Sighs...because Exit to Eden was contrived and stupid and not hot (Rosie O'Donnell in leather? not so much). It was also not even remotely like the book by Anne Rice, which was hot.

Secretary was the best of the mainstream Holllywood films because it depicted an actual developing relationship where both parties gained self awareness and love. Interestingly, the short story it was predicated upon by Mary Gaitskill was not as happy as the ending done by Hollywood.

Other movies that put elements of BDSM in it, like TV shows like CSI, etc. do so with the slant of news...throw a bit in to titillate the vanillas who want to see Officer Olivia Benson wear thigh high boots and pretend to be a Domme for a second.

Then there are the films that villainize the lifestyle such a 8mm and Mercy. Both of which I liked for the gritty realism, not the demonization of it nor making the participants serial killers.

I have yet to see a film more than Secretary that even comes close to the mindset as Holly says or the passion and dynamics of D/s.

There may come a time when Hollywood or Independents feature more intriguing and realistic plot lines but for now, I use my own life as porno fodder.

i totally agree with you. Had i read Rice's book before hand, i probably would not have liked it as much. As it was i just took it as a comedy. i thought some parts were adorable.

What I did like and many disagree with me, was Anne Rice the Beauty series. Some call it Castle Realm-like and gothic, but I love how it was written from a woman's perspective.

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty was really the best one though. I thought it was both hot and romantic, but I know people that hated it. They could never make a film of it though; unless someone like Catherine Breillat took a stab at it. She never shies away from women's raw sexuality.

Then again, I love Anne Rice, especially the Witching Hour.

Wikipedia is your friend!

Movies and TV

While BDSM activity appeared initially quasi "subliminal" in some movies, in the 1960s famous works of literature like the Story of O and Venus in Furs were filmed, partly in very explicit form. Most recently, with the production of 9½ Weeks, the topic of BDSM was transferred to broader audiences with high impact and notable commercial success. Since the late 1990s movies like Preaching to the Perverted, a movie generally considered a reaction to Operation Spanner, and Secretary started to increasingly reconcile financial demands with authenticity.

With the development of documentary productions like SICK: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist, Bound for Pleasure and Wir leben ... SM! an increasingly broader approach to the subject matter is developing, targeting on wider audiences.

During the last four decades, the spectrum of productions has been greatly enlarged, showing the topic has arrived in mainstream movies:

* 1925: A Woman of the World (Based on The Tattooed Countess by Carl van Vechten.)
* 1967: Belle de jour, by Louis Buñuel
* 1967 Venus in Furs by Joseph Marzano
* 1968: La prisonnière, - H.G.Clouzot.
* 1969 Venus in Furs by Massimo Dallamano (not the Jess Franco version also from 1969)
* 1969 The Frightened Woman by Piero Schivazappa
* 1974: The Night Porter (Il portiere di notte)
* 1974: Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August
* 1975: Story of O
* 1976: In the Realm of the Senses (Ai no corrida)
* 1976: Maîtresse
* 1976: The Image (film) (The Punishment of Anne)
* 1983: A Woman in Flames
* 1985: The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak
* 1985: Seduction: The Cruel Woman
* 1986: From Beyond (film)
* 1986: 9½ Weeks
* 1987: Personal Services
* 1993: Tokyo Decadence
* 1994: Exit to Eden
* 1994: Venus in Furs by Maartje Seyferth & Victor Nieuwenhuijs
* 1996: Fetishes
* 1997: Preaching to the Perverted
* 1997: SICK: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (Interviews with the dying BDSM performance artist Bob Flanagan)
* 1999: Lies (film) (South Korea)
* 1999: Wildly Available
* 2000: Dirty Pictures IMDb (The Movie is based on the Mapplethorpe-exhibition in Cincinnati)
* 2001: The Piano Teacher
* 2001: Beyond Vanilla, IMDb
* 2002: Secretary
* 2002: The Fashionistas, IMDb
* 2003: Wir leben... SM!, IMDb
* 2004: Bettie Page: Dark Angel
* 2005: Ecstasy in Berlin 1926 by Maria Beatty
* 2005: The Notorious Bettie Page by Mary Harron
* 2006: 24/7 The Passion of Life, IMDb Homepage (German)
* 2006: Psychopathia Sexualis, IMDb Homepage
* 2006: Hounded, IMDb
* 2006: The Pet, IMDb Homepage
* 2007: New Tokyo Decadence - The Slave
* 2007: Walk All Over Me
* 2009: Modern Love is Automatic

Besides these mainstream movies, there is a huge market of sadomasochistic Pornography, mainly in form of Pornographic films.The Spanish director Jess Franco developed several typical examples of the Exploitation-genres' approach, often based on the works of the Marquis de Sade and censored in many countries worldwide.

In recent years, movies like 9½ Weeks, Tokyo Decadence and Secretary have been shown on television in several countries. In 2001 the Canadian documentary KinK was the first television series on the topic worldwide. It has yet not been broadcast in Europe.

