Off topic for a sec -

in Australia we have recently (this year) changed to a national based registration scheme for psychologists (it was previously state based) and there are databases to check a psychologists skills, interests, specialties and quals. Our training and accreditation process is fairly standard and a person cannot work as a psychologist without having completed the appropriate training and registration. A person can get around this though by calling themselves a counselor or therapist which has caught some people out.

Psychoanalysis is not used widely over here and as others have said, the majority of psychiatrists are there mainly to prescribe and monitor medication rather than provide talk therapy.

The medical board here has also in the last few years introduced further training for doctors in mental health so there are more general practitioners here now who have a good basic understanding of mental health issues and will do more than simply write a script for someone.

I do know of a few psychiatrists who are also excellent counselors however unfortunately they are in the minority.

There are groups here but finding them is nigh impossible as they seem to be hidden behind a bureaucracy that is unwilling to tell you about them. I'm waiting to have a mobile crisis team get in touch with me, they have access to a psychiatrist. If I can't get an appt with him/her fast enough my nurse practicioner has 2 she can refer me to at the hospital in the city.

I'm hoping the ACT group is all they claim to be, the CMHA worker I was assigned to had initially told me that after the 2nd appt with her she'd come visit and then it would be home visits from that time forward. I went for the 2nd appt, she told me everything seemed fine and there was no need for her to come see me. I later found out that they don't like having to drive out where I live because it's considered "too far" and they just don't feel like it. Well phooooey on them, and I want nothing to do with them any further.

A good reason to try to find them is usually once you do, you feel less alone. Also, they are the best way to effect change within your mental health care system. It isn't fast but 2 people, or 4, 8, 12 etc make a lot more noise than one person on their own and being involved will make you feel empowered. You can make a difference. It will take time but you matter and your story matters and deserves to be told.
You have been fighting this alone for a very long time. Knowing you aren't alone could make a big difference.

I know it'll make a big difference. And I know once I find the right people, they'll be fighting for me and no one else and I'll finally be able to relax and not feel so stressed anymore. That will be such a relief. And thanks Angelika for the words, they mean the world to me, I know you understand what I'm going through and it's nice to have people who can relate and know where I'm coming from. You are truly a sweetheart.

I'm on name brand Lexapro (since it doesn't come in generic) and generic Wellbutrin. The combo is a god send for me, I was on generic Celexa for a while, but found it wasn't as effective for me as the Lexapro. Good luck in finding the right combo for you!

Wellbutrin is an amazing drug, that did nothing but make me jittery. Super useful though! I was so disappointed in Cymbalta! At first it was incredible, but by the time I worked up to a proper dose the side effect of SERIOUS abdominal pain that lasted eight hours or so kicked in. Le sigh. I never feel "well", my baseline is that I feel crappy most of the time. Cymbalta totally changed that! Amazing difference. If the pain was half an hour or so...

There is a new SSNRI that works in a similar way to Cymbalta. It is now approved for pain and not depression but SSNRIs are SSNRIs. It might be worth discussing with your Dr. Perhaps you could bypass the abdominal pain.

Lady H,
I know this is a long shot but its worth a try. You can appeal to the insurance company with a letter from your doctor to get the name brand. Especially if there is chemical difference with extended release of the drug. Your doctor would need to write a letter explaining the difference between the generic and the brand name.

I was able to get a specific muscle relaxer approved via this method. The worst the insurance company can due is deny it. So I think it would be worth a shot.
