Same reason I don't believe in Santa Claus.

Santa Claus is a metaphor for the spirit of giving.

K.

Santa Claus has become a metaphor for the spirit of shopping/spending.

If you don't have absolute proof, but have still chosen to believe that God does or doesn't exist, please tell me why you have chosen to believe this.

Wait.
What are you trying to say about Santa?

Really? How odd. I shop and spend every single week of the year. It always seemed to me that buying presents in a spirit of giving to others was different.

See, all these years down the road and slaves/subbies are still teaching Kana.
Miracle of miracles, he remains open-minded enough to still listen and learn.

If you want to chose to ignore that the average North American individual spends more in preperation for the holiday season than at any other time of the year, then go ahead :-)

What, precisely, is wrong with that?

I took you to be using the term "irrational" in a perjorative sense... but then I realized I wasn't sure, and decided not to pursue it.

Seriously? Ok, well I should also add that the extensive spending also often results in debt. And the idea that someone would but themselves in debt in order to be aligned with the spirit of giving is twisted.

Christmas is not a religious holiday anymore, not for the masses. The reason that I do not celebrate Christmas is not because I'm an atheist, but rather because I don't agree with the hypocrisy of the holiday.

I was actually using it more in the Aristotlean logic sense.
Rationally it makes no sense to believe in something that is unprovable
Thus, to believe in such an entity is an act of irrationality.
Hence, to do so is to take a leap of faith

Well, I don't think it's so terrible that once a year people go out of their way, even into debt, to bring a smile to the faces of those they remember with their gifts.

As for the rest, I don't know how we got from Santa Clause and the spirit of giving into an issue of whether or not it's a "religious holiday anymore," so I'll leave that untouched.

I can't, and don't try.
Rather I have the choice of taking it on faith that they do or do not.
Hence the importance of trust.
Shrugs
If I get wary, I always have the option of watching their feet-I listen with my eyes.
Of course, not to hijack the thread, but I could also make a strong argument for love being a form of insanity...
