Because if you do you think your kid will always be afraid of authority figures? Why do you feel that will happen?

MissSepphora1 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 6:28:49 AM)

because why would her cop friend drop by her house when he thought she wasn't home?
to me... that's just creepy.

Police deserve no respect, and get none from me. Some are decent people, but when they are at work, they are cops, and deserve as much scorn as can be heaped on them. They have become our controllers, pawns of their masters, who think we're their slaves. Well, they have another thing coming.

What did you get busted for?

Yea, I thought the same thing when I read the post. Personally I think cops are like any other job. You have good and bad mixed in.

She didn't say he stopped by when he thought she wasn't home. She said he stopped by when she wasn't home. And yes, my mom had friends come by when she wasn't home. I wasn't creeped out. I just suggested that next time they call first. Not a big deal.

okay, i reread you are right.

pahunkboy -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 6:59:00 AM)

I agree that the Police chief is urgent to the force.  He and the mayor.

I spoke to mine in length over planned surveillance cams for the city here.  I hope you are sitting down for this statement.   I am satisfied with the chiefs  response to my grilling.     I am rather surprised too just how "with it" he is.

blueeyedbbwsub -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 6:59:32 AM)

I have the greatest respect for the police force. They do a job that is thankless, dirty, disgusting and heart-wrenching at times. They don't ask to be recognized when they perform heroic acts, they just say it's their job. Yes it is, but not many people would be willing to do what they do and see on a daily basis. I'd say 99% of any police force are the good ones. It's the 1% that ruin in for the rest of them.

As for being bullies, pfffft. They have to pass quite extensive screening and background checks before they're accepted into training. Do some bad apples get by, of course. Is it the norm? Of course not.

I've had to deal with the police (not as a criminal) on quite a number of occasions. They've never been anything but helpful and polite. 2 months ago, I had to see them try to corral my landlady's b/f while he was going through a manic episode and off his meds, it took 5 of them and 2 emts to finally take him down. He fought them the entire time and kept yelling that he was being abused and beaten. Not a chance. I had a front row view of it going down, and they did what they had to do. He was violent and I can't blame them for taking him down the way they did.

It's a thankless job where they often get no recognition, are spat on, cursed at and vilified. Most handle it with dignity a lot of us wouldn't show. Good on them and may they continue to keep the peace.

after being pulled over for the most ridiculous things like one headlight, having the sticker in the wrong place on my license plate, and crossing the center line into a turn lane, i became aggravated with police officers.
when a cop pulled into a parking lot near me as i was waiting for the bus and said hey miss come over here, i became a little nervous
when a cop slowed down and followed me as i walked home from the bus stop, i became scared.
i believe this is a form of harassment. but who do i complain to?
Rather than complain, you could try making sure all lights on your vehicle are in working condition, put the sticker in the correct spot on your license plate and not cross the center lines when ya aint sposed to......

Radical I know, but......

AQuietSimpleMan -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 8:41:42 AM)

See this is the thing, I find most people who dislike police are people who have issues with Laws they don't understand.

Why are they stopping me for having a broken Tail Light or Head light? Because there is a Law that says having those things is a ticketable offence.

Why are they stopping to talk to me while I am walking why are they questioning me? Because they are trying to make sure everything is okay, that you are alright and have not been violated.

Sure there are Cops who are Douche Bags, there are cops who throw authority, but they are taught to do so. They are Trained to be the authority figure in any situtaion, it is how they are trained.

The funny thing is that if you remove the Badge from many of the stated opinions above and you find things like this happen all the time all over the place but none are treated as dispicably as those that involve police.

I will stop and offer a woman a drive late at night if she is walking, because I have been there and I would like if someone offered me a ride. Should they take a ride from me a Stranger? NO I could be some creepy Rapist, I still offer. A Police Officer, SHOULD be someone you trust, however sadly I know that not all of them are.

It is a sad reality, but it's the way it is. Then there are Police officers who do great things. Like find missing children, and no one complains when they throw their authority around on the man who was responsible, but sometimes evidence points to someone who did not do it and they have to treat them like they did, it is how you catch a criminal.

