MissAsylum -> Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 8:53:43 PM)

this forum was of super great help to me whn it came to my closet space issues- now, i must call on your help again. i'm trying to have my room go by a nice french boudoir type of feel, and i've settled on the color palette of teal, black, and white, with cherry wood furniture. i' having trouble with my walls- i have NO FREAKING CLUE what to do with them. i want to paint them- but i'm very hesitant. i have no desire to paint any other room in my house so if i were to decided to sell my house, it might upset potential buyers. i thought about wallpaper- but i have no clue what type of print(french boudoir inspired) to choose. typing in "french boudoir" and 800 related terms into google or bing(bleh) is less than helpful, so could anybody here possibly give me any ideas?

DarlingSavage -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 9:02:15 PM)

Paint them, you'll love it and so will potential buyers.  I love painted walls!

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 9:08:22 PM)

Have you considered painting with a faux finish? There are tons of different styles you could use, and it's really not that hard if you're detail-oriented. And if you screw it up, you can just paint over it and give it another try! I did it in my living room a few years ago, which was an extremely unusual thing for me to do, and it turned out fantastic.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 9:10:25 PM)

a teal wallpaper with gold or silver fleur di lis would be appropriate. Sounds gaudy but can you can find a pattern that complements the rest of your decor (as you've described it.)

DarlingSavage -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 9:12:10 PM)

I DO like the fleur de lis idea, but not with silver or gold, I think perhaps with flat colors.  Perhaps a very dark grey on the teal?  Or charcoal grey on teal.  Or the other way around.

LanceHughes -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 9:19:36 PM)

WHOA!  Why not contact your local gay friend?

What?  You are NOT a fag-hag?

I think your problem stems from trying to make the style match the palette instead of the other way round.

Let's see..... french boudoir ---> cherry furniture = I don't think so.  Where did the teal, black, white come from anyway?  Already you have FOUR colors going on.

Just how red is the cherry wood?  What is the style of the furniture?

P.S. I agree one one thing..... bing = bleah!  LOL!

lucylucy -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 9:34:26 PM)

Have you thought about using fabric on the walls? You could hang rich-looking curtains from the top of the wall or you can actually staple or nail fabric to the walls.

Ahhh, screw it.... NO black!  Walls are a "dusty blue"  Wood is done white w/ gold trim.

But, sure - use fabric to your heart's content.  I'm thinking pantaloons for dresser if yours has "wrong" legs.  Certainly the canopy over the bed is a possiblity.  Nuthin' says "french boduoir" like a canopy. LOL!

You need to stick with pastels.

reynardfox -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 10:30:05 PM)

Potential buyers be damned, you are talking about what you want here, and with the property market so far underwater in most places it looks like Atlantis why be worried about that? Why not a French inspired mural? Your local art college would be a good place to find a penniless artist, or you could ise a projector to put a series of images on the wall for a painter to follow.
We had a large apartment when we were first married and we had all the walls painted with murals with Indian designs, the place was snapped up in no time when we needed to move, and our second home had the first floor landing painted with tromp l'ois, I think it is called, never could spell in french, which is deceptive art where doors look like paths in a garden and you are really caught up in the images, the impression was that you were in a crossroads in a massive formal garden from hundreds of years ago and it really worked, again, that sold to the first  person who looked the place over. That was also done by a broke art student, but he was a genius.
Right now we are in a total Gothic Victorian Steampunk extravaganza, with a Venetian bedroom in purple suede with a gilt baroque bed, a madly oversized three mirror dressing table and gilt inlaid wardrobes, all made from charity shop purchases, and enormous gilt mirrors with a chandelier and throws of fake fur and drapes from intricate saris that cost buttons but look amazing.
The hall and landing and stairs are in explosive vivid orange, which automatically make you think of sunrise when you get up and in grey England, you need that in the winter. The walls are lined with dozens of barometers bought form junk shops, which look astonishing and all work, but they do not necessarily agree.
I have a soft ice cream pink parlour with edwardian pink sofa and matching chair that doubles as Master's study. A dazzling buttercup yellow living room where we have our gallery and where we keep the TV. A very soft pastel pink drawing room which houses all my old chiming clocks and the piano, a shocking pink downstairs wetroom with a vast arts and crafts three mirror dressing table. A jade green kitchen decorated with Victorian circus memorabilia and circus of horrors posters from every tour. We have a black bathroom.  I have just spent a fortune creating a walled off terraced garden fileld with night flowering plants for outdoor play where no one can see in. I light that with lanterns and it's all as sexy as hell.
As you can guess, I'm not selling this place, not ever, but tell you what, I bet I could.

Lockit -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/1/2010 11:45:43 PM)

Try HGTV and look around to see a style that you like. Look into Rate This Space. There are pictures or styles of people doing their own thing. Or just google home design. I think you are trying to blend two different styles and that is an art. So far I think Lance has the closest idea of french design with the painted furniture with a touch of gold.

