Ok, My experience with tens units is small but my knowledge of electricity is large. Like everyone else advises, start slow. First place the electrodes on an extremity and gradually increase the power just to get a feel of what your unit will do to you. It should start out with a tingling followed by muscle contractions and then real discomfort. The electricity is traveling from one pad, through the upper dermal layer to the living tissue and then to the other pad. You feel the sensations between the electrodes. If you put the pads on opposite thighs it will travel through the groin area. Now comes the problem. Electricity follows the path of least resistance. If you place one electrode on or in an area of a mucus membrane it will race towards to the other electrode by the wettest route. This could be deep inside causing all manner of problems to internal organs, including the heart. Be very careful of what might be between the two pads and remember, electricity follows It's path of least resistance! Some observations; The smaller the pad the more intense feeling at the point of contact. The larger the pad the more intense between the points of contact. Placing the electrodes over a major blood vessel usually just hurts. If you wan your partner to feel more trusting (especially when you are starting out) put one (large) pad on your partner and the other on the back of your hand then give a one handed massage. Keep in mind what is between the pads and the point of contact with your hand. I hope this has been of some help and I hope there will lots more information exchanged here. Electric play is not for everyone and some kinds play do not work while others do. For me, the snap of a high voltage sets my teeth on edge. It means that whatever piece of equipment I am working on has just had a bad problem. Ken54
