GotSteel -> Why do people think it's ok to strawman an atheist? (6/17/2010 10:46:16 PM)

When an atheist explains his position around here there are a number of people who explain to said atheist that isn't in fact their position and presume to attribute a different position to said atheist. How do you people consider that to be remotely reasonable? It certainly wouldn't be for any other group. For instance it would be ridiculous for me to say to a Christian no, no, no that's not your position; you believe that:

*The earth is flat and sits immovable upon pillars. Isaiah 40:22 KJV, 1 Samuel 2:8 KJV, Psalm 93:1 KJV
*Unicorns are real. Job 39:9-12 KJV
*You need to murder everyone in town and their livestock if a single person in the town isn't Christian. Deuteronomy 13:13-19 KJV

How does doing this to an atheist make it any different?

I dunno why they wrong you, GS. However, you do have a closed mind as far as spirituality is concerned. There used to be two other such persons frequenting the forums, otherwise intelligent people whose posts I enjoyed to read - I have forgotten their nicks - but eventually I hided their posts from my view, much to my regret.

As for your assertions:
1. Of course the earth is flat and sits immovable upon pillars. [8D] Duh!
2. Them particular unicorns - there are other kinds of unicorns - are a mistranslation of a word referring to wild bovines.
3. That is not Christian, but Jewish. Christians do not follow the pagan god of the Jews, but Jesus and Saint Paul.

Meh.  I see some athiests do it to religious peeps and I see some religious peeps doing it to athiests.
I really don't see the big issue - y'all as bad as each other.[;)]

"Atheism" is not a religion.  And there is no official book of atheism like a Bible, Quran, etc.

After that, there is no position of atheism, either official or unofficial.

marie2 -> RE: Why do people think it's ok to strawman an atheist? (6/18/2010 4:47:49 AM)

Why do people think it's ok to strawman anything? It's an argument strategy. Why do people think it's ok to riddle their arguments with with sarcasm, insults and venom? It's all smoke and mirrors put into effect in an effort to "win" something that they perceive as a fight. Why? Because their over-inflated egos make it impossible for them to have a discussion of disagreement without playing games.

I'm with you, OP.
When I'm dissed, I remember that on average, people with religion tend to have lower IQ's, to have trouble reasoning and to obey paternalistic authority, to react irrationally, unpredictably, physically and violently, to be racist [giving preferential treatment to people of their own religion], to rape, and embezzle.
The bible says I should stone the person arguing with me because his socks are made out of more than one fibre [Leviticus 19:19]
, that I am allowed to enslave him because he's American [Leviticus 25:44-45], and that I should kill him if he enters a church because he has a flat nose [Leviticus 21:17-21].
I might tell him his god has damned him already for prostelyzing or praying in public [Matthew 6:1-6], for having a tattoo [Leviticus 19:28] and for shaving [Leviticus 19:27].
Then I say, 'No headline ever read, 'Atheist militia machetes, rapes agnostic village,' and I move on.

Of course, I've met some nice religious people, but I just don't understand the gaping holes in their logic centres; they can see the differences in the brains of religious people using PET scans: interesting.

There is no other way to denigrate the atheist which of course is the goal. An atheist doesn't even really exist except by interview whereas the religious have their dogma...demonstrated by their proselytizing.

Atheist do not preach...'join me to having your soul saved in atheism '

Jesus, would you get off the soapbox already?

Your self-righteous bullshit is getting annoying.

From the little I have seen of your posts you do the same thing.

It's just you are much cruder in your insults.

If you can't stand the heat then waddle into the kitchen, grab the quart of chocolate-marshmallow Haagen-Dazs, find your favorite Oprah dvd and you'll be feeling better in no time.

They're winning nothing, but for some it's not forgotten by next week.

From what I have seen the couple of times I've even spoken out on a poli or religion topic (which is about as frequent for me as a blue moon) I've noticed recently on two different threads, that many of the posters who frequent those topics will continue to hold grudges with those who are in a different camp, and you see the personal grudges getting dragged to each topic between the same people, weeks and months later.

For instance, let's say there's a new thread about religion and someone comes in to the topic with a response like "yeah you fucking bleeding heart libs are all the same". yada yada yada. And I'm looking at it, like where the heck did THAT come from, this is a topic about life after death, not politics.

So yes, it's forgotten by the readers when the threads stop, but the grudges are carried for some of the participants.

I've had my words with people too when I've allowed myself to be dragged into the mud. It happens. With the exception of about 2 or 3 posters who really stand out in my mind as nasty, I don't even remember most of the people that I've disagreed with in the past or what the topic even was.

Except for dummyguy of course, because he leaves such an impression. But he also wears mandals and fucks Jefff in the ass, and that's kind of hard to forget.

I've seen the data on IQ differences. I wonder if these atheists with the higher intelligence were born abd bred atheists. What about a religious person who abandoms their religious beliefs ? Do they get smarter, do their IQ points rise up ?
Conversely, if an atheist has an epiphony and at some point subscribes to a religion, do they get dumber ? Do they lose IQ points ? Same questions apply to the other traits that are assigned to atheists vs religious people.
Is the child or young person who has very devout religious beliefs doomed for life in the smarts department, even if they become atheists as adults ?
For the sake of diversity and fairness should we have different IQ testing for religious and atheist folks ? You know, like an affirmative action type thing for the religious crowd. Seems to me issuing the same test to the poor little Christian, Jewish and Muslim kids take is setting them up for a life of failure and inferiority. < sacasm >
There was a point in my life when I did not believe in God or religion. Was I smarter then ? Did returning to my religious views diminish my IQ points ?

I'd love to see this study. I have seen the one about IQ, as I said. And the funny thing is: the hypothesis was that people of less intelligence were more likey to be drawn into a religion. Very different from a hypothesis that sets out to prove atheists are more intelligent.
I's so glad you have  met * some * nice religious folks. Just rememebr to keep it simple for us, we have trouble following along with all you smart people.

I really wish I could be smart. < sighs >

Same reasons atheists think it's ok to strawman religious people - they strongly disagree on the topic. *shrugs* From the point of view of a religious person, I've never met people more intent on "converting" me than atheists. But, of course, that is simply personal experience.

Perhaps you are phrasing your stance in a way that is insulting to those who hold different views. Or maybe it's just that some people dicks. There are going to be dickish religious people just like there are dickish atheists.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Why do people think it's ok to strawman an atheist? (6/18/2010 8:10:22 AM)

You lose ten IQ points for every time you agree with rule or real0ne but you can gain them back if you make sure you get at least eight hours sleep.

What if you listen to Mozart while agreeing with them? I've always read that is supposed to give you a temporary IQ boost.

You understand the importance of the words "tend to" in the phrase "tend to have lower IQs," right?
