ORIGINAL: yourdarkdesire kitkat - your unit is overstaffed????? sweeeeeet. here it is always a battle. full-time staff are pulling overtime. casual and part-time are working full-time. I got out of that rat race four years ago - and just spending a few hours in the hospital with my son last week, made me so happy I wasn't still there I'm guessing that kitkat's statement about being overstaffed is what the management is telling them to put them in fear for their jobs. It's interesting that management has been harping on bad morale when they are the cause of it. I once had a manager like that. I was in her office for a 'conference' and she said "Well, what do you have to say?". I just looked at her and said "I understand you've been a manager of some sort for 25 years" she nodded. I just continued with "Well, it's a shame that you never learned the difference between fear and respect because I'm not afraid of you" I smiled and nodded and let myself out of her office. (no I wasn't fired because they needed me too badly). I'm afraid kitkat has managers like that. They never learned the difference between fear and respect. I wish we were overstaffed. My hospital is a "small trauma centre". We only have 1 combined general surgical/orthopaedic ward consisting of 41-45 patients. Day and evening shift ratios are 1:4-6, night shift ratio 1:7-10. Our acuity levels flactuate dramatically due to the fact we don't have a HDU or step down unit from ICU so it's not unusual for us to have 4-6 ICU level patients on our ward. We know as a team we work as hard as we can but have spent the last 12 months in particular very stressed due to management singling out my ward for doing anything wrong. We never get positive feedback, only negative. Add those "little meetings" with the high workload = unhappy, frequently sick, stressed nurses. I admit I just got to have a nice little skype session! I admit Ruby slept next to my feet all night. I admit my Mum is cooking me bacon & eggs for breakfast. How spoilt am I?
