i agree. Tipping is a matter for the individual concerned but those who dont tip are not mean shits. The really mean shits are the employers and companies who have landed them in the shit in the first place letting many people go when they could still afford to keep them thus worsenin g the economy for everyone. And why? Because their profit are slightly down. Well boo hoo , get with the programme and adjust. The world has changed , deal with it. But not at the expense of staff

How in the world does the server get shit on because your soda sucked? Why would you have them pay 8% on your sugary soda?

As for self serve places, those are called fast food restaurants, and Hometown Buffet is not generally regarded as a tipping establishment (notice they have no "tip" section on the credit card receipt)...

It sounds like your idea of an evening out is McDonalds, and again, you are not required to tip in these establishments...

In California there are many worthwhile eateries, but you have to be willing to pay for good food quality, no matter where you live.

A tip is "required"? Then add it on from the start. Why play games?

I do not eat at Mcdonalds- their meat is dog food cutter canner.

A gratuity is "required"?

Maybe the employer should be the help a fair wage so that the help does not have to pan handle.

and another thing- wait staff is pestery when trying to have a conversation to see if everything is ok. plates leave before the food is finished- over priced deserts are pushed- the silverware has spots on it- the ice machine has not been cleaned since 1972. and the loudness of the music or banging in the kitchen it not yay-- add in the poor seating - and you have basically a cow troff.

Actually in most all restraunts it makes it clear that they automatically add tax on orders over $150.00 or parties of 6 or more.

As I understand it unless stated directly on the menu, tipping is not REQUIRED in any establishment.

First, did you mean "tip" or "tax"

Secondly, Sinergy and I would eat at establishments where our bill exceeded 150 buck often (put mixed drinks or a decent bottle of wine on a tab and it does not take long) and the establishments never added a tip to the bill...

Where I worked it was usually under the discretion of the server and we got clearance from the manager to add tips to the bill.... the menu had a small disclaimer at one place that I worked that a gratuity maybe added under certain circumstances, or the manager would inform the party that their tip was included in the bill... it all depends on the restaurant, they all have differing policies

But the above aside, what did this have to do with my post?

1-I tip extremely well. If I go below 20%, there is at least a 50/50 chance I will be stiffing the server and talking to a manager.
2-Don't take autogratuities personally. You're not that fucking important. An autograt has nothing to do with you or any comments on your possible fitness as a tipper, it's designed to keep servers from getting fucked. It's that simple. No need to get panties all bunched up about it...unless you are a cheap fuck.
3-This is just an observation, but it occurs to me that people who always get bad service, create their own bad service.
4-Tazzy's tale of corporate restaurant abuse re recooks, free food, comps etc...is all too common in the hospitality industry
5-And yeah, I think tipping says something about character. Wanna know what I hate. It's going out with a group and some cheap cocksucker shorts the bill and goes light on the tip, sticking the rest of the party with his share of the bill.

Good for you! I am all for living out your beliefs! At the same time, advocating the stiffing of servers tends to be a cheapskate position and one that I will respond to...

Serving is the toughest job I have ever had, and I have been everything from a dishwasher to a maid, and now I have a vocation... it is 1000 times harder than spreadsheets...lol

Not so. They have absolute control over their attitude, their helpful ness, their friendliness, their demeanor, whether they make you feel welcome or not, ect ect.

I have been in some places, where the waitress acted like she couldn't care less to wait on you, it was just her job, she was abrupt, she was not very friendly, She was pretty cold and impersonal she did not make me, or my Daddy feel very welcome,and the place was empty mostly, and she did not wait on us very much. I'd say more often than not my glass was empty or completely empty, a lot of the time before she came by.

I value waiters that make you feel welcome, and they make you feel like you're a valuable customer. I am very friendly and you don';t have to sit down and tell me your whole life story, or anything like that, but some light banter and a little report building makes me want to open the wallet to tip that expensive tip. And good service will make me have warm and fuzzy memories of how good it was to be at that place, and I'll go there above anything else 99.99999 percent of the time.

So it actually behooves a wait person to be friendly, be engaging, and make a person feel welcome, and perhaps a bit like they are seeing an old friend.
They may not be able to help if the food sucks, or is cold, or other things, but they certainly are responsible for more than just filling your drinks.

There's one place here in town called Woodies, I have been a fan of them for a long time, however one day we had our dog with us, not expecting to want to eat out. I asked the manager, could I tie Ginger to the fence, on the outside patio, OFF the dining platform, but still next to me He said yes. There was absolutely no reason for him to say yes, but he didn't have a problem w/ith it. That to me just cemented them as eating place uno number one, when I am in that area.

The server even brought out a little styrofoam take out plate, when I asked her if there was any way we could provide water for our dog.

I was so happy with the dining experience, and proud of how well it went over, since this was an un tried first time ever experince, I went to the front desk, told them I'd like to praise the manager, may I speak to the manager please, and I shook his hand and let him know just how welcome I felt at the place and how happy I am to be a customer there.

We're at Woodies just about twice a month, We're well known, the servers like us there, and always come by to say hi, or I say hi to them, and they always smile and say hey how ya been, This type of very friendly and welcoming environment, along with good food, keeps me coming back time, after time, after time.

Basically dont drink soda it is no good for you.

If you are a cheap guest , you are cheap and crying from the mountain tops wont make that less evident.

You can tell an awful lot about a person by the way they behave in restaurants, how they treat the staff and how they pay their bill.

If you hate service people it is fairly evident even if the server doesnt fall for your crap and gives you good service anyway.

Cheap people are cheap people and all sorts of others suffer at the hands of their cheapness all over the place not only in the restaurant experience. Even by feeling like your eyes are being scratched by reading the things they post in a thread about tipping.

You sort of glow you cheap patrons and the color is none too pretty.

They actually do have this for you lame asses out there with those new gadgets you bring to the table for debit and credit card. On the left it says 15% and on the right it says other. You could be one of the ones to puch the 15% button. It is fine if you do but not very creative, and sometimes signals someone who cannot think for themselves or is cheap. There ya go! What I found when I was a server is that the people who were the cheapest tippers were usually the most demanding of customers, making tons of special requests, running a server repeatedly for odd things (like wanting a certain type of glass, or asking for a an usual condiment, and asking for things in repeated special trips). The cheap people are usually the rudest people. They monopolize your time so that the service you want to provide others suffers because of these demanding assholes... and then they leave a fucked up tip. It is as if they are looking for a reason to be a cheap asshat

When you are a server things work in a domino effect...

One table can literally screw up a large portion of your shift because they get you out of sync and you spend a few hours trying to catch up. It is a hard thing to understand unless you have experienced it.

When I worked the gas station- the people who could afford the higher prices balked the loudest. The poorer drivers were less combative.
