I am an esthetician, I do waxing and i can say that i does hurt but if you can stan the pain, Its breef then it does go a way, go for it. Use a professional product that your waxer recomends for ingrowen hairs, also get a growth inhebiter, it will help stop the hair form gorwing back. also when you shave you blunt the end of the hair so it comes in sharper looks darker and thiker as well as itches, when you wax there is no blunt end it comes in finde and softer and if you wax for a while it you will eventually wont have anything to wax. Laser is aslo another way to go but it does cost alot your lookingat about 500 depending on what you wax, cuz hair grows in 3 different stages and it takes a while to do larger areas of the body and will need to get all of the hair. DONT WAX your self, it doesnt work properly, you need the right wax as well as you need to be able to hold the skin tight, and pull the right way for it to work properly, improper waxing can cause breakage and buring also ripping of the skin. So there is my 5 cents.
