I viewed it more as a community gathering and a way to socialize. The reason I stopped going was it felt dishonest to me to try to pretend I still believed.

I am always surprised to see the left criticize religion when their beliefs fall in line with, if not the material, the 'spirit' of the sermons coming from the pulpit. "Delivering his festive lesson, Father Jones told the congregation: 'My advice, as a Christian priest, is to shoplift. I do not offer such advice because I think that stealing is a good thing, or because I think it is harmless, for it is neither.'I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses, knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices." Wonder what would happen if one of the faithful took his advice and did some 'lifting' from the collection plate as it was passed around?

Merc, here is where we definitely part philosophies, the Large National Businesses steal from us, as a matter of course, and we pay higher prices because of it already. Tax and hound the fuckers out of business and break em up. Thats me.

"Shop lifting" or taxation - most businesses and businessmen consider them the same. In both cases your effort and work goes for somebody and/or something that feels entitled and doesn't see the necessity to earn based upon their own abilities and needs to look to another source of funds for their existence. Ron, I'm surprised. Merc's just nuts, mischaracterizing extreme views as characteristic and gleefully attacking anything other than his equally dogmatically cherished positions as "religion," his replacement for cogent arguments. But you are far smarter than that--at least usually. I've certainly my far share of criticism of large business--some, not all. But advocating anything that strips them of cash is just a chaotic, knee-jerk response that ignores any causal relation. It's no way to solve anything, and certainly addresses none of the actual issues. It's just a teenage-type "hey look at me aren't I cool" pathetic pass at nothing, whether from you or anyone else. OK...who's next on the soapbox?

It requires a faith based position anytime the government is pointed to as a solution; never more than in this case. The good pastor only had the misfortune of being recorded when he said out loud what many belief. Seeing you back-peddle from it, criticizing now "some, not all" large business; and alluding to any action to the goal that puts health insurance companies out of business, or curtailing industry and manufacturing businesses to follow the religious belief in global warming, and its second coming - CO2, don't represent "chaotic, knee-jerk" responses? Other than the growth industry that sucks resources from the people - government, what large business and at what profit margin, fits your non chaotic, knee-jerk, paradigm? However, you have to get me out of your thoughts MM. The only thing separating your positions from any of mine are facts; can't help that - but as always - I appreciate your thoughts and your faith based beliefs. Too bad you hate hearing any truth but your own. Your faith is amazing! Go with your gods! May all your 'isms' benefit from entitlement tax dollars!

Things like charitable contributions of money and/or time could have made a huge difference. You can't blame the insurance companies for all of it. Not when John Q. Public refused to be part of the solution all along. As for the public prayer display, I think that's exactly what it was. Specifically set up to be publicized and broadcasted. I have no issue with people's beliefs in God, what they pray about or any other such thing. This was specifically done to promote an agenda. I didn't find it to be the most pleasant of tactics.

~ Fast Tint ~ Personally, I'm surprised that although the religious merits of this Bill are subject to debate; why isn't any attention given to the more obvious race based tax? Too much lobbying from the special interests involved with elective plastic surgery for that to pass - besides Nancy Pelosi alone would have incurred a $1 Million tax Bill if Botox, and face lifts, were going to help fund the health care Bill. So sometime in between Nebraska seceding from the Union, they came up with a white person's tax on tanning bed usage. Instead, the Senate health bill would impose a 10 percent tax on the use of tanning beds. Now although this tax doesn't affect me, I feel compelled to protest funding becoming the burden of the melanin impaired such as my lovely slave beth. Believing and enjoying the natural beauty in people, I don't have her tan; however many people, to the best of my knowledge the majority of them 'white', use tanning beds both for medical reasons (eczema treatment for one) as well as cosmetic reasons at least as legitimate as Nancy Pelosi's Botox. Grated tanning beds are not a industry or activity which has many advocates, one of the reasons it was picked to tax no doubt, - however what's next? Is taxing mayonnaise and white bread going to get consideration in the Senate / House conference committee? A 10% tax on tanning beds. No big deal right? In advocating for entitlements, or 'good intent' freedom limiting laws and regulations, it's always good to keep Niemöller in mind.
