But Buddha was a person not?

Not really, no. Siddhartha Gautama attained buddha nature and set the initial precedent after which (depending on your type of buddhism) others have followed.

And Jesus wasn't meant to be the same?

I am not religious..so I have no clue. From the outside they look the same.

But thank you for answering.

According to the Christian theology Jesus was divine and the son of God.

Buddha became enlightened. Very different.

I see..kinda...

( Jesus was a jew though..lol...that puzzles me also...that later some peoplel started christianity :P   but that is an other discussion)

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Is Scientology a religion? (10/31/2009 8:09:49 AM)

Siddhartha Gautama also got laid shitloads for YEARS and had everything $$ could buy for years (almost defined "party animal") before he got whacked with the buddha nature stick.

kinda covenient: he only had to give everything up after he GOT to screw everything that moved and also had the coolest clothes ever.

it's like the pious Nun who only hit the abbey AFTER doing  DP's with the jocks in the backalley (pun intended) of the Community College.

Moonhead -> RE: Is Scientology a religion? (10/31/2009 8:13:04 AM)

I think that's supposed to demonstrate the transient nature of worldly pleasures, or something of the sort.

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Is Scientology a religion? (10/31/2009 8:27:06 AM)

oh, sure, but it's easy for someone who's had their fill of them, or never has a chance at getting any of them.

you don't see many upwardly mobile 2 cars/three kids/gets blowjobs but rarely anal from the wife/2 mortgage business guys (or the equivalent from any century) starting aesthete movements advocating "forgetting the self and becoming a 'One-ness'..."

Moonhead -> RE: Is Scientology a religion? (10/31/2009 8:37:25 AM)

True enough.

PolyVinyl -> RE: Is Scientology a religion? (10/31/2009 9:14:38 AM)

My pops is a Buddhist and a Jew (weird combo, right?)... he just tries to be one with nature and stuff.

As for scientology... well, I just finished talking to a very attractive Domme who practiced Scientology. I now think she wasn't really a Domme..and in talking to her, she seemed kind of off.

Once I found out about the scientology I started asking her some questions, and that anger/zealousness that they're supposedly notorious for popped up right fast.

Scientology is a crock.. a dangerous one at that. But yeah, it's a religion to those practicing it.

(shrug) just my take.

Moonhead -> RE: Is Scientology a religion? (10/31/2009 9:21:45 AM)

The bile $cientologists can muster when somebody questions their beliefs can be pretty disturbing. I do wonder if there's a connection between that and them being so down on psychiatry: you only have to look at how Tom Cruise unravelled when he came off his medication to wonder about that, don't you?

wendyrosa -> RE: Is Scientology a religion? (10/31/2009 1:42:46 PM)

Yeah, and Scientology is just one big fat global scam.

Buddhism has no deities in the way that most people understand deities.

It's more a philosophy than religion, yes.

However, americanized buddhism has taken its occidental fascination with monotheistic systems to where it somehow identifies "buddha" as a deity. *shrug*

I don't think that's just in America, I certainly saw people praying to Buddhas for things in Japan.

uh oh...sounds like scientology is trying to weed its way into the bdsm world...[:'(] and did she jump on a couch while you were talking by any chance? [:D]

In regards to their constant berating of psychology I always thought it had alot to do with them exploting those people who already have some underlying issues. Think about it: if someone got 'talked into' joining the scientology church and their friends/relatives/parents/etc... told them to see a psychiatrist if they are vulnerable to believe that bs, and then the scientologists say 'hey there, don't talk to those people! they're the ones that are nuts! believe us!' it sounds alot like a setup for psychological manipulation and brainwashing.

'What's the difference between a cult and a religion? Is there a set number of followers a belief system has to obtain in order to 'graduate' from one to the other? In my experience, cult has been used primarly as a scare tactic when one religion slanders another. '

I would say the difference between a cult and a religion is that a cult exploits and/or harms people in some manner. a religion does not. For example, christianity, judaism and islam aren't 'in it for the money' so-to-speak. Yes they take donations, followers do usually give what they can, when they can. But overall those religions allow everyone equal opportunity for 'enlightenment' and advancement in their respective faiths, and in general preach the well being of their followers. Scientology on the other hand, simply takes your money. If you don't pay, you don't 'advance' in scientology. In addition to that they have unqualified 'church' leaders telling people how proven beneficial institutions, such as psychiatry, are harmful. Whether they truly believe this is anyones guess. However it sounds an awful lot like a way to control people to me.

'I F*cking LOVE bacon!'

Well in that case take a look at these:

Just looking at that I can almost hear my arteries clogging [:D]

I think its not a question of if its a religion.  Its a question of if its doing good in the world.  I think Scientology is a good movement in the instance of questioning Our beliefs and DOGMA in psychology and reliance on drugs to deal with Mental and emotional health.  People label other people and then force them on drugs.  There is proof that Americans are being overmedicated, especially children, because its easier for parents to medicate their children than talk to them.  Children normally rebel against the parent.  Parent doesn't understand, well, something is wrong with the child then.  Medicate that child.  ;0  Often, that medication causes the exact problems its suppose to prevent. (suicide/mental disorders)   I think scientology beliefs are better than psychology beliefs currently held in America.

Buddhism doesn't require that one give up a normal life, one can supposedly gain enlightenment while living as a layman. It's just supposed to be easier to do without all the distractions.

"Buddhism doesn't require that one give up a normal life, one can supposedly gain enlightenment while living as a layman. It's just supposed to be easier to do without all the distractions. "

that not what I said.

Buddhism demands you give up all narcissistic bullshit that makes you wanna be a sex guru at Burning Man or Reggae on the River or Sundance Film Festival or Slamdance or (years ago) Woodstock.  You cannot follow The Path and have ANY photo of yourself used in ANY way that is purly for the singular self, like being a wankerous white boy with dreads trying to get laid while pretending to be "deep".

It requires that you give up a few other things as well, doesn't it? Meat, booze, stimulants (including coffee and chocolate), I think there's a couple of flavours that are even more down on sex than the stickiest arsed branch of Christian fundamentalism you can name as well.

I find this statement completely appalling, and I'm not surprised that people have suggested that you must be a Thetan after coming out with that. Do you really think Tom Cruise is in better shape since he came off his psychiatric medication? Is taking everybody with a non systemic depression that won't respond to therapy off Prozac going to make the world or their lives a better place? Might John Travolta's son still be around if his parents weren't members of a cult that's rabidly opposed to any medication for any reason?
Rhodes is right on the money about eschewing psychiatric treatment making vulnerable people easier to exploit. Mo Berg, the Reverend Moon and the Four P Movement all used to be into that as well.
