We might be onto something here. Maybe this supposed "spirit" the law supposedly has can fix the trade imbalance.

In the US we don't have toys with lead based paint. If that ain't environmental what is ? We also didn't build cars that go by themselves because of a defective throttle or something, they too came from somewhere else and being under the wheels of a car is an environment.

I know that is flippant as hell but it's Friday and it was my turn.

I have learned, where nature is concerned, people are better leaving it alone, as we do not know or even understand the intricacies of what nature does.

And there you have it - you answered your own question.
Without these laws, then people won't leave alone.  Simple as that.

No, Trigonometry had it right in post 28, I was trying to bring light to the fact that despite the fact that we already had legislation to prevent or prosecute people from ( for) certain actions, we have in the last term of Labour government had yet more laws of the same nature. It could be a simple case of minutae, or it could be a simple case of we are already legislated up to the hair folicles, these law makers have to justify their existence, so why not add to what already exists as they cannot find anything else vaguely reasonable and out of the public eye to become unlawful.

I think in many cases they tried to solve problems by dint of legislating against the symptoms. The (thankfully failed) attempts to give the police the ability to punish instantly without trial or what not are a good example.
