Conservative and liberal extremes hurt everyone. This Nelson fella in florida is a pistol.

Thats a lot of hand wringing and drama over my using the words "liberal newspaper" in a purely descriptive sense MM.

No, not a cut. I mean literally.

That's why there's got to be a "conservative" version of everything, from Wikipedia to the Bible. Conservatives have for the past few decades moved from an intellectual perspective to blanket dogma. All else is "liberal."

When's the last time conservatives talked about moderates? Only to say they are rhinos--in name only...liberals.

I do mean literally--to conservatives, if it's not conservative, it's liberal.

You're an idiot. Who's talking about newspapers?

You made a comment. I clarified. You wandered off into wherever you go when you do what you do.

Have fun there.

Sanity -> RE: God, Smite This Health Care Bill! (12/22/2009 8:23:04 PM)

Don't get too worked up, its only an Internet chat board.

"Newspapers" is how you got started with your little tantrum, I wrote that I found the editorial cartoon that I posted in a liberal newspaper and you went into conniptions because I desceribed it as such.

Whenever you get lost in a conversation like this you can always scroll up, just a clue for you.

OP, is your objection that elected officials publicly prayed for their Country?
i'm just not sure if your object to this is because its Christian? Because its publicly religious(not JUST Christian)?  Because it involves faith? i'd just like to understand what offended you.

First of all, let's be clear who we're talking about here. These are the same people who, a couple of hundred years ago, were burning women at the stake for having too many cats. The exact same people. The only reason they're not still doing it is because those fucking libruls have gone and passed a law against burning people at the stake, so they've grudgingly adopted a different methodology. For the time being, anyway.

They're not praying for their country, they're praying against their fellow human beings. It's not a question of faith - it's a question of basic human values, and these people have none. 2 million of their fellow citizens -  the people these legislators were elected to represent - are driven to bankruptcy every year by crushing medical costs, and tens of thousands each year die because they can not afford adequate health care. And the ignorant savages in this video are praying to their god to protect the system that allows this, so that insurance companies can continue to make 200 billion dollars a year in profits and the CEOs of those companies can continue to make an annual mean salary of over $12 million. That's the problem I have with them.

Let me ask you something - you're a person of deep religious conviction (which I respect greatly, believe it or not.) How do you reconcile that? How do you reconcile that much human suffering for the sake of corporate profits greater than the gross national product of most countries? Where is the christianity in that? Because that is exactly what these people are praying for. How does that fit what you consider to be christian principles? I'm genuinely curious.

First of all not being a christian, I can't answer for them.  And I suspect that their aversion to this bill (or set if you include the house version) has more to do with parties than true deeply held beliefs.  Having said all that, who are you to question someones morality if they simply oppose this particular healthcare "reform" legislation?  Who is to say that they don't believe that this may hurt more than help those that need it most?  I, for one, am deeply opposed to both versions for various reasons including that it won't do enough to cover everyone and insurance rates for many will be going up instead of down.  Including cuts to Medicare which many elderly depend on dearly.  What about the morality of that?  Just because a bill says "reform" doesn't make it good.

I'll take it a step further - to most conservatives, if you're not even the right kind of conservative, you're too liberal.

I've seen this in religion, too.  If you weren't the right kind of Christian, you weren't a real Christian.  In this case, it was a few fundamentalists commenting on how there were hardly any real Christians at work, because they didn't believe the exact same things as the fundamentalists.

Amazing, the things you hear while sitting in a bathroom stall, pondering life.

Oops. Sorry. Missed this one.

First of all, I should make clear that I'm pretty much in agreement with you as far as this bill is concerned. The reason I question their character is because I'm judging them in a larger context than that one video and that one incident. The republicans have fought every aspect of health care reform right from square one, forcing the dems to strip out almost everything that would have made it a good and effective bill, offering absolutely no sincere alternative proposals or constructive involvement, making no attempt whatsoever to compromise or contribute, and some of them have openly admitted they were doing it because they felt that the best way to cripple the Obama presidency was to defeat health care. It's not simply a question of them opposing this bill - they have fought tooth and nail to prevent any health care reform at all, or to at least damage it to the point where it causes real harm to tens of millions of innocent citizens, and for no other reason than party ideology.

That's evil. That's corrupt. That's nothing short of a crime against humanity and a betrayal of both their country and their vows of office, and that's why I question their morality. This video is just a snapshot of one brief moment in their year-long fight to strengthen their party by harming the people who elected them, and their piously beseeching their "god" to help them in that cause is sickening to me.

That's rather far from the truth.  There are *some* conservatives that are guilty of that, just like there are liberals who see anything as non-liberal as being "fanatically conservative" (a phrase I've actually seen a liberal use to describe someone virtually at 0,0 on every political scale imaginable).

But to paint "all  conservatives" or "all liberals" as such is a faulty generalization; something that is used way too often these days.

The blanket, false, and down right ridiculousness of just what is highlighted is extraordinary, and speaks so loudly for itself that just highlighting them is enough. i won't even bother to comment on the 2nd paragraph. All i can say is just WOW. As conservative as i am...i have NEVER, and COULD never, bring myself to, in good conscience, condemn ALL liberals. i am just happy there are decent, and fair minded folks out there of ALL parties.

breatheasone -> RE: God, Smite This Health Care Bill! (12/25/2009 1:55:53 AM)

ThatDamnedPanda, i would like to know what other, and how many other groups of people, do you blanketly judge?

Good for you.

But what in the world does that have to do with what I said?

yummee -> RE: God, Smite This Health Care Bill! (12/25/2009 3:29:06 PM)

I thought it was Democrats who stripped the bill down so that other Democrats would vote for it.  I don't recall any Republican saying "take this out and I'll vote for it" or "give me this and I'll vote for it."  If Republicans agreed to vote for the bill if X, Y and Z were stripped out of it, I think the Democrats should go back to the original, cause they clearly got robbed.

According to today San Francisco Chronicle, "Vice President Joe Biden presided over the 60-39, party-line vote, which brings Democrats closer than ever to realizing their 70-year-old goal of universal health coverage."
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2009/12/25/MN251B9E7A.DTL

I read "party-line vote" to mean that no Republicans voted for it.

If you are saying that Republicans fought it tooth and nail, I agree.  I'm just wondering how any Republican got the Democrats to strip anything at all out of the bill, since the Republicans have said they wont vote for any version of it.  It was my understanding that various Democrats stripped parts out or they wouldn't vote for it.

A Democrat's View from the House

Although the art of legislating involves compromise, I believe the Senate went off the rails when it agreed with the Obama Administration to water down the reform bill...

This is all very funny to read in light of the way moderate Liberals such as Joe Lieberman are treated these days.

Supporters of the weak Senate bill say "just pass it -- any bill is better than no bill." I strongly disagree -- a conference report is unlikely to sufficiently bridge the gap between these two very different bills. It's time that we draw the line on this weak bill and ask the Senate to go back to the drawing board. The American people deserve at least that.

I like her.

I don't know why you found it so ridiculous.

Out of 177 Republican members of the House exactly one voted for the health care reform bill and exactly zero Republican members of the Senate voted for their version.

Do you think these fair-minded folks were acting on their consciences or were other motives present?

Oh, for gods sake grow up. I told you that you were rude in an email two years ago and you're still crying over it? If you're still having issues after this much time, see a shrink.

Maybe you and Panda could ask around and get a bulk rate on therapy together. Tell them you have "sanity" issues. I'm sure they'll understand!
