I found that what I ate and drank had a pretty serious influence. If I avoided junk and soda, drank a lot of water, walked a lot and got good sleep, I got through it much easier. And hot bathes.

I just remembered, those large exercise balls seemed to help tremendously also.

I used to lay flat on my stomach on a heating pad, then go to sleep.  When I woke up, they'd be gone.

A hot cup of tea and a couple of Motrin/Advil/Ibuprofin (all the same thing) can work wonders, as can this acupressure treatment that you can do yourself:

Find your ankle bone on the inside of your leg, the round one that sticks out right above your foot.  Lay four fingers directly above it, the first finger should be right beside it, not on top of it.  Where the fifth finger would go, take your thumb and press hard on that spot for one minute.  Repeat it on the other leg.  Then back and forth alternating legs a time or two.  This actually works most of the time.  If the cramps come back, do it again.

Grape juice or a glass of red wine helps me. The tannins alleviate cramps.

Chocolate, as dark as you can get/stand it.  Avoid caffeine and dairy, especially if your tummy tends to get upset.  Heating pads are your friend.  If you're having really horrible PMS cramps, you may want to get checked out for ovarian cysts - those are totally treatable once you know they're there.

If you're the sort of person who doesn't mind meds, take Aleve - double the normal dosage, at the same time frame as usual.  Kills cramps, makes your period lighter.  My Gyno used to prescribe this regularly back when Aleve was 'scrip-only, and she still recommends it.

I am all for home remedies. I  try to stay away from  over the counter medicine. I found that decaffeinated  warm tea work the best for me.  Chamomile tea is really good with a teaspoon of honey,  with a side of those special homemade chocolate hemp brownies,  life is good. [:D]
best of luck to you.

Walking is great for this - and a hysterectomy worked wonders for my cramps! better living through surgery [:D]

I don't know if this is true but I am told that having an orgasm also relieves menstrual cramping. I did look up a website regarding this matter:

http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/16/139.cfm

Hope this might help you. I used to have them but I am taking Prometrium since I am perimenopausal, which helps me tremendously.

This does work for some (I'm one of the lucky ones [:D] ), but for others it can make the cramping worse. Word of warning, it can also "speed things up" a bit, making the bleeding heavier for a little while after.

GreedyTop -> RE: Period (11/23/2009 11:18:21 PM)

for me, it's laying on my back, knees up and spread, with a heating pad.

(and since I know some of the regular guys around here may happen on to this... get your minds outta the gutter!!)

Naprosin (which is Aleve, I think..but I double the dose)

ShellyD -> RE: Period (11/24/2009 1:02:19 AM)

Acupuncture worked for my severe dysmenorrhea, one intial treatment then one every 6 weeks for 3 times. It changed a decade of period problems. After that, I would use aspirin 300mg (reduces clots, and I had no contraindications), lots of water and hotpacks.

Now at 48, I am post menopausal....yaayyy

onlyfreelycaged -> RE: Period (11/24/2009 3:11:17 AM)

I used to have terrible periods, then I started on the pill, I tried a few of them, and found one I liked.

Before I was on the pill, I would take a handful of advil, and as much coffee (or soda) as I could get.

o.. they have thies disposable heating pads made just for that area, and they help alot. esp if you're running around all day at work and can't have a heating pad at the time...

kanina -> RE: Period (11/24/2009 5:57:13 AM)

the birth control pill does wonders, but i have to hide it, because my mother thinks i take it to have sex, and she doesn´t want me to (like i'm not having sex without it, shes a bit naive...[:D])

Thanks once again for all the advice, it will help me and others i hope :D
