So the new Twilight movie is out and the lines of frenzied fans snake around movie theaters.  So who here has -

Vampire can be a bitter and cold thing to swallow ... while Werewolf is warm, throbbing and still very much alive and surging as it is sliding down the throat and settles in the pit of ones stomach.

It's an interesting phenomenon, and like Harry Potter, it seems to have captivated quite a few adults. The theater was packed, yesterday, and they had 3 or 4 screens dedicated to the thing.

As lover of the vampyre, I would never have guessed that a movie about vampire romance that had so many instant, avid fans, would be such a disappointment, to me.

The male lead's appeal eludes me.  To take an actor seriously, when he delivers lines such as, 'oh, why is this body so irresistibly pleasing to mortals?' (I paraphrase), that actor needs to be ephemeral, charismatic, have weight to his presence.  The actor in this case isn't awful, but he's far from all that.

But his appeal, not nearly so lacking as that of the female lead actress.  Twitching does not constitute acting, and I cannot readily think of a worse, more self-consciously contrived performance in an actor allowed to take the lead in a major motion picture.

Apart from the acting, I didn't really feel a story arch, there.  The potential power of such a storyline seemed squandered, somehow.  I haven't read the books.  Are the books any better?

Much, much better, and highly addictive. I hated Twilight the movie even though I saw it long after reading the books.

The message it delivers is terrible.
The relationship between the two main characters is based solely on physical, outer beauty. Anyone who is not "beautiful" is scoffed at, shoved aside and ignored, and gets to watch on the sidelines, wishing they were beautiful. The main female, Bella Swan (ugh) is completely useless, spineless, and pathetic, in every sense of the word. She can't do anything unless her boyfriend is there, and actually nearly kills herself when he leaves briefly. The male lead, a vampire named Edward Cullen, stalks her and watches her sleep for about three months, a fact which has girls swooning over how "romantic" he is, then he tells her he's dangerous to her while refusing to leave her or let her leave, and basically sets off every red flag that exists, and maybe a dozen new ones (given that it's fiction, and he's a vampire).
And hundreds, probably thousands, of young girls are devouring this and wishing they were her. I came across a forum thread full of girls talking about how they were actually dieting and trying to change their appearance to look more like Bella. How they wanted to be in that kind of relationship which, if you read the book (and I could quote samples if asked to) is blatantly unhealthy and abusive.
These thousands of girls are getting the message that only pretty girls who devote themselves to their equally pretty boyfriends can be happy.
I confess to being slightly torn. On one hand, girls age 20 and older are reading these books, may never read any others due to the general busy life of an adult, and are buying into it. And I'm concerned that, in addition to a culture which encourages people to care more about physical beauty than inner beauty, we have such popular books encouraging the whole mess, further damaging the self esteem of younger girls who are not, for whatever reason, perceived as "beautiful". Not only that, but it's reinforcing the idea that women exist only to be girlfriends/wives, that they have no merit without a man.
And yet, an internet friend of mine who is in high school tells me that as a reward for good grades, the school agreed to bring the students to the movie, something which prompted the highest grades in quite some time. I used to read plenty of drivel when I was a kid too. I grew out of that as I got older and read more books, and my standards increased. Twilight may have this effect on others. So, there is definite benefits to a book becoming so wildly popular.
The kids in highschool (which is a kind of closed bubble of its own) are being told by their peers that they aren't good enough, and now a wildly popular book like this is reinforcing that message. On top of that, the adults are going on about "be yourself" and all that, but even they are throwing their full support behind this book that encourages the exact opposite. Talk about conflicting messages.
So the question I'm posing is, even if a book (any book, Twilight or future terrible books) could encourage hundreds or thousands of young people to read more, is it really such a good thing if it sends out such a sickening message?
Personally, I would never encourage anyone to read the books, and there are many like me who are denouncing them as crap. But, well, we're turning out to be a pretty tiny voice against the screaming fans.
For a breakdown of how the first book works out, and maybe a couple laughs, check out this post, "I want to beat Edward Cullen with a stick"

Hmm, maybe. But to be honest, her writing just isn't that good! I've been trying to come up with the right phrase, but my writing sucks too [:D]

True, but I still couldn't put the damn things down. I lost many, many hours to those books, just as I'm losing many, many hours reading the books that True Blood is based on.

ETA actually the Twilight books are gears towards female teens.

The target audience explains a lot of why most responses here are not enthusiastic.

petmonkey -> RE: Twilight craze poll (11/23/2009 12:06:04 AM)

Werewolf can be too gamey and is easily overcooked, and vampire usually leaves me feeling a bit bloated.  This Thanksgiving, i am having Tofurkey instead.

Llyren -> RE: Twilight craze poll (11/23/2009 1:00:55 AM)

I've read all the books, and seen the first film.  The books are aimed at teenagers, and written by a Mormon housewife.  The first movie was pretty good.  The director managed to take the third-rate material and do something fairly good with it.  She refused to churn out a quickie in the time frame the studio wanted, so they hired someone who would.  The result is the new film.

I think the actor who plays Edward is very pretty, and I think a lot of girls would love a man who was utterly focused and devoted to them, as Edward is to Bella.  But they're just Mary Sue fluff, and I'm sorry so many people take them seriously.

I've also read all the Sookie Stackhouse books, and they're fluff as well, but they get better with each book.

Lizbetbathory -> RE: Twilight craze poll (11/23/2009 1:16:44 AM)

bella is way too id say submissive but that isnt it.. not to sound tooi dunno 'Mum" ish but it doesnt give teen girls a good veiw on what could be in a relationship yes i knwo it is a vampire etc but i also read the books and wel that is just my opinion

Llyren -> RE: Twilight craze poll (11/23/2009 3:04:21 AM)

I'd say too Mary Sue-ish.  I wonder how many of her traits match up with the author's.  And the perfect, wish-fulfillment guy who lives forever and is unalterably devoted to you?  It is fantasy, but I'd feel better if it were marketed as fantasy, or at least teen romance.

Lot of trees died for those books [:)] , but I suppose if it gets young people to read, it's not a bad thing.

Funny link; who is the original "Mary Sue"? Thought it was one of the Waltons initially, but I'm just showing my age.

This is taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue

quote:

The term "Mary Sue" is taken from a character created by Paula Smith in 1973 for her parody story "A Trekkie's Tale,"[5] published in her fanzine Menagerie #2.[6] The character in question was Lieutenant Mary Sue ("the youngest Lieutenant in the fleet — only fifteen and a half years old"). Smith's story poked fun at unrealistic and adolescent wish-fantasy characters in Star Trek fan fiction.
