These are mine (I guess):

Ran
Pulp Fiction
Berlin Alexanderplatz
Seven Samurai
Citizen Kane
Cyrano de Bergerac
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Ju Dou
To Have and Have Not
Gandhi

But that list could change. Anyway, they're all masterpieces.

Edited to add: I really, really like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest and My Life as a Dog, but I can't quite put them in the category of the greatest movies of all time.

"Ran" is one of the most beautiful movies I've seen.........I remember being at home, sick with fever, watching it....mesmerized.

Let's see, probably not what I would necessarily consider the 5 bestmovies but rather movies I will always stop to watch if I encounter them:

Godfather
Godfather II
The Patriot
Good Will Hunting
Sound of Music

Also:

The Thomas Crown Affair
Matrix
The Quiet Man
Gladiator
Fiddler on the Roof

OK, that's enough

A few more came to mind that I thought I should mention

An Affair to Remember (I should have listed that one in my top 5)

There's Something About Mary

Amadeus

You've Got Mail

Meet the Parents/Meet the Fockers

Grumpy Old Men/Grumpier Old Men

The last two, IMO, the only two sequels ever made that were every bit as good, if not better, than the originals.

I know these aren't blockbuster cinema giants. But the category was titled YOUR favorite movies, not THE greatest movies.

Why do you think Passion of the Christ was tagged as anti Semitic?

1. Because Gibson's father seems to be, and it took forever for Gibson himself to separate himself from his father's statements.
2. Because Gibson himself either couldn't be diplomatic enough during and before the controversy, or didn't WANT to be diplomatic enough in order to generate controversy and sell more tickets (and his production company was unnecessarily stonewalling in letting Jewish groups see the script).
3. Gibson used some sources that were themselves anti-semitic (I'm not sure about this and I'm relying on memory here), which raised suspicions.
4. The movie depicts Jewish officials conspiring to kill Jesus, and some people will just protest about seeing that depicted on film. This is actually the least of it, because anyone this sensitive would have already been affectd by 1-3 above.

Was there something anti-semitic in the film? I didn't see it. Millions of other people who saw the film didn't pick up on it. The usual suspects in the Arab world said it showed how evil the Jews were. I don't think it contributed one bit to anti-semitism. On the contrary, the message was all about love and forgiveness toward specific sinners, just the same as in the New Testament.

The critics all jumped on the sadism bandwagon after the movie was released -- one indication that the anti-semitism criticism was a flop (I really didn't hear much about anti-semitism after the movie came out). The blood and violence didn't do anything for me except raise my own compassion.

I'd be interested to know if any sadists or masochists here found the blood and guts an erotic turn on.

To Kill a Mockingbird
The Wizard of Oz
My Fair Lady
Chicago

Celeste, if you ever get the chance to see the musical Chicago, you'll love it. It's even more sizzling than the movie.
12 Angry Men and Mockingbird almost made my list, too. The recent remake of 12 Angry Men wasn't as good as the original, but was a pretty good movie too.

Wow, am I the only one who puts a Disney movie or even an animation film in my top five?

HEY! I had Incredibles!

Other excellent animated flicks (in no particular order):

Shreck
Shreck 2 (not as good as the first)
Fantasia
Sleeping Beauty
That Japanese movie about the moving castle. Can't remember the name.
Metropolis (the non-animated version from the 20s is my favorite silent flick)
Toy Story
Monsters
Finding Nemo

Some I like for the animation, some were just funny and well-written.

6. Goonies. Lol Ok I know this is supposed to be 5 but I couldn't help myself.

Ok, this is totally a threadjack but I gotta talk about The Goonies.

I think The Goonies is a generational marker.

I don't know anybody older than about 31-32 who thinks it's even watchable, and I don't know anyone younger who doesn't think it was the defining buddy movie of their childhood and a towering work of cinematic genius.

Sadly, I'm on the old fogey side of this one. I don't get this movie, AT ALL. I seem strangely immune to the charms of Harry Potter too, so maybe it's some kind of a genetic thing.

I have a good friend (who loves both The Goonies and HP) I've discussed this with and she thinks it's just that my heart is a cold black cinder.

Your top 5 favorite Movies of all time?

I have one favorite, and then about 100 tied for second place.

#1 is Groundhog Day.

Everything else is commentary.

Hard to limit it to just 5, there are so many good movies out there. But, this is my attempt;

The Star Wars Triology
The Boys in Company C
Streetcar Named Desire
A Christmas Carole ( with Allastir Simms )
Three Godfathers and The Sons of Katie Elder tie for this spot

Definitely one of the best of all time.

For anyone interested in finding out more about any of the movies mentioned here, the best movie information website I've ever seen is IMDb.com

LOL at "cold black cinder"..........and hey. I'm a profile perv, looking at damn near everyone I can (out of human curiosity, not that I'm bi or gay.....not that there's anything wrong with that LOL), just wanted to let you know you did yours justice, very nice. And if I can butt in a bit, you seemed unsure as to where you "fit" in all this, to me, you sound like a bottom. And a good one, ladies!!

I loved that one too. We had an incident at a restaurant about a month ago. When we asked for our bill the waitress said that the couple that just left had already paid it. We were floored, had never seen them before, didn't talk to them or anything. So now we plan to "pay it forward" and do the same thing for someone else. It will be fun choosing our couple.
