Termyn8or -> Beer substitute ? (5/4/2010 3:16:05 PM)

I like my beer. Many people don't saying it's pisswater or whatever, but I chose the brand and type for it's relatively low alcohol content. However I have to reconsider my position. The question of my sobriety has been brough up enough times that I would be a fool not to step back and try to see it as I like to look at many issues - objectively.

I want to put it to the test. There is a problem, in that I drink little of anything else other than beer. I'm quite sure I can say that it is not my aim to get drunk, there is whiskey right there in the fridge waiting, and it will continue to wait for some time. I've had ONE shot out of it since it's been here. However that doesn't mean the beer isn't affecting me, possibly more than I think. Health concerns also come to mind.

So at this point I am looking for something else because one has to drink something. If there was an effective way to remone all the alcohol from my beer I would go for it as long as it didn't wreck the taste. I have tried the near beers and they suck.

The problem is that there are so many exclusions it's not funny. I don't want anything sweetened, at least to any great degree. I avoid sugar, and will not touch anything with HFCS. That leaves out most soda. Bottles water might be good but might get boring, not that it isn't an option but I don't drink tap water, not in this city.

I am very open to nay help right now as to what to use to replace my beloved beer, at least for a time. I still assert that my aim is NOT to get drunk, but I must admit the possibilty that my judgement is affected and if so, at the very least I want to be aware of it. The only way to find out is to stop, voluntarily.

Be aware that what I seek is something that tastes half decent but is not sweet nor alcolohic. I do not need directions to the local AA meeting or anything of the sort. I just want to spend some time without alcohol so I know one way or the other, if my judgement is seriously affected by it. There are days when I only drink two with lunch and then perhaps three after work. That's all I want, and that might be the only thing I drink that day. Literally, just about anything else at the store I consider unnacceptable.

Will I give up beer completely, well maybe for a time, but forever, not likely. I see it in the same light as when I finally stopped drinking coffee. I liked it strong, milk but no sugar. Since I stopped I have a much steadier hand, which comes in "handy" at work. The beer, well if it has a significant negative impact on my well being I will stop, or cut way back on it. Even now, it's not like I won't touch a cup of coffee, but I no longer pound down three cups of that which others started calling "mud" every morning. I saw the negative effects the caffiene had on me, and stopped. I see this as the same.

So no caffiene and no sweeteners, what's left ? I would really like a viable alternative to beer. As far as soda, if forced I might go with 5050 or Cotton Club less sweet ginger ale, figuring even if they have sugar, they have less.

Maybe I just have to buy one of those water coolers. Make tea occasionally, because it is hard to find unsweetened. And I don't like weak tea or coffee, I am the type who calls such things "dishwater".

If you can see through a cup of coffee you might as well drink water. Maybe that's all that's left - water. Spring, well od distilled water. Now I hear distilled water is not all that good for you. I don't know if I believe that or not. That came directly from the mouth of a researcher at Case Wesern Reserve Universaity, now known simply as "Case". Supposedly something about the molecules, which is at this point beyond my comprehension because I thought that was what happened to water naturally. It evaporates from on and/or in the ground and gets into the air, then eventually it rains. That amount to distillation does it not ? Perhaps HK or someone could shed some light on that subject. Distillata is not all that expensive. What I heard could be hype or bad science.

What to drink - that is the question.

Make sun tea with your tea of choice - white, black, or green (depending upon how much caffeine you want - most tea has little caffeine anyway unless you drink a lot).  Get a large glass gallon container with a spout, fill it with filtered water, add 4 - 5 regular tea bags (or one "iced tea" size - check the box), cover, and place in the (warm) sun for  1 - 4 hours, depending upon how strong you want it (i do 4 hours of TX sun, so it can be strong [;)]).  Remove the tea bags and stick the whole thing in the fridge and voila, iced tea for days, no boiling water, and no sugar.  Plus it tastes fabulous.

i'm with you on the no HFCS drinks and no artificial sweeteners.  i cut all chemicals and processed foods out of my diet and i feel fabulous.  All i drink is unsweetened tea, wine, and water....every once in a while a Guinness when the mood strikes me.

eta a couple things:  You can also make sun tea in the fridge - just add the bags and steep in the fridge overnight instead of in the sun.  Also make sure you clean everything very well in between brews - soak your jar and spigot in bleach water - as bacteria can grow since you're not boiling the water.  If this is a worry just boil the water for 3 - 5 minutes and make the whole thing in the jar without the sun.  YMMV.  [;)]

Good luck!  [:)]

The teas on sale in the US are as bad examples of tea as your beloved Budweiser is of beer; weak, tasteless, pointless.

See if you cant get some proper tea - the sort sold in the UK ("Yorkshire Tea" is the best IMO). Despite the caffeine being equal to coffee in pound for pound basis, its much less per cup.

i agree, in the States go for Artisan teas (like Mighty Leaf - available in the specialty tea section usually).

Also lately i've been using PG Tips to make my iced tea (it's the taste!) - which is nice.  [:)]

I would say drink the good beer too...drinking bad beer has so many impurities it leaves you feeling yucky the next morning...like bad tequila only the good stuff is worth it...Now I read all the  other messages...I think he drinks beer for the high so tea isn't gonna do it.. If he has a problem with alcohol he will just have to go thru the withdrawals and switch to something better for him..I pretty much drink only water much of the time but when I drink wine I like my pinot grigio!

~Fast Reply~

Why don't you just brew your own so you can have it exactly as you want? Go into any home-brew shop and they will also have information on how to brew sodas, which you can make with or without X, Y and Z as it pleases you.

Termie:
I have been making clean water for the past twenty five years with mechanical filters that will take it down to a half micron. Which is smaller than the giardia cist that gives you the trots in mexico.
If you want the specs, costs and where to buy them give me a shout on cmail.

Edited to add:

Ohhh... I forgot to add that it is definitely dark, too.

Twining's is my favorite. Earl Grey, Prince of Whales or Irish Breakfast. Just make sure you don't boil the water[:)]

Neither is motor oil, but would you drink it, and if you did, would you be able to tell the difference.

My favourite teas are from Meßmer Tee
http://www.messmer.de/en/produkte/start/index.html

They have black, green, herbal, fruit and teas that energise, purify, detox, relax, etc.

They also have a whole section on the benefits of tea:

Its one thing to insult our tea, but it is another to insult our King of beer.  I for one will stand for no part of it.  When the Brits can make something as good as Jack Daniel's then you can criticize.

DesFIP -> RE: Beer substitute ? (5/4/2010 5:58:58 PM)

Tonic water. Not sweet, has an astringent taste and is bubbled.

Term, one can/bottle of beer has the same amount of alcohol as one shot of whiskey or one glass of wine. So if you drink six beers you are drinking the same amount of alcohol as six whiskeys. You don't compare ounce to ounce but serving size to serving size.

Oh and Ellen, unless you've tried every tea available here, you shouldn't generalize like that. Local tea company here, http://www.ghfordtea.com/store/

I know this was meant as humour from you :-) But actually, just to clarify, he asked for a non-alcoholic beverage other than water. Juice is high in sugar, even the natural stuff, and should be limited. Sodas are high in sodium which in high quantities is not good.

I love Belgian White Beer, Indian Pale Ales, Irish Cream Ales and Dry Stouts, German Lagers and Pilseners. But I like them on occasion like a Dry Vodka Martini, a good single malt scotch, fine wine, port & sherry, cognac, etc as well as pure fruit juices, carbonated mineral water and coffee.

Plain filtered water and herbal or fruit teas are the two things I allow myself to drink as much as I want of.
