You know, you just can't make this shit up. I've had him on ignore for a month, and only refer to his posts when other people quote them. And he's still complaining that I'm harassing him? Always the victim; always the victim. This is beyond hilarious; it's just incredible!

The phrase "fish in a barrel" comes to mind. Even I never dreamed it would be this easy. Now that I've taught him to bark on command, I'll have to think of a new trick. Maybe I'll teach him to roll over and play dead. Oh, wait, no, I can't say that. Let's see.... maybe I can teach him to fetch links to crazy right-wing blogs. Hmmm.... the possibilities are endless...



Why would you put someone on ignore and then continue to post comments to them? If they are really worth ignoring, then why not really ignore them?

Far more often than not, I do. I don't have the man blocked because I have an allergy to him, or because he offends me, or because I'm trying to make any sort of point or take a stand. Blocking him is not the same as pretending he's vanished from the face of the earth, however comforting such a fantasy may be.

I just came to the realization that with extremely rare exceptions, nothing he ever says adds anything to a discussion - it's all confrontational, dogmatic nonsense. It's not uncommon to open a thread and find that over half the posts on several consecutive pages are Sanity stirring up shit and arguing with people. So on a whim, I decided to filter that noise out, and i found that most threads are far more rational, far more civil, far more intelligent, and infinitely more enjoyable.  That's why I have him blocked. It makes the experience here more worthwhile.

But, every now and then, someone quotes him, and the quote becomes part of the discussion. At that point, I may or may not choose to comment on  it. I've got the best of both worlds - 95% of his irrational diatribes are invisible to me, but every now and then someone quotes one and I get a good laugh out of it. The flow of the discussions is greatly improved, and the occasional blip is an amusing change of pace instead of a constant disruption.

I agree with Panda.

I've blocked a handful of people--not because I disagree with them, which would be fine, but because they consistently post crap that makes no sense, or is just incendiary, and accomplishes nothing beyond wasting time.

If something's going on, I'll see it in the quoted replies, and can take a peek. But most of the time, I can read a thread much more quickly and peacefully.

Here's the interesting thing--it's not uncommon, with only a handful blocked, that an entire thread is mostly those posters. MAJOR time saver in getting to the actual points people are making.

My two cents.

I'd go along with that. I've blocked a couple of posters (not Sanity) and it does save time and braincells.

Fair enough. But if somebody doesn't actually have any opinions of their own, and is just cutting and pasting links it can get a bit tedious.

That's clearly not what I just said. I was pointing out that it's not really possible to have a meaningful discussion with a bot that does nothing but cut and paste links or with someone who constantly derails discussions with claims that unicorns are real and that circumcision is the root of all evil.

Proud to be in agreement with RML!

Blocking somebody exemplifies insecurity. It's the intenet version of a child putting their finger in their ears and loudly singing in order to not hear something that contradicts something on their list of absolutes.

Anyone lacking the confidence to read something that doesn't generate a head-bob discloses their closed mindedness as well as their ability to reconcile their 'one true way' belief with conflicting opinion. Of course there are those that also can't have their agenda compromised. They especially don't like facts in dispute and tend to revert to the unquestionable 'good intent' response right before they block themselves from hearing any more heresy.

I don't even block the Nigerian, or the new waves of troll - the United Kingdom, 'get rich quick' partner solicitor. I respond by telling them I am VERY interested in helping him/her out and collect my finders fee. I tell them I have a local law firm on retainer for my other international business, and can't wait to partner with them. However, instead of doing it through the internet I require that they send me their name, local address, and phone number in order to have my Barrister contact them to set up the transfer in person. I've never gotten a response back - so far...

Hell, I'd miss out on a lot of laughing if I blocked some people, I'd miss the hypocrisy, the agenda based perspective, and worst of all I'd miss a plethora of sadistic opportunity.
