Too much air play after Synchronicity was released burned me out on them.

I have to agree with Level
quote:

They're like anyone else, some are terrific people, some are jackasses.

I have had a few run ins on both sides , and in a couple of instances I as innocent and treated like I was guilty, and vise versa. It really comes down to the indivdual officer.

Police deserve no respect, and get none from me. Some are decent people, but when they are at work, they are cops, and deserve as much scorn as can be heaped on them. They have become our controllers, pawns of their masters, who think we're their slaves. Well, they have another thing coming.

Let me know how that goes for you.

I didn't know Mounties were assholes, in the states the mounties are all shown like squeeky clean nice guys and no I am not just talking about the Brendan Fraser Movie.

What did you get busted for?

Aneirin -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/26/2010 7:00:31 PM)

I have always had problems with those in a position of authority, the police in particular, as it is known those vested with authority are likely to abuse that position. Now I have met coppers with humility a service to society, but I have also met coppers who believe their authority gives the god like status, the latter I have problems with, as I understand these people are unaware, or uncaring of the position which they hold, they are therefore to me unworthy of their position, as they are not an asset to society but a hindrance.

But within the realms of that which we are interested in with this website, my experience tells me authority can win by the person desiring authority doing so in a fair and understanding manner. Raised voices do nothing for me, neither does curt words, what I seek is a nartural authority achieved by natural dominance, something many are sadly lacking, including members of police forces world wide. To them, their lack of natural dominance gives way to the autocratic I am situation which is detrimental to all and gives rise to a distrust and dislike of those that police us.

In the creation of a police force, we have created a representation of the law on a street level, we have become subject to the things law lords create in a reality we know. But what is the alternative given many in society are for whatever means antagonistic with others, the police are therefore a necessary evil, and an evil we should prefer rather than anarchy, which affects us all, not just or rarely those in power as it is on the street level that the antagonists usually operate away from so called Ivory towers.

It is just a pity some representatives of the law are in it for their own ego.

i have mixed feelings about the police. i think the majority that i've met have been professional, helpful, and generous. i have to give them props- i would not want their job. On the other hand, it's the assholes i tend to remember more.

i remember particularly resenting them in Davis. Davis is a small college town with virtually no crime, and yet there's a squadcar on every corner. i used to see the police stopping people for any reason at all. i got stopped once for walking down the street late at night. (Davis is a college town. Everybody walks around late at night.) The year i lived in a house, i saw them pull someone over every time i walked outside. i suspect they did it as a fundraising technique-- like, they had a quota of tickets that they had to give out, or something. Everybody i knew at the time had similar stories about getting some bullshit ticket. It made me angry- we were students and didn't have money to "support" the overflated police force in Davis.

i would say 90% of the police i've come into contact with are very professional. It's too bad that a small minority are giving the rest a bad name.

P.S.- i hate to say it, but i think girls get a break when it comes to the police. Since the force is mostly men, i think they are less likely to give a woman a ticket. On average. i know saying that is probably going to piss some people off. Sorry. Just calling it like i see it.

Tantriqu -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/26/2010 7:31:16 PM)

I love 'em [literally].
As has been said, yep, they're human, and to paraphrase Raymond Chandler, they go down mean streets so we don't have to.
"Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. The detective must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor . . . with rude wit, a lively sense of the grotesque, a disgust for sham, and a contempt for pettiness."

They see a lot of inhuman things that makes most of 'em more humane. Their job is stressful, dirty and dangerous. With Reagan closing mental hospitals, there are more crazies on the street, and the bad guys are heavily armed. And the next time you have to deal with police, remember: everyone pisses on them, literally and figuratively, their entire work day and off-duty, too, so try to empathise that their last call before yours was a dead baby or raped grandfather before you call the cops to get your neighbour to mow his lawn.
Boo hoo, your boss yelled at you at your work today. Did someone with AIDS spit blood in your mouth? Did someone tweaked on crystal meth shoot at you? Did you get between a husband and wife armed with baseball bats? Didn't think so. That's what they deal with EVERY SINGLE DAY.

So, tell them the whole truth and nothing but, and they'll be straight with you. But lie to 'em, even a small detail, and you're on your own, 'cos you've just joined the vast majority of the people they've already had to deal with today.

Cops: good people, thoughtful lovers, GREAT subs. So when someone says, 'Cops: fuck 'em!' I think, 'Oooooh, yes, please!'

[sm=agree.gif][sm=goodpost.gif]  Tantriqu....excellent post!

Police officers are humans that happen to be held to a higher standard.  They don't always reach that standard but the majority of the ones I know personally and professionally make every effort to try daily with each tour of duty to perform their job to the best of their abilities.  For that, they have my respect.

popeye1250 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/26/2010 11:05:52 PM)

I guess we're talking about "locals". I've had minimal contact with them. No speeding tickets nothing like that.
I think most of them are pretty good people who believe in what they're doing. I'd like to see them carrying the old wooden billy clubs again and useing them!

