Another sign of the times.

Homeless Man Lives off Frequent Flier Points
Free Nights at Hotels Keeps Jim Kennedy Off the Streets

By SCOTT MAYEROWITZ
March 11, 2010

"The recession has led a lot of Americans to find creative ways to survive. For Jim Kennedy, an unemployed 46-year-old California man, that's meant using his 1-million-mile-plus stockpile of hotel and airline points to keep a roof over his head.

Since being kicked out of his foreclosed home on Jan. 17, the former corporate development manager has relied on all those miles accumulated during years on the road to find a place to stay -- a Holiday Inn Express here, a Hampton Inn there and a Motel 6 in between."

He is quite lucky to have that option available to him. While it sucks to be homeless, the hotels he is staying at are some of the better "moderate" priced hotels. The economy sucks and I don't think there is anyone who isn't feeling it one way or another.

Damn, that takes a lot of work.  I've had Hampton rooms vary from 7500 points per nights to 25,000 points per night, even though the 7500 room had better TV, furnishings, and location than some of the more expensive ones.

I hope he finds work before running out of points.

HAHA, it's like a new form of unemployment insurance ! Eureka, again proven wrong when I once thought I had heard everything.

Hmmm, who pays for this ? Lemme see it is a perk from a transportation company. They get their money from travelers. I know of no other source they could possibly have except for investment, for which the money would come from where ? Whatever possible places their revenue comes from, it is no doubt generated by fees for transportation of people and the associated costs. People are us.

Given this, where do you think the money comes from ? There is only one right answer.

I wish they would just tell you what somthing costs, instead of all these sales, twofors, coupons and rebates, all that shit. How much does it fucking cost ? I mean if you got a half a brain you know that if you get a 50% rebate on a new car and get all the fabulous "cash back" you financed it right ? That YOU will pay the interest on it. How's about we just charge less for the car, so the fucking usury costs do not kill our customers ?

Damn dandy idea I think.

I wonder if he is eligible for unemployment insurance and if he can collect with being in so many different places all the time

Termyn8or -> RE: Homeless Man Lives off Frequent Flier Points" (3/15/2010 2:42:05 AM)

julia, you are a bad girl thinking like that, but it's fine with me.

I have changed my attitude about alot of things after the big bailout. Get everything you can.

Someone is homeless and jobless and we have unemployment insurance to help with stuff like that. Insurance is something that gets paid to protect you against a bad outcome, no different than health insurance or mortgage insurance, or life insurance....why shouldn't he collect on his insurance?

sophia37 -> RE: Homeless Man Lives off Frequent Flier Points" (3/15/2010 2:48:06 PM)

This guy seems pretty bright. There's no doubt hes getting unemployment. But what he really needs is a job. Unemployment has to help pay for storage. Which might be another place he sleeps.

stella41b -> RE: Homeless Man Lives off Frequent Flier Points" (3/15/2010 2:55:48 PM)

And where is he going to get a job being homeless?

"Here we go again - damned leftist scum trying to get more taxes out of me to pay for layabouts like this." commented a concerned Florida resident. "Feed 'em to the gators" he continued, before brandishing a pistol, "that'd save this country from these cocksucking commie assholes".

Did cucky hijack your profile and start posting?

such would require a degree of planning and independent thought that as yet is beyond the average muppet, Julia.

Damn, LadyE.  You made me laugh so much I started coughing again!

Termyn8or -> RE: Homeless Man Lives off Frequent Flier Points" (3/15/2010 5:04:23 PM)

Coughing is good for you, it expells excess phlegm. Now phlegm is not a problem, it is a necessary bodily fluid, but an excess of it can kill you. Just ask anyone who died from pneumonia. It's pretty close to the same thing.

Is this part of your 'channeling' or have you been at the herbs again?

Why would you ask a dead person anything?

Termyn8or -> RE: Homeless Man Lives off Frequent Flier Points" (3/15/2010 8:24:11 PM)

Sorry, I forgot to use the [sarcasm] tag in that.

Still this topic does bring up a few points. Why don't we not rely on my words, how about some advertising.

The dishnet around here is offering supposedly, rates locked in forever, which will never increase. But it is a limited time offer. Now what does that tell me ? The offer is forever but you have to hurry. Well why can't I sign up like a year from now for example ?

Years ago I had a credit account, a card locked for life at 6.9%, which is damn good. LIFE it said.

I got a lifetime warranty on a TV set.

However when they say life it is the life of the company. That cable TV company must be looking to get bought out. Crestar (the 6.9 people) also got bought out. Fretters used to have a very big market share in new TV sales here and sold extended warranties. They got bought out.

Now wait, Fretter's had opened in the supposed demise of the chain called Willis. Old Man Willis was no longer CEO, and it became Fretter's. All warranties were void. Crestar bank got bought out and their guarantees of a fixed rate forever were then void.

Now we got people going to court in this country, a few of us DO know WTF we are doing, who get out of foreclosure on their houses because the note has been sold. This works sometimes, it take alot or work to make it happen. I'm glad my house is paid off and don't hav to deal with this shit, but the major contention in court is "Who the hell is this, I never heard of these people, produce our contract" which of course does not exist. Very few people get that off, but the FACT that some do means that it means something. Just like a lifetime contract can die with the expiration of any of the primary entities on the contract, in my case Crestar bank, or people who fall for the cable rates locked in for life, if they perish, so does the contract. They do it all the time and that is the legal premise by which those few who know how to navigate the court system can now thwart eviction or foreclosure. The court MUST rule in their favor and they really do not want to. This is because it could get to the point, if too many people do it, if they inherit a propety with a lien they can similarly get the lien discharged, case law.

Don't even try this. I got one lawyer who might have enough balls to take a crack at it. You will probably have to represent yourself pro se. A lawyer actually risks his membership in the bar assosiation doing things like this.

My point in all this ? I am not really sure. But my lawyers' boats and houses and cars were not a birthday present from their Mommies.

Frequent flyer miles and frequent stay hotel points are paid for by the individual traveller, not any other consumer, just the person earning those points and miles.  Period.  It's not paid for by other travellers.

You stay at a Hampton Inn, IF you opted to join the rewards program you earn 10 "points" for every dollar spent and later you can use those points toward a free stay.  It is a form of advertising/marketing.  Something the company would spend anyway in advertising costs in order to build brand loyalty.  It doesn't cost anything to the traveller, as the traveller would pay the same if they belonged to the rewards program or not.

Sheesh... clues are free too if you want one.

It would seem to me that a guy 46 making  six digits per might reasonably have been expected to put a few bux up in a stash ... ya know that "rainy day" shit our folks used to mention like all the fucking time.
He does seem to be putting his unintended stash to good use...I wonder how the income tax on that works.  I have heard that you pay when you are credited with the points and I have also heard that you pay when you access those points.
