A few things that you can do to make first time meets safer (not safe - there is no such thing) are:

1. Get to know the person - talk on the phone, etc. The more interactions you have before meeting face-to-face, the more opportunities you have to get a good read of the person.

2. Meet in public, during the day, and with lots of people around.

3. Set up a safe call - If you don't call a person you trust at the specified time and give the right phrase or word (something unique that wouldn't normally be said), they know you are in trouble and will take appropriate action (call the police, whatever). Really designed for first time play at a private location. Also only works if you can be 100% reliable in making the call when everything is just fine.

4. Be alert, be aware and don't ignore your gut instincts.

5. Keep it vanilla and business-like.
