Apparently when americans first heard recordings of Tom Jones they thought he was American and black. Wasn't til they saw him they realised he was Welsh and orange.

Excellent.

I was thinking more Southport though I do not understand where the port became in that name, as the sea hardly comes in. Even the fishermen use converted tractors and WW2 DUKWs to fish from.

Well done, yes I am in Southport !

The “port” part makes little sense to me either. It was never a port, as Portsmouth is a port. The navy has never been here as far as I know.

“South” makes little sense either. Certainly, we are South of the Ribble, but we are also North of the Mersey !

It was formerly known as South Hawes. It was founded by a Duke who enjoyed the dunes here in the 150+ years ago. But there has always been something here. It is I suppose, the path between Liverpool and Preston.

Birkdale is quite old, and Churchtown older still. The latter having many thatched cottages.

The fishermen you mention are hunting for prawns. They are found in the shallow surf. The DUKWs are long gone, they use old tractors now.

The sea does come in ! That a fallacy that people like to believe. The beach is gently inclined, and so the sea goes out a long way, giving us a huge beach. The sea comes in as quickly as a man can walk in places.

Never walk the beach northwards of the pier. There is quicksand out there. A few years ago a man was a bus length from the pavement when he found himself up to the knees/thighs in the stuff. There should really be warning signs. But that might alarm holidaymakers I suppose. It’s a bit like the film jaws. The authorities don’t want to alert the holidaymakers to the sharks, and here, they say bugger all about the quicksand.

Sometimes we are treated to the sight of drunken fools setting out to walk to Blackpool. One day we will have a stiff on the beach.

You are perfectly safe South of the pier { I think}. I have never heard it said otherwise in my 30 years here.

According to Hollywood we are characterised as being either Jason Stathem or Hugh Grant.

These are the two basic types of British.

On the other hand Hollywood regards Scottish people as either being Billy Connolly or Ewen McGregor. It doesn't know what the Welsh are yet, as this strange sect hasn't made it that far afield.

Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones.. where have you been?

Or perhaps Welshport ? You are after all close to the lands of the Western Celts. Do you have red hair?

We got foxes and badgers around here, but they are no problem, perhaps it's the cats that keep them in check, six of them in my block alone, three in the next block and five in the one after that, this is cat territory. There is a birman upstairs, timid little thing, I can see the fox having that one at some point as the rest of the moggies here are bruisers, all teeth and claw which they practice regularly due to the size of the territory and 14 cats living in it.

In my area are also about 30 cats and that even despite living rather close to a very busy main road (seriously...never lived at a place with so many, though that being said, 4 of them are already mine anyway). However, I am not concerned about my boys regarding the fox, they have their fights and know to look after themselves but yes, birmans are quite timid and not really much street wise either and my other girl isn't much better, hence why both of them are always inside when I am not at home and at night time as they can only go outside when I am at home and when the door or window is open. The Birman I only got as my girl already was a scardy cat and so I felt she needed inside company...otherwise I wouldn't have gone for a pedigree cat. But yep, that was a pretty good scare for her and it took me some time to bribe her to come out again wherever she was hiding after kind of flying through my lounge due to her speed when she was chased from that buggar...and as birmans are usually far from bothered about running (as her breeder said before I got her, her birmans are basically so "active" that they go out of the house with 5ft distance, just to lie down by then) it said a lot to me when she came with such a speed (followed by that fox staring at me from the patio door...)

Foxes can be bloody nasty buggers. There was that story a couple of weeks back about one mauling somebody's kids, wasn't there?

Yeah.  Now we just have those damn killer foxes...

How ridiculous that hunting with the bow is outlawed. I have my trusty 40lb compound bow, and will happily creep stealthfully though that ladys garden until the horned moon goes down. I shall certainly take a fox pelt or two.

yep you do, that ugly fellow tried to eat my birman recently (never thought she can run that fast)

thats a birman...and that fox seems to be desperate for food

Now I understand. I thought you meant some bird or other.

My money would be on the fox, but it would cost him a little skin

Yeah, such variety, sand and er sand and yet more sand as far as the eye can see. Good for land yachting on though, that and racing cars. Here, it is whatever you want, rock pools, pebbly beaches, sandy beaches all within ten minutes drive.

I cant stand them. Next door's is a black tom. It sprays and defecates in my garden. It has ruined my nice out door lounger. Its foam is all over the place now that pussy has torn the material to shreads. In this heat I leave my outhouse door open, as I have young plants in there. For whatever reason, pussy has eaten both leaves of my F1 cucumber. It is only 2" tall.

I know it is someones pet, so go no further than splashing it when I can. But it is just sooo very tempting.

If it's eating leaves off your cucumber, perhaps painting them with something toxic might help.

I have been coping with my mounting anger by fashioning a figure of four trap. Now, I'm sure I really could'nt do it, the lovely lady next door would be most distressed. But I have also moved the necessary paving flags to a suitable place. It helps me cope. I am begining to wonder what I might do next to gain relief. A dry run perhaps ? I might just do that. I'll set it all up, but not bait the spike.......

Try putting some plastic bottles of water near to it, and make sure they're not full to the top. Apparently cats don't like the sound of the bottles when they constrict because of the change in temperatures. I hope it works for you. :)

It used to be Wales, the other side of the Severn - if you were an English outlaw and you made it over the river you were home free (except for being killed or enslaved by the Welsh of course). The bounty hunters of the day waited this side of the river at Bewdley (Stourport didnt exist) where there was a crossing - we still have "Catchem's End" in Bewdley where they'd be waiting.

Its long since been England now though - albeit the accent towards the border increasingly betrays the natives' pedigree.

As you can see I am a white cat with grey and white markings. Some of my nieces and nephews have red hair, but not me.
