I recently discovered Bill Maher and I think he's pretty funny. A good and creative comedian who seems to like to push the envelope. What's wrong with that?
If he "likes" Obama that's his business.

I do not know you. I don't know if you are a racists or not. But I do know that the belief that white people are not human is a racist belief. If you agree with that then you have a racist belief. That does not necessarily mean you are a racist. but that belief is a racist belief. Now most (if not all) people have SOME racist beliefs. I commented that it was RARE to meet someone with racist beliefs against their own race. But that does not make you a racist. I cannot judge that because I do not know you. I judged your belief in the Rev. Farrakhans teachings as being racists beliefs.

It is seldom that popeye and I agree. This is one of those times. There have been two other just recently.
This sort of thing usually happens when hell freezes over thus my reference to his keeping his snow shovel handy.

I do not know you. I don't know if you are a racists or not. But I do know that the belief that white people are not human is a racist belief.

The context of the "white people not being fully evolved" speech spoke to those who act in an uncivilized way and those who condone it by their silence. That is hardly racists.

If you agree with that then you have a racist belief. That does not necessarily mean you are a racist. but that belief is a racist belief.

Pointing our facts does not a racists make one.

Now most (if not all) people have SOME racist beliefs.

I believe you are on pretty solid ground here.

I do not believe farakhan is a racist any more than I think jerimiah wright is a racists. There are some on this board who think the naacp and martin king were racists. They are wrong.
I am not convnced that farakhans conclusions and solutions are either pragmatic or possible but it is pretty difficult to fault his facts.

I thought the topic was bill maher comment and whether it was racist or not and the ramifications there of....did I miss something when I agreed with popeye that it was funny?

OK. you believe what you choose and I will believe what I choose, and it doesn't mean either of us is wrong or right. The beauty of living in America is that we are free to disagree and to explore whatever it is we believe. Thank you for an intelligent exchange of ideas.

It is hard to follow any semblance of conversation with all the slug fest here.

Every other post is a slug fest.

So is slug fest racist?   No- but it is boorish.

Republicans prove over, and over, that folks can vote against their interests.

Perhaps it isn't that they are voting against their interest.  Perhaps they simply disagree with you about what their interest actually are.

Firm

Considering their stated interests and what they end up supporting I think it is a fair assessment that the two do not match.

Racist? Without a doubt...also funny.

The other thing I find sort of funny is the way my fellow lefties are making excuses...its a racist joke, and a pretty funny one at that.

Should he apologise? Not on your life...he's a comedian, he's in the business of making jokes, he should just let it stand.

Exactly.

It's totally playing on racial stereotypes - that "real" black men have guns and ignorantly carry them around in the waistband of their pants. At the same time it's a joke. I don't think it's a particularly funny joke but humor is subjective, and maybe if I'd heard the delivery I'd have laughed.

I also don't care if comedians make non-PC jokes. I really don't care if most people make non-PC jokes, if it bothers me I'll say "fuck off I'm done with this conversation" not "you shouldn't say that! how dare you say that!" because I don't think it's my place to tell someone what they should "dare" to say.

I do find the double standards pretty funny though, especially with the number of anti-racism threads we've had recently, it seems the moral of the story is that racial jokes and racial stereotypes are only wrong when the other side does it.

That being said I think it's kind of cool that the majority of forum users who are normally oversensitive about race think it's cool to use the black-man-as-gangster stereotype on the POTUS as a joke. It was hard to laugh at the Cheney-shooting-people jokes because, you know, he actually did shoot someone and I feel bad for that guy, but I see potential in Obama-shooting-people jokes. He's no Putin but there has to be some innate gangsta mentality in there. You know, because he's black. Can I say that word out loud? Black?

So, are you saying that they are dumb, or gullible or both?

And you know this because you are so much smarter and wiser in the way of the world, I suppose?

Look at the from the other (correct) end of the telescope.  If  you can't see how their "stated interest" and actions match, perhaps it is you who has the problem, and not them?

No, I know this because we have people supporting issues they have no stake in.

How many times on here have you seen people advocating a repeal of the estate tax?

How many of these people will actually benefit from it?

Dumb?  Gullible?  I don't know.  How would you explain it?

Do they not understand that the the repeal of the estate tax will have to mean that the shortfall in government revenue has to be made up in increased taxes somewhere?

So yes, i think it is both dumb and gullible to let multi-millionaire inheritors off the hook for taxes so you have the privilege of subsidizing their lifestyle.

I think it sounds funny and I like funny. We are so rigid and uptight about who says what where to whom. People speaking their minds more directly would be a whole lot better than all the hidden agendas going on right left and center.

Half the time the folks apparently saying the 'right thing' are so full of shit it is wafting off of them in stinky vapors and yet no one can poke a stick because it is said correctly, politely. This society is so full of lies and false presentation. We read the clues, we pretend, and we all get sick and die from the deception we feed to each other and ourselves.

Bring it on, I say. Be real for a change. I am tired of all the so-called courtesy, there is often absolutely nothing genuine behind it.

Wonderful post, hc.

Rich, I don't really think it's racist, as I don't think Maher is one (he IS a dick though, albeit funny).

Thanks, Arpig. I haven't finished reading all the rationalizations, denials, and attempts to make this a conversation about Republicans (funny so far, though!), but it's nice to see someone can call it.
