Wow this thread sure tells ya who is who. I think you tell a lot about a person by the way they tip. I love how funny some of you are.

Tazzy, sorry, I owe you an apology, I dont know how I read that wrong, I glanced and got a vibe and assumed I was right. I can be so mean. Sorry.

I glanced over the rest of the many pages since I got home from work hahaha and see you are in the industry too. Cool on ya.

I like this thread because it shows in a microcosm the sorts of mentalities we deal with regarding tipping and the restaurant business.

So are you saying that elderly or disabled people on a fixed income don't deserve to go out once in a while and not have to eat their own cooking? Or what about that single mother that is struggling to make ends meet? Doesn't she deserve to get out once in a while as well?

This may be an unpopular answer, but I don't think anyone deserves to eat out. Some people can afford it and some people can't. If you can't afford to tip, don't eat at restaurants where a tip is expected. There are options for people who can't afford to tip and don't want to eat their own cooking: most grocery stores have prepared food, and some of it, like at Whole Foods, is restaurant-quality and **NO TIP REQUIRED**; there's also fast food.

I tried to search for the thread where we last talked about this, but couldn't find it.  California is just one state (there are others) where tips are NOT allowed to be counted in wages, and employers MUST pay federal or state minimum wage, whichever is higher.  Calif state minimum wage is $8.00 per hour.  So no waitstaff in California EVER makes less than $8 per hour before tips.  Also, the IRS has handy worksheets for keeping track of tips.  If your actual tips are less than your allocated tips, you are allowed to claim your ACTUAL tips, but you HAVE to keep records.  Many waitstaff don't keep the records, so they are credited with income they never received, and are therefore taxed on it.

If anyone can find that other thread, I think there was a link to the states that require minimum wage be paid without regard to tips.

Anyone with a heart isnt going to give a shit if a poor mom comes in, shares a meal with her kid and doesnt tip big time. I find though that poor moms find a way to also show props to the waitron.

If someone doesnt tip well it is not the end of the day. Someone else makes up for it. It is more a state of mind than where their money is at. Rich people with those heavy black amex cards can tip pretty bad and poor folks can tip well.

Old people, the mentally deranged, and whomever needs to have slack cut, no biggie. It is the conscious aware person who jips and acts cheap, is usually also high, high maintenance, and full of themselves they are the ones who shouldnt eat out I say.

I usually tip 25-30%. I'm pretty forgiving about most things (if the server's overwhelmed with customers I don't expect top-notch service; I've been there - and for everything else I usually assume they're having a bad day which happens to everyone now and then) but if the food is sub-par or the server just isn't trying, I will tip less.
I don't go out much because I'd rather splurge on one really nice evening than settle for two or three okay dinners - and if I can't afford to tip well, I don't go out. I agree with lucylucy on that.

PA is a big state.... tho I tend to doubt that your area has home cooked delights.

First of all, ALL restaurant kitchens have microwaves. It doesn't mean they are serving frozen crap, it means they have a microwave. This includes the most upscale restaurant you are going to go to.

Let's be real pahunkboy, it isn't the microwave that makes people sick or fat. The food in restaurants are cooked to be enjoyed. In other words, they use real butter, yummy cream sauces and all the other delicious stuff that should be eaten in moderation.

If you don't like the food in the restaurants, stay home and cook for yourself. If you can't afford to tip your server at least 18%, stay home and cook for yourself. If you are a cranky son of a bitch who is never happy, stay the hell home.

I used to have some regular customers who always commented about how happy and cheerful I was. I honestly explained to them the fact that my tips partially depended on my being that way. Since it was my job and I had to be there anyway, what was the point of spreading misery to others because I was in a bad mood?

I would suggest most people rent the movie "Waiting" with Ryan Reynolds and that MAC computer guy (forgot his name). As cheesy as the movie was, almost anyone who has been in the food service industry will laugh their asses off because so much of how the servers act is true.

Actually they don't. We are good friends with and currently are doing a gorgeous addition on Primo Restaurant in Rockland, and there wouldn't be a rmicrowave allowed in that kitchen at any point. Of course, she also grows her own produce, raises chickes, has her own greenhouse on site and is a James Beard award winner. Average dinner for 2 easily $250.00 not including tip. If you are ever here...it's an experience.

A simple question out of curious. How much do you tip a waitress and why do you tip her that amount? Also what would make you tip her more?

I don't eat out much, but when I do I always give the waitress a tip I think she deserves. If she is quick to come up and retrieves my meal warm, I will tip her more. If she is slow and bring my food cold, she's ain't getting nothing. So if you serve me- I want my meals hot damn it :D I guess that applies to my subs too lol :P

I would give bigger tips of the waitress if she would wear a top hat or cat ears ^^ Those make girls look cute and it's it's not allowed to wear but she wears is anyway, I would tip here even more lol :P

(I didn't write the specific number of money, because the currency and economy is different in Lithuania, and it would look like I'm giving shit to them even if they try hard XD)
[/quote]

typically, the tip rate is between 10-15%. but i will tip a good waitress/waiter more than that. since my chosen occupation is being a server/waiter. i have been tipped quite well by most people (unless they were drunk and angry in general or assholes to start with)

LAF,  I do stay home.

I would disagree about real butter and so forth.

In my local area - we have chains, and the food is pretty much TV dinner.  Is sure is not worth $18 a head.

People have no taste buds.    People also have no attention span and no reverence for life.

Even in Chicago- - some of the best food is the ethnic stands.... I love that.  But some there still over do salt/msg, and so forth.

If you cultivated ones taste buds all of this is apparent.

The food today- simply does not match the food of the 70s.

Frankly an $18 tv dinner is insulting.

I usually tip 20 percent, rounded up to the nearest dollar.

I've heard that it's preferable to get a tip in cash rather than on a credit card. Can any of the servers on this thread let me know if that's true? Thanks.

I bartended off and on for 17 years, and yes we definitely like cash tips better. For several reason really. One being that if it's on a card, we have to claim it on our sales, and in a few places I have worked, the credit card tips get put into your paychecks so you get taxed on them as well, and you have to wait to get them. Also, if a place pools tips, it's not uncommon to hold back some of your cash tips if you are working with slackers that aren't doing their share.

I always tip with cash.  I have even gone as far as to put $1 tip on a debit card, and hand the person (waitress, hairdresser whatever)  5 or 10 bucks cash.

Probably made the folks working the register call me a cheap asshole, but the person that mattered had the money in their pocket.

I do not see how if the food is sub-par it is the wait staff's fault in any way unless when you let her know and she didn't try to get it remedied by taking it back and/or getting the manager.

If I use my debit card but tip in cash, I just write "cash" on the tip line.
