I think I'd like to get in the habbit of doing that. And who knows maybe I might brush them more than 3 times a day but I'd be gentle. Probably wouldn't do it more than 3 times though.

Brush 'em as much as you like.  However, flossing once a day and brushing twice might be a better use of time.

well, i've heard one should brush their teeth after each meal & lots of people eat three times a day, so i don't think it'd be too much.....

No it is not too much.  You should try massaging your gums with your toothbrush as well as the brushing and flossing.

I brush and clean my tongue in the morning. I brush when I get home from work and brush, floss and clean my tongue before bed. I think that's rather normal. You can clean your mouth as often as you feel you need to but if your worried about a particular issue maybe a call to your dentist can help?

Years ago when I had to wear metal braces, I had to brush my teeth not only upon waking up and before going to bed, but every time I ate or drank anything with calories in it.  Yes, being a teenager, I switched to diet soda and diet gum so at least those times I wouldn't have to brush, lol.  I know not everyone wears braces and has to take those precautions...but...my family has loads of cavities...and I, at age 46, only have two fillings.  I think I finally have one or two more cavities...but one of them has been too tiny to drill since I was in 6th grade, and I keep waiting.

I've also used a mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide instead of ones with a lot of alcohol (dad used to make me use Lysterine <gags>).  There's a Dollar General brand I use now that I'm happy with, and it's cheap.  I've used straight bristled toothbrushes, not ones with wonky levels.  Soft bristled, not hard.  Toothpaste normal, not those ones that feel like I'm brushing my teeth with Ajax...I'd feel like I was scrubbing all the enamel off my teeth if I used tartar control toothpaste.  (I liked the kid's Sparkle Crest, lol, or Sensodyne type.)

I feel that brushing two times per day isn't enough, for me.  I've been lazy and only doing them twice lately. I need to put new batteries in my electric Pikachu toothbrush...I used to keep it in a pouch near my couch, along with dental flosser picks, and massage my gums with it as well as brushing my teeth for that extra, third time in a day brushing.

By the way, when I went on the Richard Simmons diet around 15 years ago...one of the requirements was to brush teeth after eating or drinking anything with calories.  I don't know if anyone who has stayed on his program for years has had any problems with their teeth or gums from too much brushing.

Edited to avoid double posting

I also brush my tongue when I'm finished brushing my teeth, but only once per day.  I started this as a teenager when I noticed my fingernail could scrape stuff off my tongue and it grossed me out, lol.

Yup, I actually do dip down and rub the gums too,  at the base of my lip instead of just the teeth:D

I just got back from the Dentist hehehe. They did a regular cleaning and then said come back for a deep cleaning, but then after the regular cleaning she did a real good job getting most the guck, and said if I brush and floss daily, then we can probably skip the deep clean with nova cane, and save me 260 dollars:)

I was so happy with how clean my teeth now were and so happy with the lil tube of toothpaste sent home, I brushed almost right away once  home lol.

I brush after every meal, every drink (cept water) & floss before bedtime.
Too much brushing can cause your gums to recede which will make them really sensitive and once the gums recede there's no fixing that. You'll have to live with the extra sensitive mouth.

maybemaybenot -> RE: Is brushing your teeth 3 times a day to much brushing? (4/29/2010 7:57:31 AM)

I brush my teeth three times a day, floss once a day and use a proxie brush once a day. I have dental cleaning done  4 x's a year. I have soft teeth and receeding gums, so I am very strict with my dental routinne. The dentist told me years ago I probably would need dentures by the time I was 45. I am now 52 and holding my own, a few root canals, crowns and bondings. And plenty of fillings, lol. I don't mind the idea of dentures, but would prefer to keep my own teeth as long as I can.

Why would it do that?:(

I wouldn't go over board but I think after breakfast, after lunch and after dinner wouldn't be to much.

I heard that you should brush your teeth after you eat, you should wait 1 hour after eating before you brush.

It cost me over $310.00 for my teeth to be cleaned and X rays... They want me to come in every three months. This is an out of pocket as I don't have Dental insurance.

Politesub53 -> RE: Is brushing your teeth 3 times a day to much brushing? (4/29/2010 4:42:21 PM)

Winterlight is correct. You shouldnt clean your teeth too soon after eating. Its to do with the mouth producing its own cleansing fluids, dont ask me what. As for cleaning, my dentist told me twice a day, no more and no less than two minutes a time. Dont brush so hard as to make your gums bleed every time either.

