Sounds like Kittin is a little homophobic herself, or has no idea what she is referencing.

Dude, I was quoting Phelps himself - you should have taken the trouble to, you know, read my post before jumping to (erroneous) conclusions. The fact that I wished subtee's son the best, and that I said Aylee's idea was brilliant, should have given you more than an inkling about my opinion on the subject :-) .

First time ever I've been called homophobic: it's been a funny day, for sure [sm=biggrin.gif] .

Edited because I just saw that the above's already been covered - cheers, all of you :-) .

No! No! *CATSHIT!* Get a bunch of catshit and put it in a 5 gal pail and mix it with water until it's a soupy stinking mess then have one guy driving a pickup truck and the guy with the pail in back and you can hit about twenty of them with it!
They'll be puking their guts out! I empty Bubba's box and I almost GAG!

I came across the Phelps group a few years ago when he and his mass of followers decided to protest at the funeral of a soldier from my area. He made all the papers about how he would bring so many of his flock and blah-blah-blah...

There is a loose-knit, national group called the Patriot Guard Riders that was formed for the specific purpose of shielding families from Phelps and his group. On the morning of the funeral, Phelps was only able to muster himself and 2 or 3 others in a rented SUV, compared to over 100 bikers of all shapes and sizes. Every media outlest was represented as well, and even they out-numbered Phelp's and his followers 10-to-1! Phelps and his "group" never had the nerve to get out of their car.

Mr Phelps is little more than a wart on the anus of humanity. He and his group should not be ignored but should be met/countered with overwhelming numbers.

If anyone would care to see the photos I took that day I can post them on my web site.

~Dave

First time I ever heard of the Westboro Baptist Church was through a BBC documentary by Louis Theroux called The Most Hated Family in America. Louis spent a couple of weeks in the company of the Phelps clan - and they truly are a clan. I'd never seen anything quite like it, it was so bizarrely horrible.

At the same time, I felt terribly sorry for them, especially the children (the Phelps grand-daughters are especially endearing), because they have so obviously been raised in this crazy atmosphere of hatred... they don't know anything else, so they don't know any better.

At one point, someone in a passing car threw a full drink can at one of the kids that was piquetting... the poor little boy can't have been more than six or seven years old, if I remember rightly. Really sad.

I hope that they have grown-up and are able to judge their elders for what they are... though I'm not holding my breath *sigh*.

I recommend the documentary to anyone who wants ammo against these whackjobs - it's on youtube I believe, available for everyone to see.

Thing is, Phelps is as close to an incarnation of evil as I have ever seen.

And I didn't even believe in evil [>:] . But that bastard has made me reformulate my theory.

A warning to anyone counter protesting Phelps, do not do anything directly to him or his followers. A bunch of the church members are lawyers, including Phelp's and his oldest daughter, and they will sue at the slightest provocation.

I am just watching that documentary. Thank you kitten. I am gobsmacked.

For comic relief, afterwards, I recommend this clip: Aussie reporter propositions Fred Phelps Jr. [8D] .

"God is laughing, for you are all going to hell! You're all a sodomite nation of devil worshippers.

The Laramie Project is a tawdry bit of banal fag melodrama—sordid, cheap, unaffecting, drearily predictable—without the least artistic or literary merit or redeeming social value. Indeed, its only purpose is to promote sinful, soul-damning sodomy by playing on the sick, maudlin emotions of doomed, godless America and thereby to recruit ill-bred teenagers to lives of sin, shame, disease, death and hell!"

Hey, I liked the ill-bred remark.  I guess there're no gay blue-bloods.

It's quite obvious to me that good old Fred has repressed (latent) homosexual tendencies - it's the only possible explanation, really, isn't it?

I think bigger crowds outside the show give Phelps more of the publicity he craves.  Being ignored seems like better punishment for someone like him.

What I would do is help make sure that the show is filled to capacity, and ensure that the good attendance is covered by your local press.

The show is very moving.  My town's high school staged it last year and sold out every show, which was a nice tribute.

It is a pity that you dare to invoke God's name and show such intolerence in the same sentence.

Ooohhhhhh, the irony....

LadyEllen -> RE: Phelps' Wellsboro Whirling Circus and HateShow is Coming to Town! (1/15/2010 1:31:45 AM)

Phelps is a dick; does he not realise he is helping to publicise the show he finds so distasteful? Surely his God (not affiliated with any God you might know) will indulge his wrathful hatred on Phelps himself for every person who attends the show who only learned of it because of the protest.

Subtee, tell everyone to eat like pigs a few days before they get there and save their shitlogs and do a drive by!
Also, wrist rocket sling shots with ball bearings! There's all kinds of things you can do, use your imagination!

Very...creative ideas, Popeye. [:'(]

Great story, Dave! Phelps cowering in his car in the face of bikers protecting a soldier's funeral is delicious. I looked up The Patriot Guard Riders and here is their mission statement:

Patriot Guard Riders Mission Statement

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:

Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.
We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you. We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

Here's the documentary: The Most Hated Family in America

I've always been uncomfortable with folks bringing kids along for protests, like little kids holding signs depicting aborted fetuses at anti-abortion protests. It seems exploitative to me and I can't imagine the explanations that occur between parent and child about what they're doing and why.

Thanks Kittin!

This is very good advice and I will pass it along. Thank you, DomKen.