Also Panda has a good idea with the faux paint... look into wall stencil painting that might not hurt you in a resale if you go with the right colors and both colors not too far from one another. You can add a bit of gloss to the stenciled part that makes it shine a bit and stand out. I would use a whole wall like it was wall paper, but not the whole room. People looking to buy, that see wall paper, typically cringe. Lots of work and can produce some allergens for some people. As long as you don't do the stencil with thick paint, it isn't a problem to paint over. The two color's close together are a faint pattern that adds interest without being too far out there. If you do stripes and tape it off, be very careful and find some good instructions because they can turn into a nightmare if you get the paint too thick at the edges or the wall is textured and repainting is a bitch. And good tape is a must. Don't short cut with the tape.

Maybe cover one wall with draped cloth over the head of the bed if you can't do a canopy. You could put your stripes there with the material or curtains.

But really, go look around, you might find you want something very different than you think. I often have found one object that I design a room around. Whether it is cloth or an item or a color... it flows from there. Don't go too different from the rest of the house, especially if area's blend or you can see them clearly from other area's.

Take your time, think on it, take some more time, look around, think on it. Get some colors whether material or splashes of the color on the wall near one another (small samples or cans of paint) and look at them in the room at different times of day with different lighting to see if you really can live with them.

Remember... have fun and there are no mistakes you can't make work for you or change.

DesFIP -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/2/2010 4:54:10 AM)

Paint them. It's easy to paint over them if you decide to sell. But if you aren't actively seeking to sell the house, then you don't need to stage it now.

You want lamps with crystal drops. Lots of luxurious fabrics. Satins and silks. Have the curtains puddle on the floor. Gold colored outlet covers.

MissAsylum -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/2/2010 5:22:25 AM)

this was a great way to wake up- tons of great ideas.

DarlingSavage, reynardfox: my fear of paint comes from this one episode on TLC about reselling houses- there was an amazing piece painted on the wall(not distrubing in any way) that was done in such vivid colors and it truely was breath taking. HOWEVER, the real estate "experts" told the current owners to paint over the wall with a soft white or put up neutral wallpaper. Being an art major(funny isnt it?) i personally would just die a bit inside if i bought the house and they former owners told me what used to be there to be painted over in eggshell. so i supposed i will give more thought into painting.

ThatDamnedPanda i actually have thought about a faux finish. I was thinking a really vibrant turquoise with a gold sponged over it to tone it down. i would have done silver if i had chose black furniture. I am terrified of the screw up thing, but you are right- i can just paint over it. I just have a slight OCD when it comes to my art work(my concentration is in paint, again- funny isnt it?) and i'll loose my mind if it doesn't come out the way i feel is right. I'm not a "happy mistakes" person when it comes to paint.

xxblushesxx if i so decide to go with wallpaper- i think i will look for something along the lines that you suggested. it sounds lovely.

LanceHughes i know! i have gay male friends, but they arent into home design crap. i swear...what freaking good are they....? but i had the style picked out a looooong time ago and the colors are what i had to mull over for a year. the black and white would be the main colors, the teal is just the accent. and i chose cherry wood because 1- i already have two very nice pieces of solid cherry wood furnitutre that i lucked out and picked up at a goodwill when i went to donate clothes. they were 8 and 10 dollars each. for real cherry wood, i'd be crazy to pass that up.and 2- i don't want my room to look like a Tiffany's box, which is what i think would happen with balck furniture. love the jewlery, but not for my room. And i'm off-put by pastels. They don't calm me- they make me feel cold. And they make me think of babies. As if condoms didn't already kill they joy of sex for me lol.

lucylucy i love the idea of drapped fabric, but 2 words keep popping into my mind: fire hazard. it just freaks me out.

Lockit thanks soooo much for the diy advice. my boyfriend is pretty useless in that area[8|]. And HGTV didn't reall pop into my mind, so that you for that. i'll have to check out their website though, DirectTV took the channel away from me after i had for like a year and said i needed to upgrade my package to get it(and 6 of my other favourite channels) back for an additional 50 dollars a month[>:]. Yeah- no way in hell.

DesFIP Thanks for the lamp suggestion- i was just getting a few lamps from target. That wouldn't work now that i think about it. And the outlet cover- i probably will do them in gold now that you mention it. Do you think having the hardware (door nobs, drawer pulls...etc) done in crystal and gold would be a good idea?

THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE AND TIPS EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!

Paint cherrywood?

NO

NO

NO!

Yes to hardware. Luxury is the theme of the day.

Those "experts" should be SHOT!  Is this the degree to which the US population has been affected by loss of culture that so many are incapable of appreciating art?  That work should have probably raised the value of the house, not brought it down!  That's just crazy!

Okay...... couple of follow-up notes..... above, when I typed "screw it" I meant that I couldn't figure out how to post the image..... CLICK on the image to see what I meant by "white furniture, gold trim."

pahunkboy: I was NOT suggesting that the OP paint her furniture.  I totally agree that that is wrong on many levels.

