HPVxxx -> HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/18/2010 9:47:36 PM)

HPV is epidemic now with 80% of sexually active people carrying it without symptons, and two strains of the virus cause cervical cancer in females.

Vaccinations are not approved for those over 27 at this time.

Learn the facts, google for information.

ResidentSadist -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/19/2010 2:29:45 AM)

This is in General BDSM . . . why?

sunshinemiss -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/19/2010 2:35:35 AM)

Because it is about sexuality I expect. Some of the people on this board consider BDSM a sexual act.

ResidentSadist -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/19/2010 5:53:53 AM)

Rape is a sexual act too. Does rape go in General BDSM? BDSM is not synonymous with disease and that is what the OP is about isn't it? That is Health & Safety.

GraciousLady -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/19/2010 6:05:37 AM)

It's in both general and health. I think it being moved to general is just a little mistake. Replies posted are showing in both catagories at once.

stoshbig -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/19/2010 9:33:31 AM)

This is in Health and safety, HPV stands for human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection, warts, with oncogenic potential, i.e. cancer and abnormal cervical cells which cause another host of problems. Sex occurs during bdsm. That is why it is discussed in bdsm Health and saftey. Was that a rhetorical question????

This is definitely not spam!

My research on HPV said that the only way to never get HPV is to never have sex at all.  It's a virus that stays on the skin.  Our own immune system may keep us symptom free our whole life, even if we have HPV.  Yes, two of the 100 strains of HPV  can cause cervical cancer in women and that is a serious complication.  This means that every woman should have her regular annual pap smears if she is going to be sexually active or has been sexually active in the past.

When my partner whose immune system has been lowered due to a transplant developed an HPV infection, 4 different doctors reassured me that it was highly unlikely that I too would develop warts as my immune system is normal.  With an estimated 80% of sexually active adults having HPV sometime in their lives and many if not most never realizing that they have HPV, I really do not consider it a major issue that will cause me to give up sex.

HPV is one of those things where we have to decide if the enjoyment of sex and procreation outweigh the very great possibility of getting one of the strains of HPV.

HPVxxx -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/20/2010 4:00:24 AM)

Encouraging those under 27 yrs old to be vaccinated and spreading word of HPV and information is the only way to get it under control.

Being diagnosed with cervical cancer as  I was last year, without symptons is not a pleasant situation. No male I had been involved with or exhusband had any symptons or knowledge they had it. There is no way for males to know because they don't have symptions and there is no test for them yet. That is one reason it is so widely spread. A majority of people have no idea what it is.

Genital wart strains spreads pretty easily too and eventually will tend to break out but not in all cases. A strong immune system helps fight it. Low immune systems can keep it with a person for life. Smoking increases cervical cancer risk,

I was told of a 29 yr old who died from cervical cancer by a dom here yesterday. Since January I had 6 other fenales tell me they had also gotten the cervical cancer.

Awareness and prevention is the only way to control this epidemic. Just because it is epidemic and does not effect all people when caught, does not mean it should be ignored and nothing done about it.

I wouldn't consider it SPAM, and pushing Vaccination on young girls.

The vaccine protects against HPV 6 & 11 (low risk) and 16 & 18 (High risk). Cervical cancer is caused by exposure to HPV, even if the girl does not experience warts. The only way to ensure (as reasonable as possible since you cant account for abuse) that the vaccine is effective is to give it to girls before they are sexually active. The vaccine is completely in effective once you are exposed to ANY of the 4 types included in the vaccine. So "waiting" till they are older and active reduce a lot of the benefit as many girls will be exposed and be asymptomatic.

So the only way to ensure it's effective is to give it before sexual activity which means young girls about middle school age, and even that is waiting a bit late since kids are having sex younger now.

The idea that giving this vaccine will prompt girls to become sexually active is utter bullox, everyone know kids can't comprehend long term consequences (hence we make them wait to smoke drink and other activities) so why does anyone really believe that the threat of Cervical cancer 30 yrs from now will keep a teenage girl from having sex? It won't!!! So at least reduce the chance of her getting a deadly cancer by vaccinating her.

Cervical cancer is directly related to exposure to HPV, so feasibly Cervical cancer could be removed from society like small pox if everyone was vaccinated. Instead we with hold vaccination so that parents can pretend their kids aren't having sex. While setting the girls up to have their life drastically changed by cervical cancer 30-40 years from now when everyone against the vaccine is dead and wont have to bear any responsibility.

