Hi and congratulations. When I had my son I didn't want any medicine at all. So I look up everything I could to help and I found that beathing exercises and a lot of walking helped and having something to focus on helped a lot to. I hope everything goes great for you. And just remember that whatever you chose it is your choice and no one esles don't let anyone made the choice for you.

I have one. Didn't want any pain meds until they induced my labor...OMG I could not get the meds fast enough! But I have a fairly high pain tolerance and fast breakdown of the meds. So 3 epidurals and a local for the incision to keep me from tearing... all in under 6 hours...I felt NOT A THING when it was time to PUSH! The last epidural and the local were given within 45 mins of each other...and the doc had gone home to go to bed!

A local anesthic(sp?) you are referring to <*whis31*?> Hmmm i was reading that somone said morphine in between contractions. I am guessing that, it didnt have any affect on the baby. Im just asking because that sounds like something I could look into. Just for relaxation purposes. I am starting to do the bouncy thing on the big ball and then the squats.

Oh and Jeff, sorry to disappoint you lol lol with the topic title! lol.

Anyways, i think i had ONE BH contraction...other times just a mild menstrual like cramp. Nothing i couldnt deal with, it was just more irratating than anything. I am going to look into a Dola, though I havent even heard of those until recently. I wouldnt even begin to know where to find one. Maybe i will ask my doctor when i visit again.  Right now, baby is 3lbs and 13ozs as of Christmas Eve (12/24) and I just turned eight months Tuesday (12/29). So I believe that is a good weight for the baby as of now. lol. Hopefully she stops at the 6lb mark lol.

Someone also mentioned something about burning...was it just your back, or does it burn as the baby is being delivered.

Again, I really thank you all for your responses. This is my first child, and it is great to hear from those who are not only mothers, but mothers within a lifestyle that i find suitable for me. Thank you again.

Hello slavjale,

Yes, the burning I was referring to was just in my back. Possibly due to what is referred to as ‘back labor’, it felt really good to have him rub my lower back; until I laid on it and thought that the bed was on fire.

It was funny, looking back on it… They kept feeling the bed under me saying, “there’s nothing there”, but every time I laid down…. I think they thought I was losing my mind. *grins*

Though, having known someone who went through what Beth described, requireing some outrageous amount of stitches, both inside and out; I suspect that burns.

My tearing, however, I didn’t realize had happened until they told me I needed stitches.

My mom swears by “Tucks Pads” to help speed up recovery. I used them, seemed to work just fine.

Another thing I would add, in case you have not considered it, and are not too shy; I wish I had thought to have at least one of them videotaped. Big chunks of the experience were lost in the ‘excitement’ of the moment.

After my first was born, I had asked "what is it?!?" I was given an aswer, but had to keep asking; for whatever reason, I could not hear very well at that time.

My best,

Kim

My son was a c-section (not an emergency one, just never went into labor) and I had general anethesia. I had asked them about any danger to the baby and was told that it would make the initial APGAR scores lower but pose no long term danger. I would imagine it is the same with morphine during labor.

Low initial APGAR scores (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration) are nothing to be concerned about unless you are planning on being one of those super competitive moms who wants to tell everyone her baby has great "everything." They do them immediately after birth and again at the 10-30 minute mark. In a situation like mine with general anesthesia, my son's initial was low (but not below 3, which is dangerous), but the second set was just fine.

Talk to your doctor about it to ease your mind and get his/her viewpoint on it.

Good morning!
My first was 23 1/2 hours of weird with lots of problems- they broke my water, had me hooked up to lines, couldn't walk, catheter..everything. And nothing was really wrong. When it came time to push, my son got stuck and they used forceps to turn his head and pull. My mom al;most passed out and i still tore from end to end. Nothing sexual at all about it. I just had no choices in anything that time..that was in 1996 too. My next two I was also in a hospital but could walk had no lines and nothing at all for pain. After a few hours, they just popped right out. Although being conscious, I liken the pain to a wave. It rose, came up, and peaked then went down, then you wait for the next one to hit. I figured out that if I could breath, ride that wave-putting myself OVER the peak of the pain mentally-I was okay. It helped after each wave to shake my arms, stamp my feet and shake just to relive myself of the stress during the wave. Hopefully that is one technique that might work for you. And both of my girls I went home the very next day on choice. I felt good.

So I guess yeah for breathing and mentally putting yourself over the pain or along with it, instead of fighting it, it can work. I mean, just like in BDSM, the pain will stop when it stops, we really have no choice. Well, I have, I should say but good luck!!! Oh and breastfeeding, your nipples just get real sore the first week or two, then you get used to the pulling, and it is not really nipple sensation when you feed, it is just pulling of the muscle a bit.

Love,
Zechriel

I think the way I process pain may have helped, but it is also such different pain that it is hard to relate them.  I eventually needed a c-section after hours and hours of going totally natural.  Certain breast play activities make me more sensitive/sore/tender when breast feeding, but that certainly doesn't stop me.

im nto sure on this, i tend to considre myself a masochist to an extent, and while havign had a child i had induced labor (which as soem ahve said started strong, i never felt any contractions, and i was induced for 2 days before they decided i HAD to ahve an epidural to help me relax and get farther along. and then about 10 minutes after the epidural baby and my vitals started dropping so they wheeled me off to an emergency c section,

and then i didnt have anypain
even after the c section i didnt take pain meds, i didnt neeed to i wasnt in pain. i dunno though, maybe im wierd
