Well, I, for one, do feel my spit-shake manhood cheapened by having to be forced to have watched that video.

So what's the argument here? That it compromises our vicarious american machismo for the president to greet someone in a manner corresponding to their culture if we can draw subservient or effeminate inferences from the act?

Yep, but only if there's a President from the other party in power doing it.
Pathetic, isn't it?

I had to find the information.. yet again.

Shall i also repost the pics of Bush bowing as well?

AMERICAN PRESIDENTS SHOULD NOT BE BOWING TO ROYALITY!

Plain and simple.

Were you as outraged by this when both Presidents Bush bowed to the emperor?

Where are the links to the threads in which you complained about that?

Forced video watching, there's one I've never heard of....kiiiiiiinky! *whistles*

Hierodule -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 12:27:26 PM)

I think that our president should participate in the traditional forms of greeting in any country he visits. If leaders come to the white house Obama can hug them or fist bump them or give them a handshake or a high five. Whatever he is comfortable doing. If he goes to their house, he should follow whatever their rules and traditions dictate is an appropriate form of greeting from a man of his stature.

Have we gotten so arrogant that we think our leader has the right to be rude just because he is American?

dcnovice -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 12:29:27 PM)

My concerns are twofold:

(a) Having bowed now to both the king of Saudi Arabia and the emperor of Japan but not, so far as I know, to any elected leaders, he seems to be saying that royalty deserves more respect than the rest of us. As an American, I find that idea distasteful, and I don't like to see it (literally!) embodied in the actions of the President while he is acting on my behalf.

(b) Imho, two heads of state should meet as equals. For Obama to bow deeply from the waist while the emperor sort of nods in reply is the wrong symbolic language.

Val has actually done that to me. Though it involved an entirely different sort of video. It was Japanese though, come to think of it...

Oh, you mean your pictures of Bush looking downward while sneezing or what have you...

I think you're confused again. Are you sure he wasn't throwing up all over him?

Now that's my kinda president, by god! A real man's president. Bowing's for pussies. Give me a president who'll go over there and puke all over the inscrutable little fuckers just to remind 'em who won World War II. That's the kind of man I want presidenting my country, dagnab it!

Doesn't seem odd to me. Even if you have the Prime Minister of England at a dinner at the White House it's not a meal for the Heads of State unless the Queen is there. Politics isn't always logical. Are the elected heads of state he's been introduced to governing countries whose culture would make a bow appropretiate?

Probably he just screwed up the bow and went too deeply because he's an American not used to bowing. I used to see that all the time in martial arts from the new students.

Obama didn't say he was going to bow to world leaders during the election campaign, I feel so betrayed now.

This isn't what I didn't vote for!

Great... now I'm comtemplating what sort of diplomatic gestures would have to be taken to make up for one head of state puking on the other.

Lucylastic -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 12:39:45 PM)

IF he were to fist bump anyone can  you imagine the screeching from the right????
"Damn (insert your favourite racial slur here) cant greet people normally ??? WTF?
Luckily I think he has more than an idea about protocols and diplomacy that is sadly missing in general.

I don't think they had to bother. In fact, I'm pretty sure that somebody apologised to Bush because he obviously didn't enjoy his sushi...

I'd like to volunteer for that job.  Just so long as I don't have to agree with a fair amount of her politics.  [:D]

To be honest, I don't know. China perhaps? I hadn't thought bowing was a big part of Saudi culture, but maybe it is. Does anyone know if he traded bows with the Japanese PM?

That could be. Which is one reason why it's tricky to appropriate pieces of another culture.

It is not all about the level of respect..also tradition and protocol.

"as American" ~ perhaps it is because you don't have those protocols and history in the USA.
Doesn't mean they are wrong.

He may have but if he didn't that still doesn't mean it's rude, the same as it isn't rude to not consider a meal of Heads of State cause you've got the PM of England and not the Queen. You'd have to find the equivalent of the Emperor in another country where the head is elected and the culture calls for bowing.

quote:

It's not appropriating. It's showing repsect for the culture. If Obama decided to start using a martial arts bow for everyone cause he thinks it's cool, that would be appropriating. In this case, he was in their country and attempted to show respect for their culture by greeting the Emperor as is approperiate. I am far more pleased that he made the attempt to be respectful of a country's culture than I am annoyed that he bowed a little too deeply. Would you prefer that he insist on drinking his tea out of a mug while there rather than a Japanese tea cup cause it's not in the American culture?

Hardcore hentai. Not my thing. I wouldn't say we have a kink for it. He just felt like making me suffer.
