ORIGINAL: GreedyTop I admit: question for the Army/former Army types. I just saw a pic, on the CM side, of a guy wearing an Airborne uniform - and sporting a goatee and mustache. It wasn't full color (but not quite sepia). It is my understanding that -while in uniform - military personnel are expected to be clean shaven. So, is this dude visually mis-representing himself? Not former army but I was good friends with some former spec ops folks when I coached and had free sparring/workout space available and some nasty, capable people to spar with. As far back as the 80's, some spec ops folks had what was called "Modified grooming standards". These were the guys who worked among indigenous populations and didn't want anyone to know they were US Military or even in a lot of cases American. (they were basically spies in other words). In order to blend in, they would adopt the same grooming standards as the people they were associating with in the field. I mean, what chance would some clean cut, freshly bathed blue eyed soldier boy looking dude have of being trusted with sensitive information by "Jihad Joe". For that job, you want someone who grooms himself like an outlaw biker but doesn't bathe as often. This guy (in his other pics) was BRIGHTLY blue eyed (I mean, omg, look at those EYES kind of brightly blue eyed), and his goatee/mustache were neatly trimmed and groomed. Hell, even in the uniform pic, all the facial hair was neat and tight... Moustaches were allowable but they had to meet certain standards; not to extend past the corner of the mouth or below the upper lip. To my knowledge Hill speaks truth. Only guys that were supposed to blend in as indiginous could get away with anything but military grooming. Even if they were SOG, doesn't make them spooks, per se but, one didn't have to be out of the service to be doing spook-type work. On-duty full-time soldiers could have mission-specific orders that would exempt them from normal grooming standards. There are some other explanations, also that aren't quite so cloak-and-dagger. If you have doubts, ask to see a DD214 with his name obscured. Peace and comfort, Michael
