Status: offline 		This whole pedophile priest phenomenon is really curious. The Catholic Church considers homosexuality deviant. It also (presumably) considers pedophilia deviant. Maybe people forced into deviant behavior such as celibacy find it easier to engage in other deviant behavior. I don't know just asking.

Status: offline 		I think you are on to something there, Brain. I read an article recently about the sexual practices of men in many of the remote villages of Pakistan and Afganistan. As I'm sure you are aware, sex between non-married men and women is strictly forbidden, so a curious phenomenom has developed in the tribal regions. Pedophilia between men and boys is quite common, even though homosexuality is considered an abomination. Even among married men, they still prefer sex with boys and almost all men have at least one boy in their service. When asked why they continue to practice sex with boys even after they have taken a wife, many of the men say that women's bodies are not for pleasure. They are only for procreation. It's hard to imagine in a modern era when we so much about human biology and sexuality that anyone could believe that celibacy can be entirely healthy.

Status: offline 		No one is forced into the priesthood so they cannot be said to be forced into celibacy.  Celibacy is a vow.  Some priests break this vow by having heterosexual sex with adult women.  Nuns also take a vow of celibacy.  I have yet to hear of a nun being accused of pedophilia.  You are really still on your anti-Catholic rant.

If you think celibacy is deviant, you should see what my Master and I do regularly!  I'm not so sure a bdsm site is the place to call people deviant.

I don't think celibacy leads to pedophilia any more than homosexuality leads to pedophilia.

Pedophilia isn't deviant....it's criminal.

Status: offline 		Just another highlight of what is wrong with the Catholic Church, and why it loses parishoners in droves every day. It only leaves the radical fundamentalists Catholics who, imho, curdle the soup with their acid rhetoric.

I beleive, as has already been discussed, the biggest problem is celibacy and the rigidity of the RCC about homosexual relationships. I know so many priests who are obviously gay, and so many who would be much better marriage counselors if they where actually in a marriage themselves. I know many who are alcoholics and drug addicts. The celibate life does not attract a normal person. Until they can shrug off that lame 14th century dogma, the RCC will be stuck with mostly aberrant people wanting to be priests. I wont even get started on the male only thing...

It is a shame really. I was raised as a Catholic, and would have liked to find comfort and community there as an adult. Sadly, all that is left are fundamentalists being lead by dysfunctional men.

Thanks!  I wasn't aware of it. 

I still don't think deviant sexual behavior leads to pedophilia, nor would celibacy.  I don't think celibacy is deviant.  Undesirable maybe but not deviant.   Or wasn't that the question?

There's no proof that Vitter broke any laws here, it appears to be one Madam's word against another Madam's word.

Isn't the accusation rate for puplic school teachers for sexual abuse something like 40 times that of Catholic Priests?  Shouldn't we be just a bit more worried about that?

Yeah I agree that sexual repression is so rampant in our culture that we can't really call the Catholic practice deviant. You were talking nuns earlier; if you look into the bdsm practices of chastity and orgasm denial, you'll find that they effect men and women differently. Long term the sex drive in women generally winds down with a lack of use and they become bitter or even depressed. Men on the other hand get really desperate. So evil nuns and priests acting like complete asshats to satisfy their urges, yeah I'd expect that. Does that have anything to do with pedophilia, I don't know and sure hope not.
