winterlight -> I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/25/2010 9:33:39 AM)

I have been doing research on the web and sometimes you have to take it with a grain of salt. I read one thing that said to have lemon that cut down on you blood sugar. One said eat cheese.

What is a good book to read and what do you suggest to get my blood sugar levels down? I just had an A1C test done yesterday. I need some good books on the subject.

I am starting a walking program today. I have to take it slow because I have asthma. I have been trying to lose weight but my weight bounces up and down by 10 lbs. or so. My knee right now is hurting and physical therapist says to walk only on level areas.

I cannot go to a gym because my body cannot take weight lifting, bicycling (even recumbenant bike is out) and other machines at the gym. I really miss bike riding but had to quit because i have arthritis in my spine.

Thanks for help and suggestions.

Yes, I do know I need to lose weight and don't need comments about my snatch smelling bad as some have posted to me in messages privately. Keep the nasty comments to yourselves if you feel inclined to insult.

Diabetes Solution, by Dr Richard Bernstein, is the first book you need to read. Took my BG from 339 to the mid 80s, and I lost over 100 pounds. I'll get you another link here in a moment.

Sorry about your snatch.

The excess weight is the biggest thing feeding your diabetes.

Their are all sorts of activities designed to lessen the impact of "working out." Water aerobics comes to mind.

You need to start eating an extremely healthy diet.

I have no idea as to what has ocurred in the past that you are now a "pre diabetic"... But I can only imagine that your weight has got to be a primary underlying factor.

A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with diabetes...He is kind of fucked, in that there is no weight to lose and all he can do at this point is monitor his diet, excercise and watch his blood sugar levels and that still might not be enough to avoid the complications and future ramification of diabetes.

It appears you might be in a situation to remove your diabetes completely from your life by taking charge and the steps necessary to get your life and your body back in harmony.

There is a wealth of info on those sites. What it boils down to is, control your carbohydrates, and to a much lesser degree, your protein, and that is the surest, and safest, way to control your blood glucose. If you have any questions, I'll help if I can.

Start eating like a diabetic - eat small meals or snacks every few hours.  I know some people who do this and they are good at keeping their levels even.  It does take pre-planning, but it can be done successfully.

Thank you to all that answered!!

Domiguy - I love the Sammy Davis picture. He is my all around favorite entertainer. Nobody came close until Michael Jackson came on the scene. Yes, I followed them both and have their 45's.

:)

I do not want to get diabetes! I know people that have it. One lost his sight and the other is facing dialysis due to kidney damage.

igor2003 -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/25/2010 10:14:56 AM)

Like you I have also been recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and also like you I am unable to make use of most exercise routines and machines, though my problem is with my lower back and not so much my knees. In the past I have tried all the diets, supplements (hoodia, etc.), and gimmecks like the diet patches and such, and none of them worked for me, so I recently started seeing a hypnotist for weight loss and have lost about 10 lbs so far. I also joined the YMCA to make use of their pool and joined a water aerobics class. Just to help burn more calories I'm going in an hour early just to swim some laps, and I have already seen changes for the better in my energy and endurance levels. In the evening I'm using 5 lb. weights for arm exercises while I watch TV.

You might benifit from talking to a personal trainer or physical therapist who can help put together an exercise routine that takes into account your own physical problems.

If you've been diagnosed by a dr I'm surprised he or she hasn't given you pamphlets, booklets, told you what you need to do, etc...

But yeah, losing weight is going to be the first and foremost thing to help you, along with eating small light meals and exercise and if you drink and/or smoke...stop.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/25/2010 12:37:13 PM)

You have to eat regularly, but smaller meals not larger, or at least that's what my dr told me when she said I was showing pre diabetic on my blood tests.

I went to two diabetic nutrition classes, and they kind of taught me about food and how to eat healthier, tips like measuring your food to make sure you're getting correct proportions. You'll need to pay super close attention to food proportion sizes. And don't assume all fresh foods are equal and good for you. WaterMellon and grapes have tons of sugar according to the nutritionist I went to and so do apples, so you can eat them, but don't eat a lot of them. For example you should only eat a 4 ounce apple and keep the skin on, not an 8 ounce apple, and you should only have half a cup of fruit, not a whole big slice.
If you drink lots of soda or juice, try to stay away from that.Juices and soda's are bad for you, even the diet kinds. One glass of juice has as much if not MORE sugar than a soda. Also try to avoid like the plague if you can, fructose or corn syroup or high fructose. It's one of the first things my dr told me to stay away from when my pre diabetes showed up.

