and then it was the I that was even worse. Oh well, I probably didn't say their names very well either lol.
