Wales, along with Scotland, has devolved powers from Westminster. Wales has control over education, health services and a number of other entities formerly controlled from London. The Welsh Assembly, like the Scottish Parliament is a democratically elected body.
As for the idea that the Welsh do not have our own language.....well.......Cymru Am Bith a Nadolig Llawen i pawb.

Let's just suffice it to say that the Scots have a different view of the formation of the United Kingdom. One that involves English treachery, slaughter and theft of innocent stones.


One LARGE (translation of Essex speak available on request) problem is ... the "English" are mostly bloody German, and therefore don't even like themselves (due to the fact that being English means one has to be objectionable toward anything German, err, well, except the "Queen"). Lying runs in the family faster than the Romans out of Colchester and the only thing that really established an "Empire" was bluff, propaganda ... and hired (or slave driven) help.

I'd agree with you Ken, but only because your'e correct and in no way to piss off the English by telling fact. They deserve a rest from the 2,050 ish years of war that have been fucking with their heeds.

Outlaw through England I am proud to be, it's borders (not mine) I will cross plenty times (since they're made up and are actually mostly based on the Romans mapping or borders (that is ... not "English" at all, let alone secure given the passage of time)

Wolfshead I am proud to be, does this, however, get me out of having to be polite to all the uncultured "English" who have cars, sat navs, yet have never visited "Marlborough Downs" ?

Well, I hate to be the one to burst the myth of the noble Scots being subjugated by the awful English, but really you ought to know the truth.

The Scots decided to go for imperial expansion, having observed the success of the English, not to mention much of the rest of western Europe in such endeavours over the previous couple of centuries when, in the latter part of the 17th century they launched an expedition to central America. The Darien Adventure wasn’t a bad idea in theory – set up a transhipment place where goods could be taken overland from the Atlantic to the Pacific, saving weeks of sailing and avoiding the dangers of the voyage around s America – a Panama Canal, without the Canal.

The whole of Scotland invested everything they could. There was good reason to do so as the fortunes made by previous such adventures were vast. But the expedition failed, utterly – and Scotland was bankrupted.

The Scots turned to England for help – a bail out in fact. It made sense to do so, after all the crowns had been one for decades, England was wealthy, the next door neighbour and would enable the Scots to benefit from imperial expansion, even if as a partner rather than solely for itself.

The outcome was the Act Of Union, whereby the two countries as well as the two crowns were united. Not because the awful English had oppressed anyone, but because the awful English came to the rescue of the Scots. Note here the similarities with the modern picture, whereby it is mainly the English taxpayer that has funded the bail out of Royal Bank of Scotland and Halifax Bank of Scotland under the national economic management of a Scottish treasury team at Westminster.

Now what happened in the half century or so following on from the Act Of Union is a different matter. The Jacobite rebellions that ended with the massacre of the clan armies were almost entirely Scottish affairs in their origin – or perhaps more likely French – but even so the Government army that subjugated the Highlands over that period was just as much supported by Scots as by anyone else, and many clans never answered the call of the Pretenders because they wanted nothing to do with the remnant of the Stuart clan.

And I’m sorry to say again, it wasn’t the English driving the clansmen from the Highlands not long after that, but the Chieftains of the clans who recognised the comparative economic benefit of woolly clansmen, (sheep), over the more traditional kilted version. All very noble and proud I'm sure.

Now all of this of course gets in the way of a good story or two as told by Hollywood and also undermines the sense of indignation at the awful English that has driven Scottish and wider “Celtic” identities and unity in this post imperial age. But then who cares what the truth is when you can spout racist insults and various other claptrap at such an apparently deserving target as those awful English?

Hey, I dealt with your adopted lot already and spelt out the rights and wrongs pretty fairly I think.

What's annoying is this perpetual Scottish bleating about how they were hard done by, and even more so when it comes from the descendants of those kicked out of their hovels in the clearances by clan chiefs that have somehow become English aristocrats in the centuries since.

The people who kicked me and mine from our "hovel" were English. My ancestor was transported under order of an English court in 1747 for a crime against the crown commited the previous year, maybe that year holds some signifigance?

As to the Act of Union nonsense, the Darien expidition was only necessary because the King of England, and supposed King of Scotland by treachery and theft, prevented the Scots from trading with England and had so alienated the rest of the European world that no one else would trade with the Scots either. So our choice was empire or starvation. Darien might well have succeeded had William III not been a coward and forbidden all english trade with the colony because he was weak in the knees that the Spanish crown might get angry.

And people wonder why the Highlands rose to support Bonnie Prince Charlie?

1746 saw the end of the various episodes of Jacobite Rebellion in the massacre at Culloden, brought about by the incompetence of the "Prince" and his refusal to heed the advice of his seasoned generals. The assembled clans in support of the Jacobite cause were rather few in number, since many clans had no interest in the Jacobite cause and of those answering the call many had gone home. Also of note is that a good proportion of those who carried out the massacre were clans supportive of the Government.

But massacre perhaps implies deliberate cruelty perhaps. What happened was that the "Prince" put his forces in exactly the wrong place and then, beset with hesitations, allowed them to stand and be showered with musket and grapeshot such that when the order to charge was given - the charge being the main tactic of the clans and an effective one, many already lay dead or dying and the remainder were readily cut down before they reached the Government lines, both from the front and the sides for in the interim they had been outflanked too.

If your ancestor was involved in the Rebellion then he got off pretty lightly in only being transported given the potential penalties at that time for such treason, but then its not often understood that such often constituted the earliest slave populations in what was to be the USA - the aftermath of the Battle of Worcester in the third episode of the 17th century Civil War standing out particularly in this regard and also concerning principally the transportation of Scottish prisoners.