You'll need to be aware of starchy foods, since starch turns to sugar and will shoot your blood sugar up.You'll want to eat carbs that keep your blood sugar even and comes down slowly, and not shooting it up fast and dropping it fast.  When my grandma was diabetic, if she had spagettie she couldn't have bread, or a potato.  If she had a potato, she couldn't have a big one, just a small one.

There's a website dlife.com and it's full of recipes for diabetic people and articles on diabetes and community journals and stuff. Just pay attention to ALL the health information because some of those diabetic recipes can unfortunately be high in fact, or calories or salt. Not all of them are very healthy.

But, of course, you'll hear the opposite of this as well. Since January, my blood sugar has gone from regularly being in the 300/400 range to averaging about 85-90. I do have medical assistance though diet is much of what has helped. The dietician I saw says to NOT do the snacking all day and night thing. She recommends three meals a day - no snacks - and to keep the carb level at each meal virtually the same to keep glucose levels from yo-yo'ing. It's definitely worked for me. And BTW congrats Level! I know how good it feels to finally get blood sugar levels and weight under control!!!! Good for you..........luci

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/25/2010 1:06:22 PM)

Yes, there's always differing opinions. So I guess the best bet for any one is to do what THEIR doctor recommends for THEM personally,  and then people won't be confused by conflicting information.[:D]

One thing I would suggest is to avoid corn syrup...which is distressingly common in prepared foods.  There have been studies that seem to indicate a link between corn syrup and diabetes.  Unfortunately I can't quote you a source on that, but it's worth looking into and better safe than sorry.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/25/2010 1:35:34 PM)

MC4 Yeah, and now studies are saying corn syroup in moderation is fine, but the thing is, it's in just about everything from bread to hot dogs, so how in the world are people supposed to exercise " in moderation" when it's in over half the stuff you could eat.

Check out www.half.com for any books.  I just ordered Diabetes Solution from one of my favorite sellers.  Thanks for the referral, Level!

I am not in the pre-diabetic state but this might help me with getting me back on my diet (diabetes runs in both branches of the family)

you can also check your local library for the books, no need to buy a book if your library has it. Then if you like it so much go ahead and buy it.

winterlight -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/25/2010 6:47:54 PM)

My biggest problem is I am addicted to sugar. And sugar from what I have read is like being addicted to another addictive drug.

I don't smoke nor drink. Unfortunately I am addicted to food.

Chill out.  I have diabetes and I have decent sight.  At 54, I just need reading glasses.  And my kidneys are just fine.

Diabetes is NOT a serious illness, it's simply a lifestyle change.  UNMANAGED diabetes, OTOH, IS serious.

So am I.  I have switched munchies and now eat a LOT of carrots, pickles, and nuts at work.

The sugar addiction?  Sorry to say, it's something you need to work with.

Sounds to me like you may need to find another way around your sugar jones.

OP,  please have a look at the links Level posted.

BTW...Level...have I mentioned how much you rock?!  Thanks for the help.

Anyway....
I'm type 2 diabetic and have had some complications which I've managed to reverse.
I've chosen to completely cut out breads/grains/starchy vegetables/legumes from my diet (which means I eat meat/seafood/vegetables/and some fruits and limited dairy products made from raw milk) and have dropped a fair amount of weight.
I've not suffered from dawn phenomenon, http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/17561156.php , with morning blood sugar readings between 100-113 and daily readings between 77-95 and very little in regards to cravings.
You need to gain control of the foods you choose to eat but you also need to be aware of the role genetics can play, which was something I've had to come to accept.  I am also unwilling to continue to on medication when I know I can control this by diet alone.
My weight loss has less to do with vanity and everything to do with a desire to be healthy enough to live the life I want for a very long time.

Have a look at this thread for diabetics... http://www.collarchat.com/m_2878937/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#2878937
This is full of lots of great links and ideas.

Read food labels...know what your eating and how it will react in your body.  Be your own advocate and don't rely on a doctor to "cure" you.

Diabetes is not a death sentence...unless you choose to allow it to be.

Please feel free to email me if you need talk or have any questions.  Good luck.
