Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: How do I find out if there's ever been any complaints about a local mental pyche ward? (11/10/2009 1:41:49 PM)

angel, I've listened to the dr, I tell her I try to walk and exercise and I try this, or that or the other and she says you have to loose weight, and I say I am trying, but I hurt really bad all the time, it took me a year of saying that before she'd xray my spine. I know other people have had this problem with their dr too.  I know you can't base other people's experiences around your own, but I've been told tone of times weight loss is the key, and it's not the whole key and it's being presented as the whole key,

Angel I am going to see a nutrition specialist out of my own pocket since kiaser doesn't do nutirtion counsoling for over weight people, who're only over weight, you have to be seriously sick to get nutrition counsoling and a nutritionist case worker to work with you.

I called dr after dr and got appointment after appointment, I went in every single week and I told them look I am loosing motor functions I am falling down I am in extream pain every single day, I can't walk, I can't move, I can't sit with out EXCRUCIATING  PAIN, and they still basically patted my hand and said you'd be fine.

One dr even flat out called me a liar, when I told him I was to the point I needed a wheel chair to get around because I couldn't walk much any more.

Tfb, this is actually not true but true.  MOST OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESE people's physical PAINS and aches and such many times are aggravated FROM BEING OVERWEIGHT.  I see how you are responding to what people are saying here and wonder if you are actually LISTENING to the doctor or if you are placing your own focus on what he is saying and NOT hearing the rest.   ANY doctor worth their salt WILL tell any patient who is grossly overweight and/or obese and even just overweight to LOSE weight and they will see a lot of their physical issues if not go away, alleviated some degrees.  You say it too doctors TWO years to diagnose  you being "hurt" after falling off a horse?  Just out of curiosity did you take the proactive concept of getting more opinions or did you hear one doctor say lose weight and the hurting will help.  That is actually true, if you are overweight and placing pressure on an injury due to your weight, it will hinder your recovery and any future issues you may have.  My knees and ankles which both have arthritis and whole bunch of pain and agony to them since i was 14 and grew 6 inches in a summer, the extra weight i have on doesn't help that issues and in fact HARMS it more.

While i know everyone has horror stories about physicians and yes many times SOME things take YEARS to diagnose unfortunately for some that is the nature of the beast that is the human body and the every increasing concepts of diagnosis and drugs and treatments out there.   But i for one would not continue to see a GP whose only treatment options for me was a casual lose weight and nothing else.    Have you asked him for help in that area?

IT's true if you're obese the dr's won't try to rule out other things first. They'll go for obesity first and problems second and sometimes doing the second part can take years.

After I fell off the horse in 2004 it took me 2 years and some serious side affects for someone to look at me and say you're right you're hurt, NOT JUST LOOSE WEIGHT IT'LL BE OK.

If you mean weight, yup I am 318 and I need to loose weight and I've been trying so hard but not getting naywhere because medical professionals don't take fat people seriouslly.

you are babbling so much bullshit that you are tripping over it.[8|]

I also am obese.  Taking a medication caused me to gain 100 lbs in 10 weeks while carefully watching my diet & continuing to be as active as possible.  But that was over 15 years ago.  the reason I am still obese is because I make some bad choices in food, not many, but mainly because I am sedentary.  I'd much rather read a book than go for a walk, because walking hurts.  It hurts because I'm obese.  My Dr makes no bones about that & neither do I.  I don't have any underlying physical issues that would cause me to remain obese & I believe that those are quite rare in actuality.

So here's what you do if you can't get medical intervention to lose weight:  Eat less & exercise more.  That's it.  That's what will work.   Do this on a consistent basis & I'm betting you will lose weight.  I'm doing that & I'm losing weight.  Slowly.  But the number on the scale is gradually becoming smaller.  Keep a journal of what you eat & how much you exercise, what kind, etc.  Be honest in that journal & I think that you will be surprised at how much you're eating & how little you're exercising, even though in your mind, you think you're doing everything that can be done to lose weight.  We all try to make ourselves better in our own mind & tell others that we are better than we are so that we can receive positive validation.  Do this for a month, religiously, then come back & tell us what happened.

A little advice :
Tackle one problem at a time. You have two very serious issues, your mental health and your physical health, including being morbidly obese. < sorry, but you really are and it is taking years off your life. And I am no skinny minny >
To try and loose weight, excercise, go to your mental health appointments,  work on your relationship issues, your  back problems and being unstable on meds is setting yourself up to fail at all of them.

I would suggest you work on your mental health first and foremost. You need to be stronger mentally. AS you progress in therapy, you will know when you can get going on a real diet. In the meantime, cut down on your food a little and walk, move, expend energy. Yes, it will hurt, you are severely out of shape with spine problems and your muscles and bones are not used to being used, they are used to being at rest. The more you move regularly the less it will hurt. Take a Ibuprofen or Alleve three times a day, take your walk about an hour after you take the med. Try and in crease your walks to two times a day after a few weeks.
You have alot of complicated mental and physical health issues, and I suspect they are all intertwined, so don't take on so much that sucess seems insurmountable and just saying " fuck it " to everything. Do your therapy, feel stronger and trust me, if you stay with it you will become proud of yourself. Some one said therapy is painful...... yes it is.... it hurts, you have to look and think about things you don't want to and one day you get to the point that you can actually take resonsibility for the things that in your heart at the time, you saw as someone elses fault, but you were a willing participant the whole time.

Linna I only eat about once a day if not that cause sometimes honestly I am to lazy to get up and fix something nutricious so I'll sit there and ignore how majorly hungry I am, but it's mostly junk and some days I gorge on junk  cause I am just so hungry,  And some days I do amit I over eat because I am hungry from my own doing, so I'll tweak that advice if it's ok.

This is what I need to do, Eat properly. Do not go all day and not eat then gorge on junk,  because I am desperate and hungry, and then sit on  my butt cause I hurt to move. because that will only make it hurt worse. Work on getting mobile  and then I will be able to do more, because I spend more time being active and less time on my duff.

Swimming is most definitely exercise.  Unfortunately, I'm unemployed & homeless right now, so walking really is the best option for me to be mobile.  My point was really that just because it hurts, doesn't mean that I shouldn't be doing it.  The more I move, the less it hurts each time.  When I got to my sister's, she made me walk & she likes to walk fast so I had to push myself.  The first few days, I was in agony & wanted some narcotics for the pain.  I no longer feel that way, a mere 2 weeks later.  And she can walk almost at her normal pace now & I can keep up.  It's amazing how quickly the body gets back into shape.

I am already quite proud, because I have walked more in the last few weeks despite not feeling good than I have in days. and I didn't let not feeling good keep me from doing it, I  just walked slower, and I sat down more frequently, and If I was really sick and tired and dizy and not just lazy we went home.

Holy crap Linnaea!  What kind of medication were you taking?   A pound of melted butter every night before bedtime?

I just  went to an informational meeting for Food Addicts Anonymous (a 12 step program that is sort of an offshoot of OA).  It blew me away.

It was an MOAI by the brand name of Nardil.  My Dr said it "might cause a little weight gain."  I stopped taking it when I hit the 100 lb mark.
