I'm curious what is a pre-diabetic ?
I had Gestational diabetes and I watched sugar and all my carbs and luckily I didn't have to take insulin. As for weight gain.. I gained hardly any weight.

Pre-diabetes is a fasting blood sugar reading of 100 to 125.

divi -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/29/2010 5:56:24 AM)

Thanks Level & Tazzy !!

BTW I need to go back and have a glucose test .. do you know if there is one that isn't like 4-5 hours ?

winterlight -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/29/2010 4:36:05 PM)

I had a fasting one and I didn't eat for 14 1/2 hours before the test. I didn't actually eat after the test until 17 hours after the test...

divi -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (4/30/2010 6:04:07 AM)

Was it just one test or did you have to stay there for a few hours ?

This describes a typical fasting glucose tolerance test.

Divi, having gestational diabetes puts you at higher risk of developing it later. Do keep an eye on your sugar levels.

I find the talk of blood sugar tests in this thread immensely depressing. Nope, nothing wrong with American healthcare at all, is there?

FelineFae, there's a bunch of differing opinions on how good for you or not good for you, those sugar substitutes are, but some people say it's all very very bad for you, specially if it has  aspartame in it.

I personally have been told a few times to stay away from things like sweet and low, and equal and splenda, and instead try stevia, of course I haven't tried stevia, and in fact prefer sweet and low, so I don't listen when told to stay away from it.

Some information links on artificial sweetners....

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=98494964

Just remember, all of these are identified as artificial, including Truvia which still markets itself as "a non-caloric sweetener made from rebiana, an isolated and purified extract of the stevia leaf, a natural sweetener source originally from South America and now used in many corners of the world."  ~from Mark's Daily Apple/The Truth on Truvia.

These are just a few links, if you take the time to look you'll find the information you need to make an informed decision as to what's right for you.

*edited to add....I included the links for stevia, which is natural and not artificial, because even though for many years it's been available here in the US as a food supplement, only recently has it been seen as a viable sweetener...hence Truvia.  Stevia is an aquired taste, to be sure, but there are health benefits for diabetics with proper use.  It has been shown to aid in controlling blood glucose readings.  I use this brand in my coffee and tea, one or two drops... https://www.nunaturals.com/product/102

Hi,
Check your local hospital, they'll likely have diabetes classes. One of the things you'll learn is there's no such thing as a pre-diabetic.
Follow a proper diet, veggies, fruit, protein. Cut down on breads, rices, noodles. Exercise. Try walking. Test your blood sugar regularly and see your general practitioner or endocrinologist to decide on medications.

What in the world does one have to do with the other?

winterlight -> RE: I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic what can i do to get my blood sugar down? (5/1/2010 12:27:05 AM)

I have had different tests. One is fasting for 12 hours and having blood drawn for an A1C test. It looks to see how your blood sugar is for weeks or months.

I have had the one where they make you drink a bottle of orange drink and they draw blood from you.

It is quite different from when you had to drink a bottle of orange drink every hour or so back in the 1980's.

I do test often. But I need to go to the Dr.. just so hard with that test it takes a few hours. I do need to stop putting it off.

As long as your levels are normal, that's overtesting. A fasting blood sugar coming in around 110 in the morning should be fine. But without any signs of increasing levels, you shouldn't have to do that.

ty Des...

Mine usually comes in at 90 in the morning ..
I'm gonna go for the test hopefully this week

If there's no such thing as pre diabetic, how come health classes and  dr's and blood tests that indicate your fasting sugar levels  and other stuff are saying there is.

winterlight,

There are some foods that can help with blood sugar management:

Coffee is one, lentils are another and also cinnamon.

Once you get your sugar craving under control, if you feel you must have something sweet, both agave nectar and coconut sugar have a lower glycemic index.
Agave nectar tastes quite a bit like honey and you can bake with coconut sugar.

You can get stevia at your local natural foods store.

The best things that you can do re: lowering your blood sugar levels are losing weight and daily excercise...any kind of excercise.
I would suggest asking your MD for a referral to a nutritionist and if your insurance won't pay for a glucometer then most drug stores and places like Target etc carry their own [inexpensive] brand (with reasonably priced testing strips and lancets). I find testing to be a great accountability tool and you have the benefit of discovering which carbs raise your blood sugar the most.

Did your doctor test you for insulin resistance?

Best wishes.

I talked to a diabetic friend about something i read about lemons, cinnamon and some other ingredient that is supposed to lower your blood sugar. Most of that was fallacy. Aquave was recommended by a t.v. Doctor and a magazine came out and said that it isn't good for you. It raises your blood sugar. There was a study done on the above and it came out against most of the above ingredients.

One study negates another positive one. It is enough to drive one nuts. I do like lentils and eat them once in awhile.

I am doing well with the sugar problem. I am not having anything sweet such as pastry (occasionally would indulge), cookies, cake, no desserts of any kind.

If there is cereal with some sugar I am having some. If a cereal has 9 grams of sugar in it how does that translate into measurement? One teaspoonful?

I am very seriously cutting out junk food, sweets, pasta, and my favorite potatoes. I have lost 5 lbs. so far.
