I would think this issue would be brought up early on so your question is moot. It's doubtful the relationship would develop in the first place.

If my dog hated him I would rethink my attraction to him. I trust my dog's judgment. She loved him and accepted him as alpha in the house from the moment he walked in.

Cats are problematic, I'm allergic to most. Although we had his daughter and her cat for a year with no problem. Luckily she's a Himalayan and less allergen causing than most. So I was fine as long as it didn't get on my bed.

Signore, we have a big big problem. I hate to bring it up, but it's just dreadful, and I'm worried.

Oh, dear, my sweet sunny, whatever is this problem?

You are a dog person, and I am a cat person, and I will need to have a cat in order to be happy.

This is the terrible situation? pffffffft. Of course you will have a cat. But you must take care of it. If you had wanted a horse, well, then we would have to figure out how to make it work.

I was talking to a prospective Master before I met the man I chose.  This man was fun, young, well off, and in California.  He wanted me to visit Him, with the intent of moving there.  We talked for a few months, and in that time, he told me he didn't like cats.  I told him I had two and would never part with them.  Eventually he changed his story and said he was allergic and that I would have to give them up.  That was the end of that.  First, because I am NOT giving up my cats, and secondly, I wouldn't want to be with someone who thinks setting aside a responsibility for convenience is acceptable.  What happens when I become inconvenient?  Full time live in slave for the first time, in a completely new place, I am sure I will not always be perfectly pleasing, especially being a guilt ridden mess over deserting my fluffies.

Please do not EVER give up your pets for any reason other than severe allergies or extreme life altering situations. I don't think there's anything worse than giving up an animal because you "moved" or because someone doesn't like them. They're a member of your family, not a lamp. You make a commitment when you adopt. I've been fostering cats for a few years now, and it breaks my heart the reasons people give up pets... just don't do it.

How about, if the animal doesn't like the person?  Is that a good enough reason?

The pet was there first. That's part of the sacrifice you make when you adopt - your decisions may sometimes have to work around the pet.

Come to find out when you bring him/her home that he/she hates animals and you have both a cat and a dog. Would you give them away if you were told to?

HELL NO!

A home without pets is just a lonely place.

Yeah... that doesn't work for me. If my Dad needs to move in because he can't get around his house anymove and my dog keeps jumping on him and knocking him over, the dog will be rehomed. It will suck, I will cry and I will make sure they go to a very nice home but Dad is more important than animals. If I bring an animal into the house and it turns Val or a child of mine into a pincushion, it goes to.

Sometimes you have to pick between animals and people and which way you lean to shouldn't always be one or the other because the situations are different.

DesFIP -> RE: What if you met someone and they became very special to you (2/9/2010 11:05:10 AM)

On the other hand, if my Dad had to move in here, he can't bring his cat with him. I am so allergic to that animal it isn't funny. Two hours in his place and I can't breathe, eyes are tearing etc. Plus my dog would not take to it. But my allergies come first.

However I would pay for it to be cared for in a pet sanctuary.

A problem between an animal and a family member is one thing, someone just disliking an animal is something else.
And if I was cuddling with the animal instead of him, the answer would not be to further the wedge between us by throwing out the one creature who did give me love, but to address the problems between us. I am not compatible with people who cannot communicate and talk out problems.

(cries) I miss my dog!!!!!  I need a pet.

windchymes -> RE: What if you met someone and they became very special to you (2/9/2010 1:54:49 PM)

My pets have always been there for me, but people who "have become very special to me" have not. Easy decision.

How come foreverowned's avatar reminds me of Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter?

I think we agree - that's exactly the type of thing that I mean when I say "extreme life altering situations." Obviously if you're suddenly taking care of a family member who really can't have a dog around, that qualifies as an extreme life altering situation, and certainly isn't your fault. In that situation, I would just make sure that my dog was adopted by someone I'd screened thoroughly, and not just given to the humane society.

I cannot imagine this situation arising. I have two dogs and I mention them way early on when I'm talking with someone. Issues with pets would be resolved long before things got to that "special" stage.

If I had some sort of dastardly allergy to cats that was nigh unto fatal or something I would certainly mention it early on as well and if my prospective sub failed to mention her cat until I was staying over at her place - I would regard this as a supreme level of failure on her part.

Communication is everything.
