Biggest sporting event in the world starts tomorrow (fuck the olympics), predictions/thoughts anyone?

Right now I'm mostly worried about Englands 1st match. More that our opponents won't turn up than about the result.

The other teams in our group are Algeria and Slovenia.
England has FIFA ranking 8, Elo ranking 4
USA has FIFA ranking 14, Elo ranking 20
Slovenia has FIFA ranking 25, Elo ranking 47
Algeria has FIFA ranking 30, Elo ranking 71

That guy has the strangest shaped head, is it just me or is his head slanted like a rhombus?

This explains a great deal. There was never meant to be an attack on Iraq; it was meant to be Australia.

You need to start supporting your team properly...Everyone always says the US is not into football...BUT more tickets to the world cup games have been sold to Americans than any other country outside of the host.

That might have something to do with USA having 4-150 times the population of european nations. :)

Nope 500 or so million for you... 300 million for us... face it you guys are cheapskates...but better football players. Better hope it doesn't get popular here or we will win all the time.

I wonder if the US will grow it's own brand of soccer hooligan as well.

More tickets were purchased in the usa than any other individual natio. Collectively, Europe is way ahead of any other continent :p

I'm looking forward to the start tomorrow...but as soon as the US gets it's butt beat I'm off to a St Louis Cardinal baseball game. Fair weather fan I'm afraid.

I've always wondered what gets into people to tip over cars and set them on fire when their team wins a sports championship or even just a particular game? Here in civilization... St Louis... we have parades speeches, and pats on the back.

It's not the sport itself, but the fan system....particularly in nations where teams are actually tied to their town, and success/failure could result in effects on the local economy with promotion/relegation.....taps very strongly into subconscious tribalism.

As for US getting beat tomorrow, you should stick around. You can probably go on to beat slovenia&algeria, which'll get you through to the last 16....probably to face Germany. Then you'll be near certainly out, but top 16 ain't bad.

first result in
S Africa 1 - Mexico 1

S Africa scored first, the first goal in the tournament theyre hosting. Neither team were very convincing for much of the match but it was notable that the only real signs of inspiration came from S Africa, ranked 40 FIFA places below Mexico, including a 90th minute chance to win that hit the post. Mexico had the most of the possession, but as they say "it aint what you got, its what you do with it", and on that basis S Africa were easily more likely to win, the draw resulting from a Mexican goal arising from a rare - as in it was the only one that stood out - defensive lapse by S Africa.

Uruguay v France at the moment - on paper France should win, but they only qualified as the result of a "hand of God" goal that slipped past the referee in  play off against Ireland. Come on Uruguay!

Also, IMO SA defense was pretty lapsey all the way through.

Turns out Butch that you have something like 6.5 times the population of England and have bought something like twice the number of tickets England have.

But....credit where it's due.....can't knock the Yanks for showing an interest. And you're right....you have the resources to plough into it....and if you ever did take it seriously you would be up there by virtue off being such a big country.

I am trying to watch the game right now, but I swear the background noise is driving me nuts!  Why does it sound like it is being played in a damn bee hive?

I am gonna have to change the channel soon, cause if I mute it and can not hear what the announcers are saying, I wont have a clue whats going on!

Ugh.
