ORIGINAL: Twoshoes You know, you could always find a progressive school if you're really worried about "indoctrination". You can also argue that you need a certain amount of indoctrination to create a resistance to it. Personality has a lot to do with how likely you are to challenge doctrines. I've spent two and half years in a Catholic highschool when my parents last moved. It didn't make me any less likely to question everything (including in a phenomenological sense). Anyway, school is a social experience, where you learn how to charm people, get your way and sweet talk girls. Don't be a protective control freak... Your kids don't need to be exactly as you envision for them to live well. I was one of those kids that would have been much better off being home schooled than being in a public school. My mother tried me out in a progressive school, but it was in a city and I just was not a city girl: they were talking about sexual violence, gangs and the drug culture and I still believed (sort of) in the Easter Bunny. However, public school yielded nothing but misery for me. I was that kid who was picked on K-12. I was so bright that homework was something that took me at least 4 times longer to write than it did for me to do in my head. Despite my brightness I graduated near the bottom of my class; I just didn't care and missed over 40 days my senior year. Even missing that much, I got a B+ on my physics final, without too much effort on my part. The physic's teacher told me he was "impressed"...and at that point realised what I would have been like as a student had I not missed those days. How dare you second guess mothers and what they know to be what is best for the children they are raising. And school is never (or shouldn't be) a place where kids learn how to get their own way. If it is, someone is amiss in the boundaries department. But it is very revealing that you seem to think that is the case.
