xBullx -> Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 3:09:40 PM)

With all this talk about abortion funding in this health care bill, I'm wondering if the Republicans think a woman shouldn't have the right to do as she chooses with her own body?

Any opinions?

Musicmystery -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 3:12:39 PM)

Doesn't that break pretty cleanly along conservative and rino lines?

I really curious Tim.

And I did note through all this that there are some credible and enfluencial Dems that are pro life so where do they stand on this?

Musicmystery -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 3:25:24 PM)

True, the conservative Dems would be in that camp.

servantforuse -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 3:33:31 PM)

A woman should be able to have an abortion if she chooses. Taxpayers who disagree with that procedure shouldn't be forced to pay for it. Since it is a private decision, she should pay for it with private funds.

As of yesterday Stupak said his 13 are still standing strong in opposition to the Senate bill.

As I've mentioned before, hunky: does it waste less public money to pay for an abortion or to have the mother raise an unwanted kid on social security in a trailer park?
I find it completely disgusting that the people on your side of the Atlantic who are rabidly opposed to abortion are the same people with an objection to welfare spending. It's an either/or in that case. I'd have a lot more sympathy for the religious right types who blather about abortion all the time if they were willing to take a hand in providing cash to raise these kids. I'd bet Pat Robertson could set up a nice big slush fund from his donations without having to even look into putting any of the profits from his diamond mines towards that.
I've also noticed that the anti abortion lobby tends to be mostly male. Apart from Caribou Barbie, I can't think of any other conservative women who blather about that one. Even Ann Coulter seems to have more fucking sense.

Federal funds will be available for abortions in this bill. That is the hang up.

I disagree. You have no idea what are the circumstances surrounding conception, therefore you cannot make such broad assumptions. Sometimes conception is an accident, plain and simple. If we said this, we'd have to charge for people to be treated after having car accidents because they took a risk, etc.

In Canada, you can get an abortion at most hospitals as part of the healthcare plan. However, there are private abortion clinics which offer a more "discreet and comfortable" setting for a fee. Both options are available.

Actually the "religious right" types and conservatives in general are far more charitable than liberals.

And if you think in the US that anti-abortion sentiment is more prevalent among male conservatives than female conservatives, you need more info from "this side of the Atlantic".

servantforuse -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 4:05:29 PM)

This is a moral issue for many in this country. Those who disagree with it on moral grounds do not want to pay for it. There are many private clinics available for those who need or want it.

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 4:06:50 PM)

As someone who would need an abortion for medical reasons if I were to become pregnant, I do not believe that it should be thrown out. If  I don't receive the procedure Its fairly simple I will die. Its nothing dramatic, I do everything I can to prevent it. But I know I'm a responsible person and other people have the same condition as i do and are not as careful.

I also agree that most people against abortion are male, and have no idea the trauma that comes from the procedure, It seems a bit odd that those that are against it are the main reason they are so needed. (Both males and females are the reason for conception but you would not believe how many men claim to have had the snip or are sterile in order to have sex bareback.)

pahunkboy -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 4:07:25 PM)

everyone KNOWS abortion is a hot topic.  We also know that healthcare too is a hot topic.  SO why chance it by asking for this all at once?

I want to ride in a car.   and that car MUST have a luggage rack.

Of course they are: they can claim charitable donations as a tax write off then spend the next twelve months bragging about all of the good work they do.

Well the people who are morally opposed to it don't have to have an abortion.

I am morally opposed to people not taking care of their health to the best of their abilities by smoking, eating in excess and not doing a reasonable amount of exercise, but they get medical treatment when they get ill.

KenDckey -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 4:25:22 PM)

I am opposed to the government paying for ALL abortions.   However in the case of incest, rape, I see it as a part of a bigger regimine of medical care, and therefore have no problem with the government paying.   But an opps,   no.

As for paying for the little kid, that is a parental responsibility, not the government.   I don't see it as being the governmnet's resonsibility to take care of everyone.   I recognized at 17 that healthcare was important and worked for it.  Now I get it.   I paid unemployment insurance, just like everyone else, but   it is called insurance.   It isn't a right.   It is insurance that I paid for.   And looks like I will never be able to get my money back.   Seems I hold jobs way to long.   lol

If a woman is going to want an abortion let her get insurance for it.   AND PAY FOR IT HERSELF.   Not make me pay for it.   her hedge against the expense.   why should I have my taxes raised to pay for her opps

servantforuse -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 4:29:47 PM)

Those that are opposed to it on moral grounds are saying just one thing. Pay for it yourself. Don't force others to do so. What I don't understand is this. If this one item sinks health care reform, why don't the dems just get it out of the bill ?

KenDckey -> RE: Women's Rights! (3/18/2010 4:30:54 PM)

Problem is that the whole bill sucks

I do as well. I protect myself many ways and believe in planning parenthood. Also, when I drive a car down the street, I do everything I can to prevent an accident. Reality is, accidents happen. And they happen to people who were being extra careful. We can't start judging who deserves a funded abortion and who doesn't.

What do you say of the young girl who gets slipped some GHB and winds up pregnant? Or the girl who get raped?

Or the girl who is on the pill and still gets pregnant? The condom that breaks combined with the morning after pill that doesn't work? The diaphragm that wasn't fitted properly? The woman who has an IUD and still gets pregnant?

There is no method of contraception that is full proof other than abstinence of male-female vaginal penetration. Even then... swapping fluids during mutual masturbation can lead to pregnancy.

Imagine how humiliating it would be to have to go through a triage to determine if you did everything you could to avoid getting pregnant.

Rape and all that aside.   How about crossing your legs and saying   no