I was saying that the image shows a "french boudoir" inspired room with "dusky blue walls" - and very few pastels.

So, what we need is something a little more modern, a little more sleek, a sexy-as-all-hell boudoir.  In my view, the French do not have an exclusive on the word boudoir.

Basis: Cherry furniture, two pieces.  Probably both chests, but we don't know.
Main colors: Black & white. Accent color: teal
Theme: Josephine Baker - google her and you'll "get it."  Miss Baker was about as French as you can get.

Miss Baker was BIG  in the opening of the Jazz era, so we'll use those black and whites to suggest a "piano" which of course, could've been made of high-gloss cherry wood.   Her act was jungle oriented, so the accents are pillows, piled high with big flowers in teal and a not-so-blue green for foliage.  Some solids in in the blue/green range.

I'm going for matte-white walls with diagonal black-hi-gloss thin stripes, almost like a music score.  And here's the beatuy of this idea - we're NOT gonna paint those stripes on - we're going to use electrician's tape.  Diagonal is NOT 45 degrees, but more.... whatever works in the room.  How 'bout first stripe is corner to corner on each wall, and go from there?   Leave maybe 3 or 4 inches between, two stripes on each side for a total of 5 stripes.  Then skip.... what? maybe 10 inches, then start another set of 5 stripes.  Removal? Solved!!!

Do ONLY two adjoining walls, including the head-board wall.  Drape as in the image above. Get a ring and just run a needle and thread through your fabric round and round two-or-three times, follwing the ring, making a hem. Fabric?  CAREFUL - there's gonna be a lot of it.  Maybe a jungle print (dare I say zebra - nah - too cliche) on silky nylon/rayon.  Teal/black/white stripes?  In any instance, you want the fabric lightweight so it doesn't pull down your ring.  Paint a thrift head-board black gloss and pick out details in "cover-all" gloss white.  If there's a matching foot-board, even better.

Dramatic lighting?  Those black torchieres that were so popular 20 years ago.  BUT put 'em on dimmers.  Formal, formal - one on each side of the bed.

Chests go one on decorated wall, one plain white wall.

Oh, just had a thought..... Door gets the stripes - so that when it's closed, it is camoflauged into wall.

If you want further help, I need floor plan and height.  Location of outlets, etc.

Hope that your "Josephine Baker" research helps you decide to get into 20th Century, as opposed to being Louis XIV.  LOL!  The French have been sexy in their boudoirs for more years than........ (I got nuthin')

LanceHughes -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/2/2010 7:05:01 PM)

On re-read: Some red in the pillows to reference the cherry wood.  I'm thinking red hibicus, teal leaves.  Some solid teal pillows.

Oh, damn!  If you can find it - a teal center stripe for each musical score would work.

There are GREAT posters of JB.... get a repro.  Real things are in thousands of dollars.

Josephine Baker liked the black/white theme, too, but she used those as accents, to her main color - (don't gag1) banana yellow.

Here's a GREAT repro poster of Jsephine for $14.85 .....

http://www.amazon.com/JOSEPHINE-JOHANN-STRAUSS-THEATER-VINTAGE/dp/B001Q8DEJ4

HMmmmm those red feathers sure do match cherry wood, don't they?

Maybe that teal color idea can be given up.   ONE main color, not your two - black and white.  ONE secondary - and then one accent.  Your cherrywood is a fourth color and you "really" should have only three.

How 'bout "Tribute to Josephine Baker" ? based on a poster that really moves you?

Gotta go.
Regards, Lance

GreedyTop -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/2/2010 7:19:57 PM)

Lance?  come help me decorate/dress... *adores you*  LOL

MissAsylum -> RE: Still decorating...more help is needed. (6/3/2010 3:22:33 AM)

wow.

that was a lot to take in. maybe what i'm putting together in my mind just looks extremely busy- and i wouldnt want that for my bedroom where i'm going to relax.

but i must admit- i like the whole painting the door the same color(s) of the walls.

and i'm a bit lost on the "must be 3 colors" thing. i could have sworn that natural wood is a neutral and doesn't really "count" in the colour palette.

could be wrong. if that be the case- my mom has been breaking the laws of home decor since i was a baby. her room is royal blue and gold with mohagany furniture- BUT there is a major piece of furniture in her room that is also wood, but its a light honey shade.

and as far as the pieces i have goes- one is a nightstand and the other is a "tv" stand(i'm sure it wasnt meant to be one lol) that probably is a end table since its not very long like a coffee table and too big to be a nightstand. Also i had recieved a standing mirror yesterday(gift) in cherry wood- here is something that look similar to it(mine is real cherry wood):

http://www.amazon.com/Southwestern-Carved-Cherry-Finish-Cheval/dp/B0002KNN8O/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3BRB4FT6YAOIJ&colid=A986X4SHJJ3U

also, i'm buying a chest of drawers(tall) and a vanity, also in cherry wood.

again- this me still being certain that wood is a nuetral.
