sirsholly -> Head injury (5/11/2010 9:02:43 AM)

As a lot already know, i fell down a flight of stairs on April 21st and did a bit of damage. The official diagnosis was a moderate concussion (the catagories told to me were mild, moderate, moderate/severe and severe) and a subarachnoid hemorrhage which is bleeding on the surface of the brain. A CT scan the next day showed the bleeding had stopped.

That said, i have a few questions and i was hoping others might share their experiences. I know everyone is different (that is the standard answer i get from the Neurologist) but i have never dealt with a head injury before and do not know what to expect. Any info will be appriciated.

-Headaches...i have had one since this happened, and it gets a little worse as the day goes on. So far there is no medication (from Tylenol to Vicodin here, and Morphine in the hospital) that has helped. Any advice?

-Dizziness...This is really annoying, as there is no rhyme or reason for when it occurs (it happens when sitting still and relaxed, moving around, etc.). Does anyone have any experience on how long it continues? My drivers license has been revoked by the doctors for now, but the thought of driving and getting hit with the dizzies is pretty scary.

-Short term memory loss. I have a new appreciation for sticky notes and would be lost without them. It has eased a bit from the date of the accident, but how long can this last?

-Blurred vision. It is periodic, perhaps several times per day, and no reason for when it will occur. There is no double vision...just fuzzy (to the point i cannot read). Things do become a bit clearer if i close one eye (either one).

There is a Neurologist involved and he says all this is typical for a head trauma case. What he can't tell me, understandably, is how long these symptoms generally last. Therefore i am hoping anyone who has had a head injury can tell me their experiences?

Thanks so much!!!

how about taste and smell?

My little brother had about the same, cracked skull and all and the headaches (he had migranes before the accident) near as we can tell went away somewhere in the 6-9 month range, his taste has never come back quite right after 2 years.

Dizziness went away around 3 months.

Short term memory loss was around 2-3 months.

The cracked skull thingie seemed to be about well on its way to half or over before he really noticed an improvement in his symptoms.

That's what I got, YMMV.

I have to say Ouch!

For headaches have you tried Advil or Ibuprofen? Tylenol and Aspirin have never worked on me. You should ask your doctor first as Advil does thin the blood and increase the chance of bleeding. Not sure how bad your fall was. If your fall caused internal bleeding the doctor may not want you to have advil.

The other question I would ask the doctor is if the symtoms your are experiencing are caused by swelling/inflamation< If so an anti-inflammitory may help. Pain killers like Vicodin and Morphine do little to subdue pain caused by imflamation.

Get well soon!

Taking a hit to the head takes time and your symptoms vary depending on where you got hit and where the damage was. For instance, if you have a wiplash type head injury the most damage may be on the other side of where you were hit due to your brain jarring against the other side of your skull. My ex got hit in the front and his personality went from being pretty mild to beatingt the crap out of me. Just know it's a healing process and the brain takes it's time. If your doctor says your ok and healing then that is likely whats going on. Find a medicine that helps your pain and relax as best you can. If the doctor is reluctant to perscribe a medication that relieves you don't hesitate to seek another doctor. Pain is not something you should have to put up with in light of all the other challenges you have right now.

Big Huggs and I hope your better soon!

Headaches from an injury can also be caused by muscle strain. A muscle relaxer may help.
Sometimes soaking lying flat and immersed in water as hot as you can stand can help. I actually found this worked better than anything else for me. Not sure why.
A 'cocktail' of aspirin, caffeine and tylenol helped. However, that would require approval from your neurologist as aspirin thins the blood.

I suffered a severe head injury with antegrade and retrograde amnesia when I was hit head-on by a drunk driver. I never did regain many of my memories. Mine start at about 13 years old and a lot of holes even after that. I wouldn'[t worry about that. No sense buying trouble. The short-term memory loss I experienced, did get better. For a while I waas doing things like leaving my keys in the fridge, hanging my purse up in the closet and forgetting to button my shirts. Things like that. Turned out they were small seizures. It got better! Yours will too!

Ron, no issue with taste and smells at all...and the smell part is important, as i do not remember putting things on the stove [8|]

2-3 months i would be able to deal with. I am glad your brother is ok[:)]

Thanks Mummy (that makes me sound like a two yr old!) I am banned from all blood thinners of any type because of the bleeding on the brain and a transfusion (i lost a lot of blood). There was/is a lot of swelling and bruising in the brain, but not as much as their could have been. I was very lucky.[:)]

Wow...i am so sorry that happened to you. How frightening for one so young to go through that.

And i am doing the silly things too! It might sound strange, but finding my purse in the fridge and things such as that give me the giggles and make it a little better.[:)]

One very important word of warning:
I had a head injury due to an assault, broken jaw, smash larynix (sp?) and was given vicodin, which apparently VERY addicting, i had to be weened off of it and the docs used codine. this i was allergic to in some sort of intestinal way and suffered SEVERE vomiting- while my mouth was wired shut! i also had some sub dermal swelling- not crainial, but i had memory loss that lasted about 5 months.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU HOLLY AND HEAL FAST!
nuthin but the best from the other Holly

Thanks Holly. It sounds like you had an awful time..especially the vomiting with a wired jaw. I am surprised you didn't choke.[:(]

hlen5 -> RE: Head injury (5/11/2010 2:48:39 PM)

I have no experience with head injuries (despite the evidence of some of my odder posts!!). The only thing I have to contribute is I hope your symptoms fade very quickly, Holly!

An aside, Redwood Girl I LOVE your pic (avatar?) and am memorizing it to tell someone else who would appreciate it,too!

DesFIP -> RE: Head injury (5/11/2010 6:24:06 PM)

No experience with head injuries however if you're on codeine, that could explain the dizziness. It's a well known side effect.

thatsub -> RE: Head injury (5/12/2010 9:02:28 AM)

I had some concussions, but luckily none were that severe and there were no severe and/or long term effects. Remember being in a hospital for a week with nausea, blurred vision, and a headache, all of which went away after a day or two.

I only witnessed short term memory loss when my friend had a snowboarding accident. He lost his short term memory and could not remember anything for more than 3-5 minutes. He recovered after 1 day, but still does not remember anything from the day of the accident and the day before that. Other than that he suffered no long term effects, as far as I know.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Head injury (5/12/2010 9:08:33 AM)

Hols, I have that lovely middle ear thing dizziness, and antivert helps. Ask for some, you never know. The other symptoms should fade with time. Try talking your way through everying more than once, there is a process where things go from short term to long term, and These Things Take Time.

Do NOT ask the LO where you left anything! [:D]

blueeyedbbwsub -> RE: Head injury (5/12/2010 9:31:04 AM)

Holly,

I've had a couple of mild concussions. This is when I found out that putting a klutz on a pair of rollerskates is NOT a good thing. That and the fact that I don't have the damn sense to put my hands in front of me when I fall. I've found with headaches that an ice pack helps a lot. No longer than 15-20 minutes at a time. A bag of frozen vegetables can also serve the purpose. I keep about 5 soft packs in the freezer and wrap one in a dish cloth when needed. A towel is too thick and won't let the cold seep through. My mom always warned me that I'd freeze my brain one day, but I don't think that's happened yet. At least I don't remember if it has or not. [&:]

As for the dizziness, I rely mostly on dramamine. I suffer from middle and inner ear infections all the time and this does seem to be of some help.

Hope you feel better soon and good luck.
