It's not everyday you get a lively historical debate here on CM.

Meanwhile Scotland was united willingly (or not so willingly, they were bankrupt) with England and had a developed legal system at the time so kept it.

<sputters>willingly?!?

Let's just suffice it to say that the Scots have a different view of the formation of the United Kingdom. One that involves English treachery, slaughter and theft of innocent stones.

Are we forgetting the whole lowland/highland split here ? Do you really think there were no Scottish clans who willingly joined the English ?

LadyEllen -> RE: Denouncement (3/2/2010 5:18:33 PM)

Indeed PS - but these little factors, along with the reality of the variation in ethnicity in the various regions of Scotland and the ethnic cleansing of the Picts by the Irish Scots dont chime with the popular, romantic version of Scotland now do they?

Why we cant deal with all this for what it is, is only explicable by reference to unrealistic romantic notions that appeal to an image such as one might find on a cheap tin of shortbread in a Loch Ness tourist shop.

We all have done bad things to one another - all. It happened for the most part a long time ago and since then things have changed.

I just saw on CNN that a Welsh man discovered a new use for sheep.

LadyEllen -> RE: Denouncement (3/2/2010 5:28:07 PM)

Youre losing your edge SB - that one wasnt that offensive and could be chuckled at even by some Welsh people (the ones with a sense of humour - easy to discern because theyre not beating the crap out of you for little or no reason)

"What a way to treat the wife" - an observation on the plight of sheep standing in pouring rain on a Welsh hillside.

So, what is it now, one has to live in a portion of the country to call themselves what the nationality is in that part of the country or does ancestry come into it and if ancestry comes into it, what about all those descendants living in other parts of the country, do they also bear the same grudges from something way beyond their own birth ?

Everyone, just look at yourselves, look at your immediate ancestry, if you can, look beyond, what do you see, a pure blood and possibly inbred whatever, or what can be described as a mongrel, a Heinz 57 variety. The latter is what I believe most people are and if that, how can anyone draw an allegiance to any part of their ancestry, and if they do, why, why that part ?

Could it be in reality, the choosing of one part of an ancestral cause to follow is more about the self in the present time, an anger perhaps, genetic, historical or just the way one is and you need a grindstone to grind upon, so why not dig up a past cause of choice and there grind away. Why not, it is a safe option, safe, because most people in present society care more about their present, the present that affects them and their family, not past families long since deceased.

Anger about the past, is  irrelevant, it is the now that matters and there the future, look into that future, ask yourself what do you want and by that what does everyone else want, your way, or just peace, health and prosperity.

If it is a mortal need to grind an axe, then pick those that manipulated the lives of all through history to the present, those being those that always profit from strife and hardship, for they are the same in history as they are now in the present. And of those that continue to rule and profit, again, what better way to take the populace eye of the ball than  allow tensions based on past race and nationality, yet another case of planting the seeds of divide and conquer.

Will we never learn ?

LadyEllen -> RE: Denouncement (3/2/2010 6:24:20 PM)

on the contrary JB, everything English is fucked up beyond all recognition, we're even producing ex-pats it seems who dont know the difference between denounce and renounce, but then we are overrun by Welsh, Scottish and Irish immigrants and ruled to this day by the descendants of the friends of Billy the Bastard from Normandy.

the first decision for us to make is whether to run away from this mess, or stand and do our best to fight it and turn the tide.

PapaBlue -> RE: Denouncement (3/2/2010 7:14:16 PM)

LadyEllen, the "thank you" was for your informative posts on the political history of the British Isles.  Obviously, some people disagree with your interpretation of events (and I might if I knew the subject better), but what you wrote has actually made me glad that I stopped to read what I thought would only be a festival of flaming trollishness.  I feel a little more knowledgeable instead of a lot more annoyed. [:D]

LadyEllen -> RE: Denouncement (3/2/2010 7:16:25 PM)

Oh! Well what can I say but that I'm flattered and youre most welcome!

There is a benefit to staying up all night to watch university history on TV after all, not to mention being with you guys of course (except the nouveau Welsh)

"Did you hear what the English, the Irish and the Scots did when they heard the world was coming to an end? The English all went out and got drunk. The Irish all went to church. And the Scots had a closing down sale."

"There are four kinds of people in the UK -
First, there were the Scots who kept the Sabbath - and everything else they could lay their hands on;
Then there were the Welsh - who prayed on their knees and their neighbours;
Thirdly there were the Irish who never knew what they wanted - but were willing to fight for it anyway.
Lastly there were the English who considered themselves self-made men, - thus relieving the Almighty of a terrible responsibility."