Two things. First of all eating the right foods should result in two things. Less acid formation in the mouth, thus less halitosis. Also a slower rate of tooth decay. That should mean that once a day should be enough. That does not mean you shouldn't brush more if you feel the need. Like taking a shower, you can do it as many times as you like, but you should only need to if you've been working out sweating or you have a peculiar medical condition. I know a Woman with such a condition, but haven't seen her lately. She is Black, of normal height and build, slightly overweight by by no means obese. From what I'm told she smells right out of the shower. But the fact is nothing comes out of the body that didn't go in. They call her Stinky, which I don't really like, but she takes no offense so why should I ? But I do not know her well enough to apprach her about this subject, IMO.

Second, multiple brushing shouldn't be a problem, even with the hardest brush available, which is what I use. I brush vigorously and only occasionally see a tiny bit of blood, but I enjoy an unusual level of dental health. Nonetheless I can only see one problem with brushing many times a day - exposure to toothpaste. It almost always has sugar in it, which to me seems to defeat the purpose. And the flouridated kind, well, my opinion on flouride is that it should be banned and there is plenty of research to back that up. One thing is for sure, when you brush I suggest you rinse thoroughly and get all it out of your mouth.

Actually a good test of dental health is to brush vigorously with a stiff toothbrush without toothpaste. Keep your mouth shut for a half an hour and breathe on someone. If you don't have bad breath at that time you are probably in pretty good shape. In the same way, taking multiple showers every day doesn't mean you need foot thick suds. You shouldn't need to.

Sure sugar rots your teeth, but it does it from the inside. In the same light, some people who eat alot of garlic might smell minutes after taking a shower. It is coming from the inside. And bad breath isn't always caused by bad teeth, some of the poisons in the body are expelled by the lungs, which means for some, that no amount of brushing will work.

That's my usual wierdo take on it.

Soft bristles and brush gently in circular motion. Although almost nobody can do that so it is recommended you buy an electric toothbrusth.

Too much and too vigourous and you lose dental enamel causing sensitivity.

Instead of thrice brushing, try twice and floss nightly. Flossing is of utmost importance to avoid gum disease. Or at least lessen it.

For the most part I am always gentle enough.  I also have medium to soft bristled brushes. Oh edited to add, normally I don't have bad breath, unless I just ate something that's got a strong odor :)

I hate flossing, maybe it's cause I don't do it very often, but when ever I do floss, it always makes my gums hurt for days and sometimes makes an abscess form. Even now, after a good cleaning,  flossing is still hurting my gums.

And no my gums are not currently not still sore from the cleaning just when I floss. And yes I am doing it the correct way the dentist showed me.

It only cost me 99 dollars, but it was a first time customer special. Normally it would of been almost 300. Somewhere in the 266 range. It's also out of my own pocket since I don't have insurance. I used to have Dentical, but that program was cut out. And then I wanted to go with Delta Dental, but they won't see you for up to a month after you fill out your paper work and sign up with them, and I couldn't wait a month.

"For the most part I am always gentle enough."

Not me. You are cleaning bones, and the enamel SHOULD be hard enough to take it. After all we are talking about a part of the body specifically desingned to chew up bits of food into smaller bit. If you afford teeth the proper nutrition, they should last forever.

Sure the wear down a bit, but are supposed to regrow. Mine did. I chipped a toothe decades ago and you would never know today. Teeth are supposed to be alive, and most people don't realize that.

This!  Two years ago I got the first cavity of my life, at 21.  I hate dentists, swore I'd never have to go through it again.  Brushed after I ate - anything.  Soda, coffee, snacks, meals...  I was brushing 5-6+ times a day to try to avoid plaque.
Receding gums are now my new friend, all because me and my medium bristled electric toothbrush went overboard and brushed "too hard" for an extended period of time.

Now in a yer or two I'm looking at having to have grafts done to "fix" my gums.  Cavities would have been soo much less trouble and a lot less complicated.  If  you're going to up your brushing, I seriously recommend you switch to a soft brush (well, really I suggest this either way).  Generally, we tend to use toothbrushes that are too hard to begin with.
