I heard the reason for this was, the muezzins, were so many and sort of competing to be heard the most, that it became an annoyance to the people who live there. I suppose, it is a bit like if in your city, there was lots of churches, and in order to get the most people in their church, they rang their bells with more ferocity, imagine that, living in an area surrounded by churches who were all competing at going to church time, I am sure you would agree it was a racket, not at all pleasant. In Islamic countries, the call to prayer happens daily, I think five times on normal days and seven times on fridays, the first call starting about 4 am, perhaps the muezzins have basically stuffed themselves up with what they are doing, couple their call, with PA systems, and I can see even the most faithfull, might wish for some peace and quiet. I have heard the call to prayer in an Islamic city, and I find it very soothing, especialy the early morning call, so much better than the squarking of an alarm clock. The evening call at sundown, similarly, very soothing.