MissSepphora1 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/26/2010 11:55:18 PM)

after being pulled over for the most ridiculous things like one headlight, having the sticker in the wrong place on my license plate, and crossing the center line into a turn lane, i became aggravated with police officers.
when a cop pulled into a parking lot near me as i was waiting for the bus and said hey miss come over here, i became a little nervous
when a cop slowed down and followed me as i walked home from the bus stop, i became scared.
i believe this is a form of harassment. but who do i complain to?

MidwestFlyer6666 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 12:04:01 AM)

I feel like you do about those jerk offs they think because they have a badge that this makes them a god they are wrong. The people who join the police depts are the ones who got picked on,and beat up in school by the bullies,so now these individuals think since they joined the police that they think they can take their problems out on others that this makes them tuff no it just shows what losers the police really are. They are wimps without the gun on them. I have personally seen gang members beta the hell out of the police in the chicago projects.the gangs have run the police out of the projects in chicago. Screw yhe police.

MidwestFlyer6666 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 12:10:23 AM)

I feel ya ive been there to. Like i mentioned in my last post/reply,the police are a bunch of punks they couldn't fight their way out of a paperbag without help. The poeple who joined the police depts are the ones who got picked on in school by the bullies so now that they have a badge, and a gun they think they are tuff guys. I have seen the police get their asses whipped by gang members in chicago, and i have personally seen gang members chase the police out of the projects. The police aint s---. Screw the police. Keep fighting them eventually they will give up,if you keep fighting back against them. They figure that most people are weak, and will not fight back against them but if you fight back then they start to be like damn we better leave that person alone before we get our asses sued in court.

myotherself -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 12:17:09 AM)

I've had more contact than I would wish to have with my local police force here in the UK. As a victim of a couple of crimes in the past few years, I've had to deal with detectives and with patrol officers. I have to say, without exception, that I have been treated with a huge amount of respect and support.

I live in an area that is slowly being cleaned up, and the only people round here who have a bad word to say about our local force are the scumbags who are making life miserable for ordinary, decent folk. I actually watched the police raid a house a couple of streets away (they found a lot of drugs, apparently). The scum who was arrested was let out on bail, and has been spouting off about 'police abuse' - yet I witnessed him being led from his home in handcuffs, the police officers talking quietly and calmly to him, and putting him in a van. Once in the van, he kicked off big time and was shouting all sorts of abuse, kicking the sides of the van and behaving like the animal he is.

The only time I've EVER had an issue with a police officer was many years ago (about 15) when I was working in semi-rural New Jersey on a short-term contract. I didn't drive, so at about 11pm I was walking back to my hotel from a local bar. It was only a 15 minute walk, but I was stopped by a police officer in a car who asked a huge number of questions about why I was out walking so late at night, who I was with, who I'd been seeing, and so on. He refused point blank to believe that a woman might go to a bar/restaurant on her own, have a meal, chat to the barman, then choose to walk home on her own on a lovely late spring evening. He got even more annoyed when I refused his offer of a lift back to my hotel (which I could see from where I was standing). When he asked why I didn't want a lift, I pointed out that his patrol car smelled of burgers and fries and I was afraid I'd throw up on his upholstery...hehehe

Very true. I know some awesome cops, and have met a few that are not so awesome.

They do a job i would never want to do, and see things i have no desire to see.

good thing it turned out well. Can you imagine trying to handcuff a bunny?

MissSepphora1 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 6:03:11 AM)

to tie two threads together, perhaps the cops see a woman alone and hope to get "flirted with" or even "propositioned" to let the ticket go. i'm sorry, but i'd rather pay the ticket than "flirt" with a man who could use that type of position to attempt something like that. not saying they are, but it does make sense.

once i was pulled over driving a car that i'd bought from my aunt who lives out of state. before i had the chance to finish the registration process in west virginia i was pulled over by a cop because i didn't have an inspection sticker on the windshield.
well he followed me before he turned his lights on, so obviousy he saw the tag was out of state and didn't require an inspection sticker. he still pulled me over to tell me i didn't have an inspection sticker.
the first thing he said when i rolled down the window was, "good evening ladies."
i allmost laughed because my 17 year old son was in the front seat with me. he apparently thought he was pulling over two women for something beyond ridiculous.

LadyCimarron -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 6:09:40 AM)

Please don't go around telling people to fight the police. That may work whereever you live. Here if guy tries to do that, half the force will show up and beat the shit out him. Or in the interim they will just kill him. And will not serve one single day in prison for it.

And I am not telling you I think; I am telling you what I have seen happen right here.

And from experience with just having a friend cop stop by my house one night when I wasn't home, my daughter was definitely more traumatized by that since she's afraid of any authority figure,

that is sad. Do you know why? I would think that could mess with her throughout her whole life.