Other example of BDSM in television and film are:

* Lady Heather, a professional dominatrix who is a recurring character in CSI
* Pearl, a dominatrix and hit woman for the Chinese mafia as played by Lucy Liu in the movie Payback
* In Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000), Jennifer Tilly is a part-time dominatrix-for-hire and exotic dancer in leather fetish outfits.
* Mercy (film) (2000), Cable-movie with Peta Wilson as a submissive member of a secret S&M society.

* In the "Love Hurts" episode of the TV series House, Dr. House treats a patient who has a dominatrix.
* In the TV series Desperate Housewives, the character Bree Van De Kamp's husband Rex had an illicit affair with a woman who was able to please him sexually as a dominatrix.
* Mistress DarkPain, a professional dominatrix who is a recurring character in nip/tuck
* Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2007), a British series about a call girl who takes dominatrix lessons in one episode.
* BDSM: It's Not What You Think! (2008), a globally screened and well received documentary by Erin Palmquist.

Mainstream Films

Consensual BDSM is not generally depicted accurately or sympathetically in mainstream films, to say the least; however, film-makers often find some way to incorporate BDSM imagery into many films. The following films feature BDSM as a major plot point, not just as an exploitative add-on.

They do.  Maybe it's the films you restrict yourself to?  European and Asian films contain quite a bit of BDSM - and there are plenty of BDSM themes in many US films, maybe you just don't notice it?  Eden was and is probably one of the most tedious bdsm light examples for my taste.
Programmes on TV have improved their coverage of positive BDSM environments too.  And there are so many books that have either elements of BDSM or kink it's unreal.  BDSM isn't necessarily any more taboo than vanilla sex.

As LadyA already demonstrated, there is plenty out there.

Also, you have to remember that, at the time, East of Eden was a huge box office flop.  The movie itself was poorly done.  O'Donnell gave several interviews about the fact that, between edits and re-shoots, she gained a good bit of weight between productions where you can literally see the difference in the film.  It was slanted as a comedy, more than anything else.

Exactly and that's the way i took it; as a comedy. Also, i was so grateful that at least something was made about the subject that i ignored the imperfections.

I must admit, I have seen a lot o fthe list that Lady A gave us:) now I have more to search out.
One of my favourites will alway be fox mulder in Xfiles, being fed the black oil, bound to the table with chicken wire.  It still makes me ...happy, watching him squirm ..all those pokable bits... never mind, Im going for a cold shower.
I liked the book but hated the movie...that is "Exit"

Then again, I love Anne Rice, especially the Witching Hour.

I have just finished Lasher and Taltos is on its way, it is one of the best series of books I have read.

See a theme here? Dominatrix, dominatrix, dominatrix, dominatrix etc etc etc.

BDSM on TV is still in the realm of some sad beatoff at home watching an actress with boots and a riding crop.

It's currently doing more to perpetuate stereotypes than reveal any great insight into WIITWD, IMO.

I'd imagine this is at least partially because depicting a MALE dom might be perceived as bordering on abuse (or flat out abuse), whereas feminism is all the rage these days.

I don't think it's taboo at all. I think it's quite mainstream. It's everywhere and to be honest anytime I've ever mentioned it to people they snicker and see it as being geeky and nerdy and kinda like people who play dungeons and dragons or they equate it with the Goth kids who hang out on the corner in town at night trying to frighten the tourists from visiting the historic districts.

I mostly agree. A male Dom in full punish/discipline mode is going to be too close to (resembling) an act of unloving violence in their eyes.  Probably still a long way off from being depicted fully, and as Holly said, it's near impossible to illustrate a mind set.

Then again, I disavow any understanding of how a television executive's mind can operate at any given time anyway.

Lady A rocks!

Thanks :-)

My favorites are:

* Belle de jour (1967) (starring Catherine Deneuve).
* De Sade (film) (1969) (starring Keir Dullea)
* Venus in Furs (1969), directed by Massimo Dallamano.
* Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990)
* Quills (2000) (starring Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix)
* Secretary (2002) (starring James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal)

* Dollhouse (2009); the beginning of the 9th episode shows Echo (Eliza Dushku), returning from an assignment as a leather-clad whip-wielding dominatrix.
* On the Alias (2003) 2nd season episode "Second Double", Agent Bristow (Jennifer Garner) goes undercover as a German dominatrix in a Berlin leather bar.
* The television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has featured Melinda Clarke as professional dominatrix Lady HeatherLady Heather's Box". in five episodes, most notably in the 90-minute special episode "
* A Family Guy gag depicts main characters Lois and Peter suiting up for a sadomasochistic session while having a mundane conversation about unrelated matters from the plot of that episode ("Let's Go to the Hop"). Toys have been made of this scene. In the audio commentary for that episode it is noted that such a practice seemed normal to them.

This one I particularly love because

a) it is a brilliant show
b) it was a real relationship between a man and a woman
c) the man Joe (played by the all too yummy Justin Theroux) was the one that brought it up in the relationship as he wanted to submit to her.

* Season 4 of HBO series Six Feet Under features a character (Joe) who wants to adopt a submissive sexual role in his relationship with Brenda.