Do the right thing and get your kids vaccinated, if not for society and the kids next door, then at least for your own wallet and your kids wallent one the medical treatment prevented.

HPV isn't a decision between sex and safety. Cervical cancer is directly related to HPV exposure, getting the vaccine prevents cervical cancer, hence you don't have to choose between safety and sex. Those unable to receive the vaccine are the only ones int his position, no reason to make young women and your daughters go through that same choice in the decades to come. Check out Pathology for Health Care Professionals (Danjanov) or Tabers medical dictionary. The only know cause of Cervical cancer is HPV! This is not a normal neoplasm of cells like other cancers, this is the one and only cancer that can truly be prevented.

Thanks for the thoughts and discussions. It is the best way to help spread the word and information about HPV.

MissCake -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/20/2010 7:31:43 PM)

The following is a repost of something I sent out to the BDSM Yahoo groups in my area.

In our community, attitudes about safer sex, STD's and STD testing run the gamut from total lack of awareness to total vigilance.  April is GYT month - Get Yourself Tested.  I am tempted to stand on a soapbox here, but I will simply say, very few adults are as entirely abstinent as would be required to never have any risk of exposure to STD's.  That alone seems like a good enough reason to get tested.

You can typically get a full panel of STD tests from your regular doctor.  But this isn't your only option.

Free or Low-Cost STD testing is available all over Southern California.  See the links below for help locating a testing location.

http://www.rivco-familycarecenters.org/std.htm
http://www.ocasf.org/hiv_testing.htm
http://www.lapublichealth.org/std/clinics.htm

Here's a fun quiz from Trojan condoms about safer-sex practices:
http://www.trojancondoms.com/Quiz.aspx?QuizId=23

What to be tested for?

It's not just about HIV.  A full panel of tests can include HIV, HEP A-B-C, HPV (genital warts), HSV (herpes), Chlamydia, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Trichomoniasis, pubic lice/crabs, and additional conditions such as  vaginitis, vaginosis, PID, and yeast infection.

Remember, not all STD's have a cure, but all can be treated - to improve/prolong your life and reduce chance of transmission to others.

Bottom line is, no one here really knows if they are disease free if they haven't been tested.

No.  It's a young woman with a cancer diagnosis who didn't have an understanding of her risk until she was diagnosed.

vaccinations have lead to atypical forms of the same diseases. i would prefer to practice safe as sex as i can before injecting the dead hpv virus into my body.

TNstepsout -> RE: HPV spread the word, not the virus (4/20/2010 8:39:12 PM)

Unfortunately the HPV vaccine does not prevent HPV in the same way that a smallpox vaccine does.  It's more like a flu shot that covers some strains of flu vaccines, but can't get them all.  It does not protect against all forms of HPV virus that can cause cervical cancer and it also is not 100% effective against the strains it does protect against.  I checked out the number some time ago and I think it ended up with something like a 4% improvement over your body's own immune system.  Given some of the side effects that some women are experiencing, IMO it is not worth the risk and expense in it's current form.  Also, many women who have this vaccine are then under the impression they are protected completely from cervical cancer and may be less likely to get regular pap smears.

IMO a much better way to protect oneself from cervical cancer is with regular pap smears.

I had a very serious case of cervical cancer over ten years ago.  Had I caught it earlier it would have been a simple out patient procedure and a few follow up visits.  Instead it was four surgeries, chemo, radiation and a whole lot of worry.

Get those pap smears ladies.

You raise an excellent point.  Safer sex, vaccines, routine testing for HPV AND Pap smears are all important.  None of them replaces another.  You are right to remind everyone about the importance of Pap Smears.

Dead viruses cannot cause diseases.  You are confusing issues with one type of vaccine - attenuated virus flu vaccines - with another type of vaccine.

Wrong!

You forgot about Diethylstilbestrol...which was given to MILLIONS of pregnant women in the United States...until their offspring started dropping dead from reproductive tract cancers.

Women exposed to DES before birth (in the womb), known as DES daughters, are at an increased risk for clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) of the vagina and cervix, reproductive tract structural differences, pregnancy complications, infertility, and auto-immune disorders. Although DES daughters appear to be at highest risk for clear cell cancer in their teens and early 20s, cases have been reported in DES daughters in their 30s and 40s.
