It does not change the fact that Cervical cancer, outside of DES which was a prescribed medication to control miscarriages, it limited to exposure to HPV. Since DES is no longer prescribed due to the complications you mentioned. The remaining risk for Cervical cancer is still HPV. In the future I will try to not make such definitive statements, however the fact that a medication which is no longer prescribed also causes it doesn't change that fact that the vaccine should be used. Nor does it change the fact that it's currently the only cancer that has a working approved vaccine. (no idea if other cancers have vacines in the works but considering the way most neoplasms arrise it's hard to believe there are any.) I'm not trying to be an ass here, and I may very well be reading into your post. But it seems as though you do not support the vaccine or are against it's use because there is/was another cause of the cancer available. That's like saying college students shouldn't get menigitis vaccines to protect them from death and limb loss, just because there are other types of Meningitis out there too.

But it seems as though you do not support the vaccine or are against it's use because there is/was another cause of the cancer available... yeah, you are most definitely reading into it what isn't there. this slave supports folks making their own choices, based on as much information as they can gather together...and was merely correcting your statement that the only current cause of cervical cancer is HPV. get vaccinated...or not, but when calculating your risk, consider all the variables and don't just take one random person's word for it. this slave is 43 and as long as this slave was in posession of a cervix, she was at risk for developing cervical cancer, even if she never had sex...because of being awash, in utero, with the estrogenic equivalent of 35,000 birth control pills...it would be a really neat trick if that risk, along with all of the other crap that goes along with being a DES daughter just magically disappeared when the FDA withdrew it's approval for prescription of diethylstilbestrol to pregnant women...but it didn't.

It seems you would be the first to want to encourage prevention of Cervical Cancer from HPV after what has happened in your situation. I have already been contacted twice in less then a week from two doms telling me about females they know who died from Cervical Cancer and how they wished somebody had gotten to the information to them sooner. One was only 29 and the other did not tell me the age of the girl. What if's are always going to be around if life. It's not magic powers, it's part of the FDA responsibility to regulate prescription drugs. They have the authority to remove approval for sale/usage of the drug, granted that is only in the US, I can't speak for outside of the US. I apologize for reading into your response. Additionally my information regarding DES, it's usage in the 70's as miscarriage preventative, and the fact that it has been removed by the FDA, came from my Pathology book & professor, as well as my Pharmacology professor and reference manual. BTW, if there individual is over 18 I support it being their personal choice (since the vaccine is relatively new). However I also support it being a mandatory vaccine for both Men and Women for middle school age children. Just like many other vaccines are mandatory for attendance in public schools, granted if parent sends their kid to private school or home school, there is now way make them get it, and that is the parents choice, when the child becomes an adult it then becomes there choice.

It is a controversial vaccine and there are some questions as to it's safety. I, as a parent to two young daughters, would fight every effort to make it mandatory. If you choose to give it to your children then go right ahead. Don't try and force it on mine.

I am glad it is not at the level of being mandatory across the board yet. It make those careers where they insist on one getting them rather unattractive professions. I wonder if people working with kids and in the medical world are forced to get them? Traveling across borders is not much fun either come to mind.

The vaccination is not mandatory for anybody and in fact it is not approved for those over 27 at this time. Hopefully that will change this year but it has not yet. It should be available to both males and females who want to protect themself the best they can and stop spreading these most dangerous strains of HPV. I have not heard of any horrid out comes from this vaccine. Has anyone heard differently?

As a mother of a teen age girl. I did have my daughter given the HPV vaccine.