If you go to the Police Department in your town you can request (Sometimes there is a fee) a Detailed Crime Report for your area. It will how you what percentage of those crimes were eventually ones that led to investigation and arrests, remember each one of those arrests came from a Police officer, Being the authority figure, and doing something most of us don't have the guts to do.

I think most people would be wise to watch themselves around the police. They may be there helping you but they never stop detecting obscure criminal offenses. How can anyone have a reasonable conversation with someone who they think could be trying to catch them out?

You shouldn't really even be a witness or aid police in their enquires because you have everything to lose and not much to gain they say. Obviously we'd all be worse off if that occurred.

CalifChick -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 10:23:32 AM)

We have a good police force in my town.  They respond to every call, and they are usually there in under 5 minutes.  In the adjoining, bigger, town the response rate is closer to 5 days.

I teach my children that policemen are there to help.  They have seen that firsthand.

You're lucky.  The police are supposed to be there to help people.  I don't really trust them, though.  I don't like cops.  I've seen way too many videos where cops were beating people in handcuffs that were face down on the ground.  I've also seen this in person down in Deep Ellum.  Good god, the person is already cuffed and laying down on the ground face down and the cops are spraying the guys with pepper spray and kicking him.  Not right.  I don't care what the guy did, this is uncalled for behaviour.   Chances are, the guy was probably just drunk. Maybe he called one of them a name or something.

Actually many struggle and run the risk of hurting themselves or another officer while doing so, Pepperspray is often used to take the fight out of a person.

As for kicking that is NEVER okay, and where as I have seen video of what looks like Kicking even to me, I have had video of me taking down a Youth where it looked like I kicked him twice while on the ground where in reality most Take down methods require you to get your knees on them once they are on the ground, to Pin them. This can look like Kicking and more realistically Kneeing them in the back. But a Youth with a razorblade threatening to cut a teacher needs to be taken down quickly and with as little chance of them fighting back and cutting anyone including themselves as possible.

Trust me on the Pepperspray, NO ONE gets away clean when it is used. Using it on a suspect tends to equally get every officer who is around them, TRUST ME ON THIS. Pepperspray is not something anyone LIKES to have used.

ShadowSide -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 11:06:24 AM)

To me, they are no different than useless hired thugs and will be treated as such when coming to my home. The laws of survival know nothing about "authority" or the paperwork granting such. At least I can say that I no longer fear them like I once did, since now I can boast that I have what they have or can get it with ease, thus leveling the playing field.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 11:24:25 AM)

Even for a Gorean that's a bit too much of a romantic view of the world.

The laws of survival say nothing about the need to pay for food at supermarkets either but we all do because it's a mechanism of society.

You just have to accept society needs to give power over others to those it trusts more than you. This is society, it isn't perfect but it's how it works.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 11:28:24 AM)

I don't really see the logic in lumping entire groups of people under one umbrella of bias.  ANY groups of people.  Except maybe politicians.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 11:38:53 AM)

There is no logic to fun it's just fun.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 11:56:50 AM)

I can find a lot of logic in fun.  I could even reference different studies that show the positive medical benefits of fun and laughter.

I don't see how viewing an entire group of people with a single bias is fun, but maybe that's my own bias toward generalized bias [:D]

Aneirin -> RE: People who dislike the Police. (6/27/2010 12:07:39 PM)

When viewing  cops, it is the same with  them as it is with anything, it is always a minority of bad apples that taint the rest.

But seeing as we are going down the route of customer satisfaction, perhaps the chief cuntstable should ask for an appraisal of the orificer that dealt with a person for whatever reason, a case of how can we improve our service to you the customer and the community.

Now obviously those being nicked for something will take great pleasure in shitifying the plod, but that is to be expected, but what about the others the normal non criminal, surely they might be more constructive.

Now if such an appraisal went out by post and returned by post, the bad apples can be made visible to the chief, who can then decide if the plod concerned is in need of some people training or a new career.
