I admit I appreciate the hugs. I admit that last night with my friend was extraordinary. After being almost comatose all day, I noticed he was becoming more lucid and saw a short window of opportunity. I paged the guys, and within minutes, there were 30 of us crammed into his room. After days of being out of it, he spoke clearly. He told us he loved us, appreciated all of the help and support, he said he was ready to go, wasn't in pain, wasn't suffering anymore and that he would be fine, not to worry. He told us he was very close to the end, could feel inside that death was coming soon, and asked for last rites. I ran down the hall, paged the clergy, and we proceeded to tell him how much we loved him, that we would take good care of his wife, and it was okay for him to go. It was an incredible moment. He has slipped back into his former state, but I have tremendous closure. He said everything that we needed to hear, and we've said everything to him we wanted to say. I'm hoping he goes quietly in his sleep tonight.
